Disability, a long-standing problem affecting mankind, is associated with medical, social welfare, political, and human rights problems and, therefore, is complex. The World Health Organization (WHO) promulgated the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) in 2001, facilitating the study of disability in recent years. According to the WHO Disability Report, the worldwide prevalence of disability is 15%, and the minimal worldwide prevalence is estimated to be 1 billion cases. Before 2012, disability evaluation was based mainly on the medical model in Taiwan, and, therefore, the prevalence was lower than 5%, which is much lower than the international level. …

There are approximately 1200 new cases of traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) each year in Taiwan. Traumatic SCI often results from motor vehicle crashes, acts of violence or sports injuries. These are potentially leading patients to suffer from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The characteristic symptoms of PTSD include persistent re-experiencing of the event, increased arousal and avoidance of stimuli associated with the trauma and numbing of general responsiveness. The symptoms must cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational or other important areas of functioning. Large scale toxicological testing programmes which are currently ongoing such as the new European chemical legislation REACH require the development of new integrated testing strategies rather than applying traditional testing schemes to thousands of chemicals. The current practice of requiring in vivo testing for every possible adverse effect endanger the success of these programmes due (i) to limited testing facilities and sufficient capacity of scientific/technical knowledge for reproductive toxicity; (ii) an unacceptable number of laboratory animals involved (iii) an intolerable number of chemicals classified as false positive.

A longitudinal study was carried out to determine the prevalence of Campylobacter spp. and Salmonella spp. in two laying duckling flocks from the same parent stock. In total, 477 samples: breeding ducks (n=100), 1-day-old female ducklings (n=160), 30-day-old female ducklings (n=178), and environmental (n=39) samples isolated from incubator, soil, water, and feed, were investigated. Results revealed that an overall isolation of Campylobacter spp. was 27.0% (129/477). From the total of 129 positive samples, 56.6% was C. jejuni and 43.4% was C. coli. Objective The aim of the study was to evaluate the prevalence of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBLs) in Enterobacteriaceae among patients conducted at Menoufia University Hospitals. Background Resistance to β-lactam antibiotics is an increasing problem, and β-lactamase production is the most common mechanism of drug resistance, especially in Enterobacteriaceae. The Clinical and Laboratory Standard Institute (CLSI) interpretive guidelines stated that Enterobacteriaceae that produce ESBLs are resistant to therapy with penicillin, cephalosporins, and aztreonam, despite apparent in-vitro susceptibility to some of these agents. Background: As many as 70% of veterans with chronic pain treated within the US Veterans Administration (VA) system may have posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and conversely, up to 80% of those with PTSD may have pain. Previous reports have found that university students in Africa comprise a sexually active population, although the prevalence of HIV or sexually transmitted infections (STI) has not been measured. We conducted a cross-sectional survey of students from five large universities in Kampala, Uganda, using respondent-driven sampling. Background: Racial differences in carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) have been suggested to be associated with the disproportionally high prevalence of cardiovascular disease in black adults. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of cardiovascular risk factors on the racial differences seen in cIMT in obese children.

Methods: Obese subjects aged 4 to 21 years were recruited prospectively. Few studies have investigated cracks involving the pulp chamber walls or floor. The purpose of this study was to create a classification system for intrapulpal cracks and analyze associated clinical characteristics. Retrospective analysis included 52 teeth confirmed to have an intrapulpal crack. The classification system describes the crack based upon its location within the pulpal walls and floor. Documentation consisted of demographic, subjective and objective examination data. Chi-squared analysis tested associations with the intrapulpal crack classifications. We use data from rural Nepal and South India to compare the prevalence of small-for-gestational-age (SGA) and neonatal mortality risk associated with SGA using different birth-weight-for-gestation reference populations.

Methods

We identified 46 reference populations in low-, middle-, and high-income countries, of which 26 met the inclusion criteria of being commonly cited and having numeric 10th percentile cut points published. Those reference populations were then applied to populations from two community-based studies to determine SGA prevalence and its relative risk of neonatal mortality.

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is estimated to play an etiologic role in 40-50% of penile cancers worldwide. Estimates of HPV prevalence in U.S. penile cancer cases are limited.

METHODS: HPV DNA was evaluated in tumor tissue from 79 invasive penile cancer patients diagnosed in 1998-2005 within the catchment areas of seven U.S. cancer registries. HPV was genotyped using PCR-based Linear Array and INNO-LiPA assays and compared by demographic, clinical, and pathologic characteristics and survival. Histological classification was also obtained by independent pathology review.

BACKGROUND: Although funding has supported the scale up of routine, opt-out HIV testing in the US, variance in implementation mechanisms and barriers in high-burden jurisdictions remains unknown.

METHODS: We conducted a survey of health care organizations in Washington, DC and Houston/Harris County to determine number of HIV tests completed in 2011, policy and practices associated with HIV testing, funding mechanisms, and reported barriers to testing in each jurisdiction and to compare results between jurisdictions.

BACKGROUND: Determining the variation of circulating cathodic antigen (CCA) in urine and egg counts variation in stool between days in Schistosoma mansoni (S. mansoni) infected individuals is vital to decide whether or not to rely on a single-sample test for diagnosis of Schistosomiasis. OBJECTIVE: To assess the knowledge of Abaye Deneba community members regarding intestinal parasites and prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections.

METHODS: Knowledge about intestinal parasites was assessed by administering a questionnaire to 345 randomly selected household heads. Parasitological stool examination of 491 randomly selected individuals was done using the formol ether concentration technique.

RESULTS: Knowledge of the Abaye Deneba community about parasitic diseases such as schistosomiasis, amoebiasis, ascariasis and taeniasis was very low. To determine the frequency of migraine in the eastern part of Turkey and its sociodemographic characteristics, impact on disability, and clinical aspects. Materials and methods: The study was conducted door-to-door in the eastern part of Turkey. Those who suffered from headaches were diagnosed with migraine as per the 2004 diagnosis criteria of the International Headache Society and its frequency was determined. Demographic data and Migraine Disability Assessment Scale (MIDAS) scores were recorded. Although traditionally considered as a symptom of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), some authors have proposed that pathological hoarding could be considered as a stand alone condition. The prevalence of pathological hoarding behaviour has been shown to be high in some countries, but little is known about the prevalence and correlates of hoarding in the non-clinical population in Italy.
