Surgical Education And Training In The Us: A Collaborative Effort To Deliver The Next Generation Of Surgeons., Hope T. Jackson, Khashayar Vaziri, Barbara Lee Bass

Health Sciences Education Research

The foundational principles of surgical training in the USA are based on didactic education, structured skill training, and experiential learning in surgical patient care with the supervision of surgical faculty. A consortium of professional organizations, academic institutions, and teaching hospitals with surgical faculty provide the structural framework, policies, and curriculum to train and evaluate surgeons capable of independent practice. This manuscript describes the roles of the organizations responsible for surgical training in the USA and highlights areas in evolution in the modern surgical education landscape.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: The goals of this study were to determine the current and projected supply in 2030 of contributors to emergency care, including emergency residency-trained and board-certified physicians, other physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants. In addition, this study was designed to determine the current and projected demand for residency-trained, board-certified emergency physicians.

METHODS: To forecast future workforce supply and demand, sources of existing data were used, assumptions based on past and potential future trends were determined, and a sensitivity analysis was conducted to determine how the final forecast would be subject to variance in the baseline inputs and assumptions. …

Nutrition, A Tenet Of Lifestyle Medicine But Not Medicine?, Leigh A. Frame Jun 2021

Nutrition, A Tenet Of Lifestyle Medicine But Not Medicine?, Leigh A. Frame

Clinical Research and Leadership Faculty Publications

Nutrition is a foundation of health and one of six pillars of Lifestyle Medicine. The importance of nutrition in clinical care is now widely recognized by health care professionals and the public. However, clinicians are not comfortable counselling their patients on nutrition due to inadequate or lack of training, leaving a significant need in patient care. This gap can be closed with evidence-based curricula in medical schools and in the trainings of other health care professionals. This communication presents the current state of nutrition knowledge in health care, emphasizing nutrition education for physicians, and presents a model of how pre- …

The Enhanced Brief Structured Observation Model: Efficiently Assess Trainee Competence And Provide Feedback., Scott Baumgartner, Dewesh Agrawal, Larrie Greenberg May 2021

The Enhanced Brief Structured Observation Model: Efficiently Assess Trainee Competence And Provide Feedback., Scott Baumgartner, Dewesh Agrawal, Larrie Greenberg

Health Sciences Education Research

Introduction: The regular observation of trainees is essential to ascertain trainee proficiency in competency-based assessments. Unfortunately, observation of residents is not frequent enough to facilitate entrustment decisions, and the busy clinician-educator may not have the tools or time to conduct effective and efficient observations.

Methods: We created a hands-on faculty development workshop utilizing an enhanced variation of the brief structured observation (BSO) technique to train both primary care and subspecialty pediatric faculty on how to effectively and efficiently observe trainees. The workshop has provided faculty a practical approach to observing trainees in a focused fashion and providing effective feedback on …

Assessing How A Tobacco-Free Campus Leads To Attitude Change And Support Among Students, Faculty, And Staff., Trevin E. Glasgow, Carrie A Miller, D Jeremy Barsell, Elizabeth K. Do, Bernard F Fuemmeler Jan 2021

Assessing How A Tobacco-Free Campus Leads To Attitude Change And Support Among Students, Faculty, And Staff., Trevin E. Glasgow, Carrie A Miller, D Jeremy Barsell, Elizabeth K. Do, Bernard F Fuemmeler

Health Sciences Education Research

INTRODUCTION: Universities are increasingly considering tobacco-free campus policies to help promote a healthy learning and working environment. We assessed attitudes of students, faculty, and staff, before and after the implementation of a tobacco-free campus policy at a large, urban university. We also examined individual factors associated with these attitudes.

METHODS: An independent panel design method was used to assess students, faculty and staff about their tobacco product use, attitudes towards tobacco policies, and support for cigarette and e-cigarette bans 3 months before and 7 months after a university-wide policy change to ban tobacco and e-cigarettes on campus. Survey participants before …

Community Health Center Residency Training: Improving Staffing, Service, And Quality, Candice Chen, Nicholas Chong, Qian Luo, Jeongyoung Park Jan 2021

Community Health Center Residency Training: Improving Staffing, Service, And Quality, Candice Chen, Nicholas Chong, Qian Luo, Jeongyoung Park

Health Sciences Education Research

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Community-based residency programs are an important strategy to address rural and underserved primary care shortages, however, health centers report both benefits and challenges to training. This study aims to understand the impact of new Teaching Health Center (THC) residency programs on health center staffing, patient service, quality of care, and provider productivity.

METHODS: Using the Uniform Data System, we used inverse propensity score weighting to create a balanced sample of new THC and non-THC health centers in 2010. Using 2018 data, we applied propensity score weighted regressions to examine changes in staffing, service, quality of care, and …
