Adaptations And Transformations: Perceptions Of Change In Academic Motivation, Resilience, And Covid-19 Stress, Ella V. Gregorio
Adaptations And Transformations: Perceptions Of Change In Academic Motivation, Resilience, And Covid-19 Stress, Ella V. Gregorio
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Of concern to educators, post-COVID-19 assessments have revealed significant achievement gaps in student performance, as well as significant decreases in adolescent mental health. Less is known about changes in achievement motivation. Here we ask how students perceive their own motivation and whether it changed between “before” the pandemic to the present (Fall 2022 - Spring 2023), about three years after the beginning of the pandemic when many school routines were returning to “normal.” To understand how variance in these perceived changes might be related to pandemic-related stressors, trait resilience, and current mental health, we conducted a large survey study (N …
Animal-Assisted Therapy In An Outpatient Pediatric Occupational Therapy Setting, Peyton N. Stolle
Animal-Assisted Therapy In An Outpatient Pediatric Occupational Therapy Setting, Peyton N. Stolle
Occupational Therapy Capstone Presentations
The use of animals to assist in the healthcare industry has been around for some time now, however, only recently have those in the occupational therapy industry begun looking at the effects that it would have on patients within their scope of practice. Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) has various uses, and recent studies have shown that the use of dogs within a healthcare setting can greatly increase patient motivation and well-being. However, prior literature shows that there are limited studies on the effects of AAT in a pediatric occupational therapy (OT) setting, specifically an outpatient setting. My capstone project aimed to …

Navigating Asynchronous Online Learning: The Impacts Of Active Learning And Assigned Group Work On Student Motivation, Belonging, And Inclusion, Shea Elisabeth Carr
Theses and Dissertations--Biology
Motivation, belonging, and inclusion are all critical factors for student success but can be difficult to support in asynchronous online courses. Active learning and required group work have been shown to increase student motivation in in-person and synchronous online courses, but little is known about their impact in online asynchronous settings. This dissertation aimed to 1) evaluate the effect of active learning on student motivation in an online asynchronous setting and 2) evaluate the impact of assigned group work on student motivation and perceptions of belonging and inclusion within the context of an online, asynchronous physiology laboratory course. It was …
Music As An Ergogenic Aid During Resistance Training In An Adult Population: A Pilot Study, David R. Boulais
Music As An Ergogenic Aid During Resistance Training In An Adult Population: A Pilot Study, David R. Boulais
Master of Science in Kinesiology
Music has been found to produce feelings and emotions of power, reduce physical pain, and manage mood and affect. Ergogenic aids are regularly used in the resistance training (RT) setting to help improve performance. While the ergogenic effects of music are widely documented in aerobic exercise, research is lacking in the RT setting. The aim of this study was to examine the possible ergogenic benefits of music during RT workouts. Twelve individuals (mean age in years 49.8 ± 17.5 years) participated in the present online study, with nine female participants (mean age in years 48.2 ± 17.7) and three male …

Performance in decoding of several lists of compiled nonwords following treatment phases were systematically measured by the researcher. Two of the three participants demonstrated …
Does State Of Mind Predict Prototype-Based Category Learning In Older Adults?, Kana Kimura
Does State Of Mind Predict Prototype-Based Category Learning In Older Adults?, Kana Kimura
Theses and Dissertations
Category learning plays an important role in day-to-day lives across all ages, allowing us to organize related experiences, develop expectations, and determine how we behave given those expectations. Despite its importance, the current body of literature on category learning in older adults is much smaller than that of other memory domains. Thus, little is known about how well older adults learn new concepts and what factors best promote learning novel categories. One factor that may affect category learning abilities is an individual’s state of mind. A number of studies demonstrate the effects of sleep, stress, affect, and motivation on cognition, …
Mental Health And Physical Activity Motivation During Covid-19, Cian Foley
Mental Health And Physical Activity Motivation During Covid-19, Cian Foley
Honors Program Theses and Research Projects
The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in worldwide lockdown measures which saw individuals confined to their homes and isolated from one another. Investigating The Influence Of Stress On Motivational Dysfunction In Male And Female Rodents, Emily Laine Errante
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Motivational dysfunction is present in a variety of disorders, including major depressive disorder, schizophrenia, and Parkinsonism and can negatively impact social functioning, employment, and treatment response. Interestingly, outside stressors and stress hormones have been shown to contribute to depressive episodes in humans and depressive-like behaviors in rodents, including reducing motivated behaviors. Effort-related decision making procedures have been utilized in both humans and animals in order to examine motivational dysfunction, as it offers a subject a choice between high effort/reward and low effort/reward options, but little research has examined the effects of stress on effort-related decision making behaviors. Moreover, almost all …
The Effects Of Autonomy-Supportive Vs Controlling Feedback On The Performance Of Novice Jugglers, Dominique Mullicane
The Effects Of Autonomy-Supportive Vs Controlling Feedback On The Performance Of Novice Jugglers, Dominique Mullicane
WWU Graduate School Collection
Coaches tend to take on many roles with their athletes (Conroy et el., 2006). In the majority of previous studies that use the self-determination theory (Deci & Ryan, 2000) as a theoretical framework applied to sport, athletes have preferred the autonomy-supportive coaching style over the controlling-coaching style (Amorose & Anderson-Butcher, 2015) and autonomy-support is correlated with key variables including autonomous forms of motivation, well-being, and enjoyment (e.g., Amorose & Anderson-Butcher, 2015; Felton & Jowett, 2013). Of course, many athletes want coaches who help increase their sport performance. Yet, the extremely limited research on the effects of autonomy-supportive coaching on participants’ …
The Utilization Of Physical Literacy To Understand Physical Activity In Individuals With A History Of Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction, Rachel Renee Kleis
The Utilization Of Physical Literacy To Understand Physical Activity In Individuals With A History Of Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction, Rachel Renee Kleis
Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences
Injury to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is common in physically active populations. Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) is commonly performed after injury in order to restore joint stability and knee function and return patients to desired levels of physical activity. However, not everyone will return to their pre-injury levels of sport after surgery and recent evidence reveals that individuals with a history of ACLR are less likely to meet the recommended physical activity guidelines. Specifically, previous literature has reported that individuals with a history of ACLR take fewer daily steps and participate in less moderate-to-vigorous physical activity compared to …

The Life-Saving Drug That No One Knows About: Naloxone Education And The Health Belief Model, Sarah Tilford
The Life-Saving Drug That No One Knows About: Naloxone Education And The Health Belief Model, Sarah Tilford
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Naloxone hydrochloride, popularly known by the brand name Narcan, is an emergency treatment used to reverse an overdose on opioid drugs. The CDC reports upwards of 26,000 individuals saved by naloxone between 1996 and 2014 (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2015). Despite this success rate, those outside of the medical field largely remain unaware of what naloxone is or how they can use it in an emergency, leading to needless loss of life. Many studies focusing on naloxone access and education have been unable to offer findings meant to increase the use and ownership of the drug by lay …

Job Satisfaction, Engagement, And Motivation For Nursing Leadership Among Millennial Registered Nurses, Oluwaseyi Stover
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
There is a shortage of nursing leaders because current nursing leaders who are in the baby boomer generation are retiring. Millennial RNs are needed to fill vacant nursing leadership positions, but millennial RNs are not satisfied in their jobs and lack motivation and engagement, which impedes their interest in nursing leadership positions. The purposes of this quantitative, descriptive, correlational study, guided by King’s theory of goal attainment, were to examine the relationship between job satisfaction, motivation, engagement, and the aspiration of millennial RNs for nursing leadership positions in the acute care hospital setting, and the combined effects of job satisfaction, …
Physical Activity Group On An Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit, Patricia Brown
Physical Activity Group On An Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit, Patricia Brown
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Physical activity is beneficial for the wellness of both the body and mind. Preventable physical diseases are the cause of the majority of deaths in individuals with severe mental illness (SMI) (Vancampfort et al., 2017). Motivation can be a barrier to regular physical activity. Learning by observation can facilitate maintaining behavior change. Thus, physical activity groups on an inpatient behavioral health unit were facilitated by exercise physiologists to improve mental health and physical health (Kaur et al., 2013; WHO, 2015). Lack of physical activity on inpatient behavioral health units is a common practice. The primary aim of this project was …
