Expression Of Cd55 And Cd35 On Red Blood Cells Of Children With Beta-Thalassemia Major, Amira M. F. Shehata, Esraa G. R. Awad, Mahmoud A. El-Hawy, Rawhia H. El-Edel

Menoufia Medical Journal

Background Beta-thalassemia is a hereditary disease that is characterized by ineffective erythropoiesis and shortened red blood cell survival. In severe cases, blood transfusion is a mainstay therapy; however, regular blood transfusions result in iron overload with serious complications. Complement-mediated erythrocyte destruction is one of the pathological causes of hemolysis in beta-thalassemia. Membrane-bound complement regulatory proteins such as CD55 and CD35 ensure that the complement system does not become overactivated, thus causing harm to self-tissues. Objectives To assess the expression of CD55 and CD35 on erythrocytes of β-thalassemia patients and its correlation with hemoglobin (Hb) levels and other markers of hemolysis. …

Supply, Demand, And Quality: A Three-Pronged Approach To Blood Product Management In Developing Countries, Kyle L. Gress, Karina Charipova, Ivan Urits, Omar Viswanath, Alan D. Kaye

Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews

While transfusion of blood and blood products is instinctively linked to the provision of emergent care, blood and blood products are also routinely used for the treatment of subacute and chronic conditions. Despite the efforts of the World Health Organization and others, developing countries are faced with a three-part problem when it comes to access to and delivery of transfusions: insufficient supply, excessive demand, and inadequate quality of available supply. Developing countries rely heavily on replacement and remunerated donors rather than voluntary nonremunerated donors due to concerns regarding donation- and transfusion-transmitted infection as well as local and cultural beliefs. While …

OBJECTIVES: Pyruvate kinase (PK) deficiency is caused by PKLR gene mutations, leading to defective red blood cell glycolysis and hemolytic anemia. Rates of comorbidities and complications by transfusion history and relative to the general population remain poorly quantified.

METHODS: Data for patients aged ≥ 18 years with two confirmed PKLR mutations were obtained from the PK deficiency Natural History Study (NCT02053480). Frequencies of select conditions were compared with an age- and sex-matched cohort from a general insured US population without PK deficiency.

RESULTS: Compared with the matched population (n = 1220), patients with PK deficiency (n = 122) had significantly …

Complications In Cardiac Surgery, Christine Williamitis Jan 2021

Complications In Cardiac Surgery, Christine Williamitis

Theses and Dissertations--Nursing

Quality of care and outcomes from cardiac surgery have always been of primary importance to providers and the entire health care team when caring for cardiac surgical patients. Providers in cardiac surgery have had a long history of tracking procedural morbidity and mortality rates in programs nationally and internationally. Morbidity and mortality rates vary widely among hospitals. In most studies in which procedural outcomes from cardiac surgery are evaluated, the focus has been on operative morbidity and mortality and the probability of death after a cardiac surgical procedure. Less attention has been paid to predictors of perioperative complications, and sample …

Establishment Of Laboratory Methods To Assess The Application Of Blood Transfusions In Reptiles, Anke Cordula Stoehr Apr 2020

Establishment Of Laboratory Methods To Assess The Application Of Blood Transfusions In Reptiles, Anke Cordula Stoehr

LSU Master's Theses

A broad knowledge base on veterinary transfusion medicine has been developed in common mammalian species, but little is known in reptiles. The goals of this thesis were to establish laboratory methods to assess the application of blood transfusions in reptiles. Morphological and physiological differences in reptiles, including their erythrocytes, hamper direct adaption of mammalian laboratory methods.

Quantification of percentage hemolysis is a crucial tool for quality assessment of stored red blood cell products. We evaluated measurement of the required analytes for this calculation (supernatant and total hemoglobin) with different methods in blood from American alligators and found that the use …

BACKGROUND: Delay in receiving treatment for uncomplicated malaria (UM) is often reported to increase the risk of developing severe malaria (SM), but access to treatment remains low in most high-burden areas. Understanding the contribution of treatment delay on progression to severe disease is critical to determine how quickly patients need to receive treatment and to quantify the impact of widely implemented treatment interventions, such as 'test-and-treat' policies administered by community health workers (CHWs). We conducted a pooled individual-participant meta-analysis to estimate the association between treatment delay and presenting with SM.

METHODS AND FINDINGS: A search using Ovid MEDLINE and Embase …

Increased Risk Of Blood Transfusion In Patients With Diabetes Mellitus Sustaining Non-Major Burn Injury, Linda Mai, Katrina Spilsbury, Dale W. Edgar, Aaron Berghuber, Fiona M. Wood

Health Sciences Papers and Journal Articles

Background: Due to the increased mortality and morbidity associated with blood transfusion, identifying modifiable predictors of transfusion are vital to prevent or minimise blood use. We hypothesised that burn patients with diabetes mellitus were more likely to be prescribed a transfusion. These patients tend to have increased age, number of comorbidities, infection risk and need for surgery which are all factors reported previously to be associated with blood use.

Objective: To determine whether patients with diabetes mellitus who have sustained a burn ≤20% total body surface area (TBSA) are at higher risk of receiving red blood cell transfusion compared to …

Anticipated And Unanticipated Complications Of Severe Dengue In A Primigravida, Madiha Hashmi, Ghulam Zainab, Farah Khan Nov 2015

Anticipated And Unanticipated Complications Of Severe Dengue In A Primigravida, Madiha Hashmi, Ghulam Zainab, Farah Khan

Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology

As the incidence of dengue is rising among adults more cases of dengue fever are being reported during pregnancy. Physiological changes of pregnancy mask the pathognomonic features of severe dengue such as increased hematocrit, thrombocytopenia, and leukopenia and a high index of suspicion are required in endemic areas. Massive hemorrhage may complicate operative deliveries in unsuspected patients. World Health Organization recommends that all patients with severe dengue should be admitted to a hospital with access to intensive care facilities and blood transfusion. We present the successful management of hemorrhage and unanticipated complications of severe dengue in a young primigravida admitted …

Variability In Splanchnic Tissue Oxygenation During Preterm Red Blood Cell Transfusion Given For Symptomatic Anaemia May Reveal A Potential Mechanism Of Transfusion-Related Acute Gut Injury, Sean M. Bailey, Karen D. Hendricks-Muñoz, Pradeep V. Mally Jan 2015

Variability In Splanchnic Tissue Oxygenation During Preterm Red Blood Cell Transfusion Given For Symptomatic Anaemia May Reveal A Potential Mechanism Of Transfusion-Related Acute Gut Injury, Sean M. Bailey, Karen D. Hendricks-Muñoz, Pradeep V. Mally

Pediatrics Publications

Background

There is increasing evidence indicating an association between red blood cell (RBC) transfusions and necrotising enterocolitis (NEC) in preterm infants, especially late-onset NEC. This phenomenon is referred to as transfusion-related acute gut injury (TRAGI). One theory as to a pathophysiological mechanism is that transfusion may result in an ischemia-reperfusion injury to intestinal tissue. We tested the hypothesis that there is significantly greater variability during transfusion in splanchnic tissue oxygen saturation (SrSO2) than in cerebral tissue oxygen saturation (CrSO2).

Materials and methods

This was a prospective, observational study using near-infrared spectroscopy to monitor SrSO2 and CrSO2in preterm neonates undergoing RBC …

Hiv Prevalence In Blood Donors And Recipients In Pakistan: A Meta-Analysis And Analysis Of Blood-Bank Data, Bushra Moiz, Barkat Ali, Muhammad Hasnain Chatha, Ahmed Raheem, Hasan Abbas Zaheer

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Background:
The first instances of HIV-antibody detection in donated blood in Pakistan were reported in 1988. Since then, documentation of HIV in blood donors and of rates of transmission via transfusion has been limited. Previously assumed to have a low prevalence, HIV is an increasing health concern in Pakistan. Since there is no national, centralized blood-banking system, there are no reliable data on which to base estimated risks of transfusion-associated HIV infection. This study was therefore conducted to estimate the prevalence of HIV in blood donors and recipients in Pakistan between 1988 and 2012.
Methods:
Meta-analyses were undertaken of reported …
