Migratory Material: Epigenetics & Weaving At The Us-Mexico Border, Valerie Navarrete
Migratory Material: Epigenetics & Weaving At The Us-Mexico Border, Valerie Navarrete
Masters Theses
Discourse often sutures the body shut, disallowing representations of identity to outgrow sociopolitical interests. This issue may originate from borders, but also from the unnamable pathology that generational colonial trauma transmits to the mind, body, and environment. Without a direct form of translatability, this thesis proposes a new materialism that deviates from any object-oriented ontology. Untethered and intra-active, epigenetics and weaving represent objects that transform typical ways of knowing and seeing. Their sensitivity to the environment, in addition to their mobility across generations of time, broaden the spatiotemporal loci of the body and its embodiment. Proposing new materials that expand …

Artificial Intelligence In The Medical Field: Medical Review Sentiment Analysis, Nicholas Podlesak
Artificial Intelligence In The Medical Field: Medical Review Sentiment Analysis, Nicholas Podlesak
Honors Capstones
In this research project, natural language processing techniques’ ability to accurately classify medical text was measured to reinforce the relevance of artificial intelligence in the medical field. Sentiment analyses (analyses to determine whether the text was positive or negative) were performed on the prescription drug reviews in an open-source dataset using four different models: lexical, a neural network, a support vector machine, and a logistic regression model. Each model’s effectiveness was gauged by its ability to correctly classify unlabeled drug reviews (i.e., a percentage representing accuracy). The machine learning models were able to accurately classify the text, while the lexical …

The Disparities Of The Marginalized: Focusing Race And Queerness In Science And Medicine, Kearby Stiles
The Disparities Of The Marginalized: Focusing Race And Queerness In Science And Medicine, Kearby Stiles
Honors College Theses
The United States is an immensely diverse country in which certain groups have been—and continue to be—marginalized in society because of their differences. Science and healthcare are areas in which marginalized peoples are negatively affected by a society that punishes difference and diversity. This is an immense problem because in biological and medical school education, in clinical research, and medical practices, little attention is given to marginalized populations. In this paper, I focus on the disadvantages faced by people of color, trans, and intersex people. I decided to focus on race because the history and current state of racism in …

Core to the goal of scientific exploration is the opportunity to guide future decision-making. Yet, elected officials often miss opportunities to use science in their policymaking. This work reports on an experiment with the US Congress-evaluating the effects of a randomized, dual-population (i.e., researchers and congressional offices) outreach model for supporting legislative use of research evidence regarding child and family policy issues. In this experiment, we found that congressional offices randomized to the intervention reported greater value of research for understanding issues than the control group following implementation. More research use was also observed in legislation introduced by the intervention …

Medical Writing Practices: An Inquiry Into Writing Standards And Career Development Opportunities In Healthcare Communication, Carly Miller
Summer Scholarship, Creative Arts and Research Projects (SCARP)
The medical writing field is a growing industry with robust opportunities for writing students. Being a niche yet important area of science, medical writing is often overlooked as an area of study at the undergraduate level. In order to provide this opportunity for interested students, as well as diversify the course curriculum at Elizabethtown College, a study was conducted into the medical writing field. The focus of this project is to research the local medical writing industry, along with graduate programs in the field, to better determine how an undergraduate 200-level medical writing course could be incorporated at Elizabethtown College. …

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
What does education mean to individuals in the world today? Education is a way one can attain or improve his or her ability to lead and survive in the society of ours. Without educational training of the mind, it may be impossible to realize the importance of adaptability of living in the environment. Without education, It may also be difficult to embellish the use of both the mental and physical attributes possessed by individual beings.
What really is education? Education is the training of the mind to perform desire functions or to perpetuate the modality of obtaining an end or …

Evolution Of A Multi-Layered World Of Science To Benefit Children With Hearing Loss, Ellen Rhoades, Rachel Glade
Evolution Of A Multi-Layered World Of Science To Benefit Children With Hearing Loss, Ellen Rhoades, Rachel Glade
Journal of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention
This is a brief but broad narrative and non-systematic review of developments that led up to how 21st century digital technology and translational research influenced, in particular, cognitive psychology and our improved understanding of mental resources among children with hearing loss. In turn, systemic multi-disciplinary research findings gave birth to Auditory Cognitive Neuroscience (ACN). Three broad constructs unique to ACN, i.e., auditory attention, effortful listening, and auditory fatigue, are then described in relation to children with hearing loss. This review concludes with a brief examination of future opportunities for researchers and clinicians who can ensure that children with hearing …

The field of nutrition has been investing in the development of many nutrition-specific and -sensitive policies and programs aimed at improving population-level malnutrition in all its forms. When there is a need to learn about a new system, programmatic context, or target population to understand how to effectively deploy an intervention to help improve nutrition, it is important to be able to ask a broad range of questions, both in topic and in scope. Our aim is to provide a simple and conceptually clear definition and principles to elaborate the science of implementation for nutrition to distinguish it from other …

Summer Scholarship, Creative Arts and Research Projects (SCARP)
A continuing project based on research in the summer of 2019, this SCARP project focused on two areas. The first was on updating the website created in the summer of 2019, including adding artwork, updating information, and including more resources for students. Due to college safety policies related to COVID-19, on-campus cataloging, digitizing, and uploading of new artwork was not feasible. However, that did not hinder editing the website in other ways. The website now includes more information on body systems, additional resources for college students, and other professional aesthetic updates.
The second focus of the SCARP project was on …

Stem Opportunities - High School 2019, Huey-Xian Kelly Wong, Madeleine Rauhauser, Annie Morgan Nelson
Honors Expanded Learning Clubs
This publication details the lesson plan for the “Opportunities in STEM” club for the summer of 2019. This club began out of a desire to educate high school students about the opportunities and careers available in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields. Often, students feel that the prospect of entering a STEM field is daunting and out of their grasp. What it means to be a scientist is often unclear, and students never consider opportunities out of the fear of the unknown, particularly when science is associated with complexity and difficulty. This lesson plan integrates experiments with a wealth …
