The issue of bullying in nursing, and particularly in nursing education has been examined in numerous contexts, both in Canada and elsewhere. In this paper, we reflect on the ongoing prevalence of bullying in nursing’s history, its impacts, and question why it has continued to be problematic in nursing and in nursing education. We argue that part of the issue is a reluctance to come to terms with bullying’s historical origins in nursing. While we note that discussions of the issue of bullying in nursing start to appear in the 1970s, and more dedicated discussions of bullying in nursing education …

While much progress has been achieved in advancing nursing informatics capacity in Canada, more work is needed to keep pace with the 21st century technological revolution. Nursing programs and educators are at the forefront of this change, and are key to ensuring successful integration of digital health and informatics in nursing education and practice.
In 2018, a mixed methods study was conducted including a survey of nursing school administrators and nurse educators, telephone interviews, and one focus group meeting. The purpose of this research was to understand the current state of digital health and informatics content integration in nursing …

In the early twentieth century, surveys were an innovative and neoteric methodology. Collected in-person or by mail, researchers could ascertain the thoughts and opinions of a small sample, which could then be applied to the general population. Almost one hundred years later, the use of surveys has become pervasive in society due to digital technological advancement. However, while the digital evolution has not only altered the possibilities of how, when, and where surveys may be administered, the threats to this methodology has also evolved. While issues related to previously known errors (i.e. sampling error, non-response error, etc.) remain and have …

Given the current trend toward online nursing education and the recent changes to teaching and learning modalities as a result of a global pandemic, developing a distance-learning pedagogy for students that seeks to explore the power of compassion in the digital world is both timely and necessary. Drawing on pedagogical strategies used in an online nursing course including asynchronous online discussions called Tea Cafés, the authors showcase how they advanced knowledge and understanding in relation to nursing leadership and professional formation. By underpinning the authors’ distance-learning pedagogy in caring science, students not only thrived, but created a strong sense of …

Quality Advancement in Nursing Education - Avancées en formation infirmière
Background: Baccalaureate nursing education consists of theoretical and practical training that prepares students for the role of competent nursing care providers. The practical application of knowledge and skills is vital in nursing curricula worldwide. Nursing programs have changed over the last few decades and have become increasingly dependent on part-time Clinical Instructors (CIs) to teach the clinical components of the curricula. However, CIs receive minimal instruction to prepare for this complex role. It has been acknowledged in Canada that there is limited research to inform CI specific competencies.
Purpose: The purpose of this research was to conduct an exploratory study …

Purpose: To share an evidence-based framework for reporting and analysing three types of medication incidents in an undergraduate nursing program. Incident types include errors, near misses and discovered errors.
Background: Medication errors are underreported. Published studies on errors by nursing students indicate that although errors occur during clinical placements, there is a lack of consensus on how the factors that contributed to the errors are reported and analyzed. This limits our understanding of the factors that impact safe medication administration and reduces our ability to apply this knowledge to education and practice.
Method: Quality improvement project.
Results: Our reporting framework …

Teaching in the health professions, including nursing, requires specialized educational strategies that meet the needs of the current generation of learners. Currently there is a shortage of experienced post-secondary educators in nursing, possibly exacerbated by inadequate Teaching Assistant (TA) professional development programs. Most literature describes TA professional development programs that involve undergraduate students employed as TAs, and few consider how programs can mentor graduate students to develop their instructional skills, contribute to courses, and enhance their careers. There are limited reports in the Canadian context. In this article we outline the rationale, development, and implementation of a Graduate Teaching Assistant …

This study explores the largely-unknown history of missionary nursing on British Columbia’s Northwest Coast between 1901 and 1925, built around the experience of nurse Doris Nichols. From 1903 until 1935 in the Haíɫzaqv (Heiltsuk) village of Wáglísla (Bella Bella) there existed a small but persistent school of nursing within a Methodist mission hospital. The hospital was built with the intention to bring spiritual and physical healing to local Indigenous people, however the medical missionaries served all in need along the central coast, and the nursing school sustained this mission. Nichols arrived at Bella Bella in 1921, where she began her …

Quality Advancement in Nursing Education - Avancées en formation infirmière

Abstract
The 100-year milestone of university nursing education at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in 2019 offers a pause for reflection and inquiry. History assists us to illuminate current issues and debates in light of past events. An examination of the legacy of Ethel Johns and others who held the vision of why nursing education should enter the university in 1919 sheds light on its historical significance, then and now. The first Director, Ethel Johns, referred to the establishment of the University of British Columbia Department of Nursing and the degree program it offered as “the experiment” (Johns, 1936). …

At his death in 1945, Sir James William Barrett, a medical doctor in the state of Victoria left a bequest to the University of Melbourne, his alma mater. Barrett’s entire professional life was conducted at the University. According to his will, Barrett had been so influenced by his experiences of American universities which offered education in nursing that he directed a sum of money to the University of Melbourne for the foundation and/or development of a School of Nursing.
The background to Barrett’s bequest is a complex episode in Australian nursing education history that has received little attention. In the …
“If I Am Ill May God Save Me From Being Nursed By The Ideal Nurse That Report Sets Up”: The Debate Over An International Standard In Nursing Education, 1917-1925., Jaime Lapeyre
Quality Advancement in Nursing Education - Avancées en formation infirmière
Contemporary struggles in nursing education, including debates on jurisdiction over program approval, competency-based education, and curricula, are not new conversations amongst nurse leaders. Discussions on these very topics, spanning international borders, occurred between 1917-1925, as American nurse leaders looked to extend their influence over nursing education throughout the world. Elisabeth Crowell, an American nurse who was stationed in France with the Rockefeller Foundation’s (RF) Commission for the Prevention of Tuberculosis in France (CPTF) worked towards improving nursing education in areas of France in 1917, however, similar changes to nursing education made by American nurse leaders working in the US at …

“You Had To Just Kind Of Rub Her Cheek”: Memories And Emotions Of Mental Deficiency Nurses In Alberta, Canada, 1945 - 1975, Geertje Boschma
Quality Advancement in Nursing Education - Avancées en formation infirmière
Mental deficiency nursing evolved as a distinct, yet little known field of nursing education and practice in several countries during the twentieth century. In Canada it became a separate area of nursing in only one of its provinces, Alberta, and it was tied to one large institution, called the Provincial Training School for the care of developmentally disabled children and, eventually, also adults. This paper contributes to the history of mental deficiency nursing, currently called intellectual disability nursing, an existing specialty actively practiced in the UK and Ireland for example. Alberta’s program was established in 1933 and continued until 1973. …

The McMaster School of Nursing (SON) was approaching its 70th anniversary prompting a time of reflection on its contributions to nursing education. Were there lessons learned from the past that could provide a compass to navigate current day challenges and orient future strategies in the continued pursuit of excellence in nursing education? While the history of nursing education in Canada has been previously documented, there has been limited research into the evolution of different educational approaches. We decided to conduct in-depth historical analysis of the conditions that fostered educational scholarship and practice at our SON from 1946 to 2016. …

The health science professions- nursing, occupational therapy, physical therapy, audiology and speech-language pathology -address diversity and inclusivity within their professional organizations and educational experiences. Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) courses serve as the gateway into these professions. Diversity and inclusion is a larger higher education issue in the USA, as these programs are housed in colleges and universities. This paper explores diversity and inclusivity in these professions today and uses a historical case study from nursing to understand the impact history has had on this issue over time. The case study reflects nursing’s struggle to develop educational and professional …

In this article, the authors offer that the 2017 publication of Dr Sonya Grypma’s article entitled Historically informed nursing the untapped potential of nursing education was the catalyst for discussion of how historical content is addressed in nursing curricula and how it should be further enhanced. It offers perspectives on approaches used in undergraduate education to incorporate history in nursing curricula. Additionally, it suggests envisioning historically informed nursing through a relational lens. It will be of interest to readers as the area of pedagogy of historically informed nursing in the global environment of today is an urgent discussion in particular …

The experiences of undergraduate nursing students facing and overcoming failure in their coursework must be understood in order for nurse educators to effectively engage and provide supportive strategies to their students. A student-centred learning perspective and interpretive phenomenological approach to research frames this study of ten students’ accounts of their experiences from failure to success in a second year nursing course. Central themes include: Feeling Uncomfortable, Finding Confidence, and Cultivating a New Identity. Seeking feedback and building study habits and central to the students' pursuit of confidence and new identity formation. Implications for nurse educators’ proactive engagement with …

In Canada, formal inclusion of interprofessional education (IPE) curricula within undergraduate nursing programs has occurred since 2012. While there is evidence that Canadian university nursing programs are working to achieve the integration of IPE throughout undergraduate curricula, a gap exists in what is known about IPE integration within Northern Ontario nursing programs, particularly from the perspectives of faculty members and program administrators. This multiple case study explored how four undergraduate university nursing programs in Northern Ontario have integrated IPE into their curricula, including the opportunities and challenges of this work. Data collection occurred at each site between June 2016 and …

Globalization has resulted in the increased internationalization of higher education with most universities hosting international students and sending domestic students on international learning experiences. As part of this trend, many undergraduate nursing programs offer study abroad clinical placements to promote cultural sensitivity and global citizenship. While there is an abundance of research evaluating student perceptions of specific international study abroad experiences soon upon their return, there is little research exploring longer-term perspectives of participants across a range of diverse international placement sites. To provide guidance for their study abroad program, a nursing school in western Canada gathered the perspectives of …

Stakeholder engagement remains a critical endeavour in nursing curriculum development and renewal. Engaging stakeholders such as patients and families, students, and frontline clinicians in the development process is necessary to ensure that curricula meet the current needs of patients and are responsive to a changing healthcare environment. To inform strategies for effective stakeholder engagement a literature review was conducted to identify: 1) common roles and functions of stakeholders across nursing curricular projects, and 2) factors that promote positive stakeholder engagement in nursing curriculum development or renewal. Twelve papers were included in this review. Texts were analyzed using qualitative thematic analysis. …
