General and systemic racial inequalities, including slavery, mass incarceration, and health disparities, have existed throughout the history of the United States. Recent public health issues, specifically the COVID-19 pandemic, have shed light on enduring health disparities, including the disproportionate impact on black communities and other racial minorities. Cancer is a formidable, genetic disease that affects many people, either directly or indirectly. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide (31). Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a type of breast cancer that has a higher lethality compared to other breast cancers and has a poor prognosis due to its highly invasive nature and limited treatment options. Finding safe, effective, and accessible treatment for TNBC is integral to treating TNBC patients. Somites are important mesoderm structures that form in regularly timed intervals from the anterior end of the paraxial mesoderm at the end of gastrulation during embryogenesis. Cells of the ventromedial portion of the somite, the sclerotome, undergo epithelial to mesenchymal transition, surround the notochord, and give rise to connective tissues of the axial skeleton including the vertebrae, tendons, and ligaments. We are interested in understanding how the sclerotome is compartmentalized into the region that makes tendons. Genes expressed in the sclerotome, twist1 and twist2, are likely involved in the downstream differentiation of sclerotome to tendon progenitors. Previous studies have shown …

Human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) are cells derived from 5-day human embryos and are self-renewing cell lines that change into any type of cell in the body, a trait called pluripotency. hESCs have almost unlimited clinical and medical research potential. Selinexor is currently being used in several clinical trials for cancer and has shown anti-cancer effects in combination with other chemotherapies. Clinical trials evaluating the use of selinexor in the treatment of triple negative breast cancer are limited, but in vitro studies show promising results in its ability to kill triple negative breast cancer cells. The mechanism by which this occurs, however, is not understood. The goal of this research was to determine the mechanism by which selinexor kills BT- 549 triple negative breast cancer cells.

Effect Of Amodiaquine On Gene Expression And Apoptosis In Colorectal Cancer Cells, Holly Pyles

This study used gene expression analysis to explore the specific response to amodiaquine in HCT116 colorectal cancer cells. Real-time PCR revealed that 20 human stress and toxicity genes were upregulated by at least 3 fold in HCT116 colorectal cancer cells treated with AMQ. Of these 20 upregulated genes, 9 were found to be pro-apoptotic and 2 were DNA damage repair genes, which supports our original hypothesis that amodiaquine is inducing a stress response in these cells. These results are consistent with previous research done by Qiao et al. (2013), as DNA damage repair genes were among the genes upregulated in …

This study assesses language barriers from the perspective of nurse-patient relationships, focusing on the Hispanic patient population in the Nashville, Tennessee area.
