Interaction Between Angiotensin Ii And Bdnf In Modulating Sympathetic Nerve Activity, Bryan K. Becker Dec 2015

Interaction Between Angiotensin Ii And Bdnf In Modulating Sympathetic Nerve Activity, Bryan K. Becker

Theses & Dissertations

Over activation of the sympathetic nervous system is prevalent in many forms of cardiovascular disease such as chronic heart failure (CHF) and hypertension. Although increased neuronal renin-angiotensin system activity in presympathetic neurons has been well implicated in mediating this sympatho-excitation, many of the neuronal effects of angiotensin II (Ang II) signaling remain poorly understood. One particular mechanism of Ang II-mediated increases in presympathetic neuronal activity is through reductions in voltage-gated K+ currents. Another pathway that has profound effects on neuronal K+ currents and that has been previously implicated in Ang II-signaling is brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) activity through …

Hypertension Patient Compliance, Taylor Myers Dec 2015

Hypertension Patient Compliance, Taylor Myers

University Honors Program

Hypertension is a prevalent condition in the United States that often has many comorbidities. It is usually asymptomatic, so patients are less likely to comply with treatment if they feel healthy. This is a growing concern due to the complications that can arise from hypertension. Hypertension can be associated with a lower quality of life in patients that have symptoms. However, in patients that do not show symptoms they may feel that they have a higher quality of life by not changing their preexisting habits. The reasons for patient noncompliance will be studied as well as interventions to increase compliance, …

Dashing Away Hypertension: Evaluating The Efficacy Of The Dietary Approaches To Stop Hypertension Diet In Controlling High Blood Pressure, Preeya Shah Phd, Kyle D. Maxwell, Joseph I. Shapiro Md

Biochemistry and Microbiology

The dietary approaches to stop hypertension (DASH) diet has been developed and popularized as a non-pharmaceutical intervention for high blood pressure reduction since 1995. However, to date, a comprehensive description of the biochemical rationale behind the diet’s principal guidelines has yet to be compiled. With rising interest for healthy and reliable life-style modifications to combat cardiovascular disease, this review aims to compile the most recent and relevant studies on this topic and make an informed assessment as to the efficacy of and underlying mechanisms operant in the DASH diet. Specifically, the merits of lowering dietary intake of sodium and saturated …

Role Of Redox-Sensitive Calcium/Calmodulin-Dependent Protein Kinase Lla In Angiotensin Ii Intra-Neuronal Signaling And Angiotensin Ll-Mediated Hypertension, Urmi Basu Aug 2015

Role Of Redox-Sensitive Calcium/Calmodulin-Dependent Protein Kinase Lla In Angiotensin Ii Intra-Neuronal Signaling And Angiotensin Ll-Mediated Hypertension, Urmi Basu

Theses & Dissertations

Activation of renin-angiotensin system and elevated levels of circulating and brain angiotensin II (AngII) has been implicated in the pathogenesis of neuro-cardiovascular diseases, such as hypertension and heart failure. In central neurons AngII increases generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which in turn regulates neuronal ion channels. Previous studies have demonstrated that ion channels can also be regulated by protein kinases, such as calcium /calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII) as a downstream mediator of AngII signaling. In the heart, CaMKIIδ undergoes oxidation upon AngII stimulation and increased pro-oxidant conditions. However, the exact mechanism by which AngII and ROS regulate CaMKIIα, …

Cardiotonic steroids (such as ouabain) signaling through Na/K-ATPase regulate sodium reabsorption in the renal proximal tubule. We report here that reactive oxygen species are required to initiate ouabain-stimulated Na/K-ATPase·c-Src signaling. Pretreatment with the antioxidant N-acetyl-L-cysteine prevented ouabain-stimulated Na/K-ATPase·c-Src signaling, protein carbonylation, redistribution of Na/K-ATPase and sodium/proton exchanger isoform 3, and inhibition of active transepithelial 22Na+ transport. Disruption of the Na/K-ATPase·c-Src signaling complex attenuated ouabain-stimulated protein carbonylation. Ouabain-stimulated protein carbonylation is reversed after removal of ouabain, and this reversibility is largely independent of de novo protein synthesis and degradation by either the lysosome or the proteasome pathways. Furthermore, ouabain stimulated direct …

The Role Of G Protein-Coupled Estrogen Receptor In Vascular Function And Hypertension, Natalie C. Fredette May 2015

The Role Of G Protein-Coupled Estrogen Receptor In Vascular Function And Hypertension, Natalie C. Fredette

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Regulation of arterial tone relies heavily on molecular crosstalk between endothelial and smooth muscle cells. Although it has been demonstrated that estrogen (E2) exerts protective effects against cardiovascular disease (CVD), the exact mechanisms and balance of E2 signaling in endothelial and smooth muscle cells remain unresolved. Here we characterize the G protein-coupled estrogen receptor (GPER) in the vasculature by elucidating its pathway in endothelial nitric oxide (NO) production and vascular smooth muscle maintenance of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by NADPH oxidases (NOX). NO is thought of as a vasoprotective entity, while the overproduction of ROS by NOX can lead to …

Hypertension is a prevalent health concern in today’s society, especially among individuals of low-income economic status. An increased risk for heart disease has long been correlated to hypertension, and this risk increases further as the population ages. Patient education is crucial for prevention and management of diseases such as hypertension; therefore it is necessary to develop effective education tools. This is particularly true among high-risk groups such as low-income populations. This study compared the efficacy of printed educational materials versus orally presented educational materials in terms of improving patient knowledge regarding hypertension. Subjects were randomly assigned to either the printed …
