All Clear: A Workbook For Sexually Active Accutane Users Who Can Become Pregnant, Taylor Petersen

Honors Projects

Accutane is a pill-based derivative of Vitamin A used to treat cystic acne. The process to start and continue the medication each month is tedious and full of potential for error. This is especially true for female patients who are able to become pregnant as they have the additional step of monitoring and updating their birth control through an online portal. Patients are treated like numbers and there is little to no customization within Accutane treatment from patient to patient. To make this worse, reliable information about the drug is scarce and many turn to social media platforms or other …

An Updated Look At Mental Health Services In American Public And Private Prisons, Lieren E. Tyira Dec 2022

An Updated Look At Mental Health Services In American Public And Private Prisons, Lieren E. Tyira

Student Theses

People residing in American prisons have the legal right to mental health care while incarcerated (Justia, 2021). This is important, as the prevalence of mental disorders is high in this population (Prins, 2014), and incarceration is a psychologically damaging experience, which hinders a person’s success at rehabilitation. Numerous of issues related to the mental health services (MHSs) in both public and private prison facilities have been reported in recent years, which warrants systematic exploration. The little existing research comparing the presence of MHSs in these facilities has produced mixed results, it uses out-of-date datasets, and none has explored MHSs in …

Ethical Oversight Of Roles & Relationships In Treatment & Research In Advanced Disease States, Alexa Vercelli Aug 2022

Ethical Oversight Of Roles & Relationships In Treatment & Research In Advanced Disease States, Alexa Vercelli

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There is often ethical analysis focusing solely on the care of the patient by the physician or on the protection of the research participant by the clinical investigator, but those two are often overlapping. By paralleling the analysis of treatment and research, it emphasizes the specific ethical approaches necessary for individuals facing advanced diseases states in the separate roles of being a patient or participant. It also gives guidance to the complexity of the ethics surrounding medical professionals who float between the roles of treating physicians and clinical investigators. As individuals with advanced disease states are considered a vulnerable population …

Optimizing Antiretroviral Therapy With Modern Rifapentine Containing Tb Treatment, Anthony T. Podany

Theses & Dissertations

In the past decade there has been a multitude of phase 3 clinical trials targeting treatment shortening for tuberculosis (TB). The synthetic rifamycin derivative rifapentine (RPT) has been at the forefront of many of the treatment shortening approaches. RPT possesses greater potency and a longer pharmacokinetic (PK) half-life (t1/2) as compared with the long used rifamycin, rifampin (RIF). For TB preventative treatment, a 3-month, once weekly regimen of RPT and isoniazid (INH; 3HP) was shown to be as effective as 9-months of daily INH therapy in the PREVENT TB trial. Similarly, a 4-week course of daily RPT and …

Hashimoto Thyroiditis, Ojaswi Bhattarai Aug 2022

Hashimoto Thyroiditis, Ojaswi Bhattarai

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) is a type of autoimmune disease marked by thyroid-specific autoantibodies, which cause immune cells and antibodies to attack and kill thyroid cells. As a result, the body's mechanisms slow down, resulting in fatigue, coldness, weight gain, dry skin, and hair loss, among other symptoms. Although the exact cause of HT is unknown, it is thought to be caused by a combination of genetics, environment, physical activity, immunology, dietary intake, and epigenesis. High serum antibody concentrations against one or more thyroid antigens, as well as widespread lymphocytic infiltration of the thyroid, are clinical manifestations. Typically, HT is treated …

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common complication of surgical procedures and can lead to increased morbidity and mortality. AKI can be described by a sudden decline in kidney function, evidenced by elevation of serum creatinine, elevated blood urea nitrogen levels, and a decreased glomerular filtration rate (McCance & Huether, 2018, p. 1360). Optimal perioperative management and recognition of patients at high risk for AKI is important in preventing the development of acute kidney injury.

Myasthenia Gravis, Rebecca Wheeler Jul 2022

Myasthenia Gravis, Rebecca Wheeler

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

Myasthenia gravis (MG), a neuromuscular and autoimmune disorder, is not completely understood by clinicians and scientists. The primary cause is thought to be anti-Acetylcholine receptor antibodies that attack the neuromuscular junction, causing destruction of post-synaptic junctional folds and blockade of the receptor. This causes frequent weakness and fatigability of voluntary muscles, making activities of daily living difficult for those living with MG. Although it is not an incredibly prevalent disease, the incidence is increasing in the United States due to better testing and diagnosis. Treatments are available, including cholinesterase inhibitors that raise the concentration of Acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction …
