Red Ear Syndrome: A Case Presentation And Discussion, Jared Brackenrich, Samantha Sternad, Chad Johnston
HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine
Introduction: Red Ear Syndrome (RES) is a condition often considered to be a localized form of erythromelalgia. It can be related to structural cervical defects or idiopathic. RES is generally very difficult to treat.
Discussion: A 57-year-old male presented to the dermatology clinic complaining of a 4-month history of intermittent redness and severe burning of bilateral ears. On examination, the patient exhibited edematous erythema and tenderness to palpation affecting the right and left ear and right malar cheek. A skin biopsy revealed mild superficial perivascular lymphocytic infiltrate with hypertrophy of endothelial cells. The patient was found to have a normal …

High risk women without a history of preeclampsia were less likely to be recommended aspirin for preeclampsia prevention. A simple screening tool at 1st trimester ultrasound can significantly improve aspirin utilization for preeclampsia prevention
Low Dose Aspirin Use For Primary Cardiovascular Prevention Among Lebanese Population, Walid Maassarani, A. El Mallah, Thuraya Domyati
Low Dose Aspirin Use For Primary Cardiovascular Prevention Among Lebanese Population, Walid Maassarani, A. El Mallah, Thuraya Domyati
BAU Journal - Health and Wellbeing
In spite of the controversies regarding low-dose aspirin safety and efficacy, aspirin is widely used by individuals for the primary prevention of myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke. This study assess the appropriateness of low dose aspirin use in a sample of Lebanese population. A cross sectional study was conducted using a community based questionnaire to assess each patient’s risk factors for Myocardial Infarction and ischemic stroke and possible contraindications for aspirin use. WHO risk score was used to calculate the cardiovascular risk of patients and determine the appropriateness of aspirin use for the primary prevention of cardiovascular diseases accordingly. Data …
Is There A Mortality Benefit With The Use Of Aspirin In The Primary Prevention Setting In Adults Without Cardiovascular Disease?, Lauren Bernardi
Is There A Mortality Benefit With The Use Of Aspirin In The Primary Prevention Setting In Adults Without Cardiovascular Disease?, Lauren Bernardi
PCOM Physician Assistant Studies Student Scholarship
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this selective EBM review is to determine whether or not there is a mortality benefit with the use of aspirin in the primary prevention setting in adults without cardiovascular disease.
STUDY DESIGN: This is a systematic review of three double blind randomized controlled trials published in 2018. All three trials compared 100 mg of aspirin with placebo and were published in English.
DATA SOURCES: All three articles were identified and published through peer-reviewed sources using PubMed.
OUTCOMES MEASURED: Mortality was the outcome measured through various death identification steps such as review of death certificates, notification from …

Cytokines mediate and control immune and inflammatory responses. Complex interactions exist among cytokines, inflammation, and the innate and adaptive immune responses in maintaining homeostasis, health, and well-being. On-demand, local delivery of anti-inflammatory drugs to target tissues provides an approach for more effective drug dosing while reducing the adverse effects of systemic drug delivery. This work demonstrates a proof-of-concept theranostic approach for inflammation based on analyte-kissing induced signaling, whereby a drug (in this report, aspirin) can be released upon the detection of a target level of a proinflammatory cytokine (i.e., interferon-γ (IFN-γ)) in real time. The structure-switching aptamer-based biosensor described here …
Review Of Anticoagulation Therapy In Unprovoked Pulmonary Embolism, Christopher D. Klucas
Review Of Anticoagulation Therapy In Unprovoked Pulmonary Embolism, Christopher D. Klucas
Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters
The purpose of this research was to identify the best course of action in response to a diagnosis of unprovoked pulmonary embolism.
•The evidence demonstrates non-inferiority status of new direct oral anticoagulants (DOAC) when indirectly compared to conventional warfarin therapy.
•Aspirin was also found effective in mitigating the risk of recurrence, but to a lesser extent than both DOAC agents and warfarin.
•DOACs are reasonable alternatives to conventional therapy. Attention to individual comorbidities may allow providers to find advantage with one therapy over another.
• The research, thus far, has not been able to identify a universally safe and an …
Falls And Traumatic Brain Injury In The Elderly On Aspirin Or Anticoagulant Therapy, Jonathan Bassig, David Nauheim, Stanton Miller, Patricia Williams, Tingting Zhan
Falls And Traumatic Brain Injury In The Elderly On Aspirin Or Anticoagulant Therapy, Jonathan Bassig, David Nauheim, Stanton Miller, Patricia Williams, Tingting Zhan
Phase 1
Introduction: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) after a fall in individuals aged 65 and older is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality, but the effect of aspirin and anticoagulant therapy on TBI severity is not fully understood. This study evaluated whether the severity of TBI is associated with use of aspirin or anticoagulant therapy or in combination.
Methods: Using retrospective chart review, we identified patients age 65 or older who fell and sustained head trauma that were admitted to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital trauma service from 2017-2018. Based on final diagnosis, patients were classified into three groups of TBI …

Department of Neurosurgery Faculty Papers
Study Design: Broad narrative review.
Objective: To review and summarize the current literature on guidelines, outcomes, techniques and indications surrounding multiple modalities of minimizing blood loss in spine surgery.
Methods: A thorough review of peer-reviewed literature was performed on the guidelines, outcomes, techniques, and indications for multiple modalities of minimizing blood loss in spine surgery.
Results: There is a large body of literature that provides a consensus on guidelines regarding the appropriate timing of discontinuation of anticoagulation, aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and herbal supplements prior to surgery. Additionally, there is a more heterogenous discussion the utility of preoperative autologous …
