The Use Of Remote Monitoring For Internal Cardioverter Defibrillators (Icds): The Infusion Of Information Technology And Medicine, Susan Shirato, Msn, Rn, Ccrn

College of Nursing Faculty Papers & Presentations

The clinical use of automated implantable cardioverter defibrillators (AICDs) has been rapidly increasing since the results of several randomized trials confirmed the efficacy of AICDs in the secondary and primary prevention of sudden cardiac death. Patients with AICDs require high-quality care and intense follow-up to ensure safe and effective device performance. According to international guidelines these patients should be followed at 1- to 4 month intervals, depending on the device model and the patient’s clinical status (Schoenfeld, 2004). Given the expanding indications for use and the complexity of these devices, there is an urgent need to develop new means of …

Bridging The Care Continuum: Patient Information Needs For Specialist Referrals., Carol L. Ireson, Svetla Slavova, Carol L. Steltenkamp, F. Douglas Scutchfield

Preventive Medicine and Environmental Health Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Information transfer is critical in the primary care to specialist referral process and has been examined extensively in the US and other countries, yet there has been little attention to the patient's perspective of the information transfer process. This cross-sectional study examined the quality of the information received by patients with a chronic condition from the referring and specialist physician in the specialist referral process and the relationship of the quality of information received to trust in the physicians.

METHODS: Structured telephone interviews were conducted with a random sample of 250 patients who had experienced a referral to a …

Preparation And Using Phantom Lesions To Practice Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsies, Vinod B. Shidham, George M. Varsegi, Krista D’Amore, Anjani Shidham Sep 2009

Preparation And Using Phantom Lesions To Practice Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsies, Vinod B. Shidham, George M. Varsegi, Krista D’Amore, Anjani Shidham

Department of Pathology

Currently, health workers including residents and fellows do not have a suitable phantom model to practice the fine- needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) procedure. In the past, we standardized a model consisting of latex glove containing fresh cattle liver for practicing FNAB. However, this model is difficult to organize and prepare on short notice, with the procurement of fresh cattle liver being the most challenging aspect. Handling of liver with contamination-related problems is also a significant draw back. In addition, the glove material leaks after a few needle passes, with resulting mess.

We have established a novel simple method of embedding …

Genetic Enhancements And Expectations, Kelly Sorensen Jul 2009

Genetic Enhancements And Expectations, Kelly Sorensen

Philosophy and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

Some argue that genetic enhancements and environmental enhancements are not importantly different: environmental enhancements such as private schools and chess lessons are simply the old-school way to have a designer baby. I argue that there is an important distinction between the two practices—a distinction that makes state restrictions on genetic enhancements more justifiable than state restrictions on environmental enhancements. The difference is that parents have no settled expectations about genetic enhancements.

How Close Is The Bench To The Bedside? Metabolic Profiling In Cancer Research, Que N. Van, Timothy D. Veenstra Jan 2009

How Close Is The Bench To The Bedside? Metabolic Profiling In Cancer Research, Que N. Van, Timothy D. Veenstra

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Metabolic profiling using mass spectrometry (MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) is integral to the rapidly expanding field of metabolomics, which is making progress in toxicology, plant science and various diseases, including cancer. In the area of oncology and metabolic phenotyping, researchers have probed the known changes in malignant cellular pathways using new experimental techniques to gain more insights, and others are exploiting these same cellular pathways for therapeutic drug targets and for novel cancer biomarkers, with the ultimate goal of translation to the clinic. Here, we discuss the challenges and opportunities in metabolic phenotyping for discovering novel cancer …

Benefit Design Of Medicare Drug Plans: An Analysis Of Ohio And The National Landscape From 2006 Through 2009, Brad Haverkos Jan 2009

Benefit Design Of Medicare Drug Plans: An Analysis Of Ohio And The National Landscape From 2006 Through 2009, Brad Haverkos

Master of Public Health Program Student Publications

Objectives: Since previous research was fragmented and incomplete, I described changes in the benefit designs of stand-alone PDPs in the United States from 2006 through 2009. In addition, I identified trends in the PDP market of Ohio and compared them to the national data. The intent was to discover changes that might only be observed during the examination of a smaller market. I then presented the enrollment data of stand-alone PDPs in Ohio and discussed the benefit designs of popular plans to help further understand the PDP market dynamics.

Methods: Each year, CMS collected and released information on benefit characteristics …
