Physiotherapists Description Of Patient-Centered Care, And Barriers And Facilitators Experienced To Implementation, Maclean Jordan

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Patient-centered care (PCC) is a growing standard for healthcare delivery due to the benefits to patient autonomy. Lacking a cohesive definition in the physiotherapy literature, it is also lacking in implementation. Employing interpretive description with semi-structured interviews, the goal was to understand how physiotherapists drawn from private for-profit clinics in Canada describe PCC, and barriers and facilitators to providing it. Results included requiring person-centered communication in PCC, seeing Health holistically, centering the patient in care, and being a skill that becomes clearer with practice experience. Barriers included: lack of practitioner reflexivity, patient not desiring self-directed care, and limited access to …

Implementing An Infant-Driven Feeding Practice Model, Ann P. Nguyen May 2023

Implementing An Infant-Driven Feeding Practice Model, Ann P. Nguyen

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Neonatal feeding practices have been the focus of many quality improvement studies due to large variations in care practices. Traditionally, the model for neonatal feeding has been a volume-based approach, one that focuses on a prescribed quantity consumed rather than the infant’s physiologic and developmental maturity (Fry et al., 2018). Recent literature has emphasized the benefits of a more developmentally supportive feeding approach in neonatal intensive care units (NICU), the infant-driven feeding model (IDF).

The IDF model focuses on individualized care, quality of the feed, and continuous assessment of feeding cues both before and during the feeding experience. Current literature …

Navigating, Negotiating, And Narrating: Re-Envisioning Patient-Centered Chronic Illness Care, Wilma J. Koopman Mar 2022

Navigating, Negotiating, And Narrating: Re-Envisioning Patient-Centered Chronic Illness Care, Wilma J. Koopman

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Patient-centered care (PCC) is ubiquitous in how we think about patient-practitioner encounters. But such a taken-for granted stance may unknowingly obscure how conversations actually unfold in real life. The purpose of this work is to unravel the disconnect between how patient-centered care is talked about and how it is implemented in the real world. The overarching research question that framed this study was: What are the influences that shape the unfolding of the conversations that occur at chronic illness health encounters and how does this unfolding influence the learning and execution of PCC? The aim of this research was …

Searching For The 'Good' In Physiotherapist Practice: Toward An Ethic Of Care, Michelle J. Kleiner

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The qualities and practices of a ‘good’ physiotherapist have not been systematically reviewed nor have practitioners’ perspectives been empirically investigated. Understanding what constitutes a ‘good’ physiotherapist has potentially profound implications that may inform professional priorities including education curricula, professional practices, competency profiles, and patient interactions. The research purpose was to examine perceptions of what constitutes a ‘good’ physiotherapist. This dissertation includes four integrated manuscripts. The first is an integrative review to critically examine how physiotherapists and patients describe the qualities of a ‘good’ MSK physiotherapist as depicted in peer-reviewed literature. Six qualities were identified as: responsive, ethical, communicative, caring, competent, …

Nurse Practitioner-Led Care Pods: A Team Communication Enhancement Model, Miranda Saint-Louis, Miranda Saint Louis Dec 2021

Nurse Practitioner-Led Care Pods: A Team Communication Enhancement Model, Miranda Saint-Louis, Miranda Saint Louis

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Background: Communication has become a key performance measure in the shift to value-based healthcare. Given the impact of communication failures on patient harm, length of stay, and dissatisfaction with care, new models of care with better communication through structured teamwork and interdisciplinary collaboration are needed.

Problem: In a 16-bed geriatric medical/surgical unit of a New York City multispecialty community hospital, the workflow structure unintentionally created inconsistent handoff communication, gaps in continuity of care, missed care events, and inattention to the patient’s priorities in the care plan. A gap analysis identified communication deficiencies that impacted team effectiveness and patient care …

Older Adults Perspectives Of Bed Bathing, Nikki D. Sumner, Katherine C. Hall Phd

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The purpose of this qualitative pilot study is to explore the patient perspectives about what it is like to receive a bed bath. Examining studies of bath basins versus alternative methods has shown a decrease in the spread of nosocominal infections. However, there is not sufficient evidence evaluating the patient perspectives of assistive bed bathing and interactions with nurses and nursing support staff. This information can provide healthcare providers, especially nurses, with a better understanding of patient perspectives and values. It also supports the national healthcare approach towards patient-centered care.
