Virtual communities of practice (VCoPs) facilitate distance learning and mentorship by engaging members around shared knowledge and experiences related to a central interest. The American College of Emergency Physicians and Emergency Medicine Residents’ Association's Global Emergency Medicine Student Leadership Program (GEM‐SLP) provides a valuable model for building a VCoP for GEM and other niche areas of interest. This VCoP facilitates opportunities for experts and mentees affiliated with these national organizations to convene regularly despite barriers attributed to physical distance. The GEM‐SLP VCoP is built around multiple forms of mentorship, monthly mentee‐driven didactics, academic projects, and continued engagement of program graduates …

The Tight Rope Walk Of A Medical Student, Bhargavi Madhu
The Tight Rope Walk Of A Medical Student, Bhargavi Madhu
be Still
When I think of Balance, I thought of my life as a medical student. It is similar to a tight rope walk where we are walking the line of medical school, aspiring to become physicians while trying to balance school, a family life, hobbies and eventual work life. It is important to find the right balance in order to not face burn out, something that is seen all too often amongst medical professionals.
Restoring Balance, Daniel R. Villanueva Toby
Restoring Balance, Daniel R. Villanueva Toby
be Still
As a medical student who has received half of their education during the COVID-19 pandemic, I wanted to portray the internal struggle of medical providers in trying to care for the sick and disabled. A great deal is expected of doctors in this day and age. That stress of expectations versus the innate desire to help others led me to write this poem.
The Asymmetrical Balance Of Medicine, Tabitha Xia-Zhu
The Asymmetrical Balance Of Medicine, Tabitha Xia-Zhu
be Still
The Asymmetrical Balance of Medicine is a visual representation of my life as a medical student. Asymmetrical balance in art is defined as a design that has different visuals on each side, but each side holds equal visual weight (e.g. The Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh).
Although the journey to practicing medicine is a long-term commitment that requires many sacrifices, making time for my loved ones and hobbies has kept me grounded both in and out of school. This balance will continue to be important as a physician. I believe that a capable physician can integrate their academic knowledge …

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine
The future delivery of high quality, patient-centered breast care is fundamentally dependent on how we train the next generation of breast care providers. As medical educators, we have a tremendous opportunity to transform how clinical skills related to breast care are taught and assessed and thereby, improve breast patient outcomes. This article reviews the current state of education and ideas for implementing a learner-specific, competency-based curriculum to teach breast care skills.
Coping With Medical School: An Interpretive Phenomenological Study, Sebastian C K Shaw, John L. Anderson
Coping With Medical School: An Interpretive Phenomenological Study, Sebastian C K Shaw, John L. Anderson
The Qualitative Report
Anecdotal evidence suggested that hopelessness and helplessness (HH) were often reported by undergraduate medical students. It is known that medical students are more susceptible to high levels of stress and depression than other student groups. There is currently concern about suicide rates in students and high drop-out rates in junior doctors. But what can be said of HH within this population? This study was aimed at eliciting medical students’ experiences of HH. An interpretive phenomenological approach was adopted. Participants were recruited from a single medical school. Loosely structured, audio-recorded interviews were carried out. Recordings were then transcribed verbatim, then underwent …

Addressing Mental Health In The Medical School Setting Using A Peer Forum, Erica Stagliano, Christina Bascara, Bliss Rogers, Ruth Conboy, Denah Appelt
Research Day
Background: Medical students have a particularly higher incidence of depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation compared to the general population. Consequently, there is a need to address students’ mental health as a component of professional development. At a medical school in the northeastern United States, we utilize a student-led, medical student-only forum that focuses on mental health topics and experiences. The intent is to educate and advocate for mental health acceptance and treatment through open discussion among peers. It is anticipated that this forum results in professional help-seeking behaviors and continued mental health discussions both inside and outside of the school …

Do You K Now D.O.?: Pre Medical Students’ Knowledge Of Osteopathic Medicine And Its Relation To Burnout, Philip Collins, Laura Collins, Gianna Bowler Darrow, Jennifer C Sepede
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
It is estimated that in the near future there will be a shortage of physicians available to keep up with the needs of a growing older population. To try to account for this, medical schools are expanding class sizes and new schools are being created. While both allopathic and osteopathic schools are expanding, osteopathic schools are doing so a much faster rate. Unfortunately, it seems many students enter their undergraduate careers unaware of osteopathic medicine despite having an interest in medical school. Undergraduate student interest in becoming a medical doctor continues to rise, but so too does the difficulty of …

Hands, Marc Perlman
Hands, Marc Perlman
HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine
“Hands” is inspired by my first encounter with a donor in the cadaver lab during my first year of medical school. This poem highlights the intimate relationship between the medical student and their “first patient” and captures the factors that helped me realize the grandeur of the dissecting experience. Through an awareness of the donor’s hands, I became viscerally aware that the cadaver is a real human being who donated their corporeality to help students learn. The bilateral vulnerability of this experience is a critical milestone in the development of health care providers. Given the recent transition from in-person to …
A Closer Look Into Empathy Among Medical Students: The Career Eulogy As A Lens, William Crump, R. Steve Fricker, Craig Ziegler
A Closer Look Into Empathy Among Medical Students: The Career Eulogy As A Lens, William Crump, R. Steve Fricker, Craig Ziegler
Marshall Journal of Medicine
Introduction
Empathy is widely considered to be key to being an effective physician. The measurement of empathy is important to those designing medical education. The majority of the literature on empathy is based on survey scales that ask the learner to express their degree of agreement with a series of statements. We have previously studied and published an entirely projective measure that we term a career eulogy.
Methods
We had 65 students based at a regional rural medical school campus complete measures of a career eulogy (CE) and the Jefferson Scale of Empathy (JSE) over their four years in medical …
Physician Shadowing: An Essential Practice In Fostering The Doctors Of Tomorrow, Anna M. Martens, Jo Linder, Janell Lewis
Physician Shadowing: An Essential Practice In Fostering The Doctors Of Tomorrow, Anna M. Martens, Jo Linder, Janell Lewis
Journal of Maine Medical Center
Problem Statement: Maine Medical Center (MMC) lacks a robust shadowing program, and there is inequity in shadowing opportunities for students from underrepresented minorities and economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Physician shadowing is essential for college students interested in going to medical school as it helps students make career decisions and strengthens their medical school applications. As we continue to expand our undergraduate programs in medical education and seek to grow our physician workforce, we need to provide students with equal opportunities to observe careers in medicine in order to foster interest and passion for the health field.
Background: A robust body of …

The Impact Of Healthcare Professional Students' Racial, Hiv-Related, And Abortion-Related Biases On Recommendations For Prenatal Care, Alison J. Patev
Theses and Dissertations
Black women and HIV-positive women have increased maternal mortality rates and other negative pregnancy outcomes, in part due to disparate prenatal care. Although women who seek abortions do not have the same negative outcomes, abortion stigma exists and is normalized in healthcare. Limited work has examined prenatal care provision for women in these groups, and even less work has explored the prenatal care provision by healthcare trainees (i.e., medical, nurse practitioner, and physician assistant students). Examining the role of bias on the prioritization of prenatal care items by healthcare trainees is imperative. Healthcare education sets the stage for future practice, …
