An Educational Intervention On Provider Knowledge Of Hypertension Guidelines And Home Blood Pressure Monitoring, Alison Claire Oesterritter
DNP Projects
Background: While hypertension is the leading preventable risk factor for cardiovascular disease, disease control remains suboptimal. In the U.S., 47% of adults have hypertension, but only 25% are controlled. Despite having quality evidence-based guidelines, many recommendations are not implemented due to clinical inertia, or the tendency to not change therapy when targets aren’t met. Research has shown that this can be overcome with educational programs. Purpose: To provide training on hypertension guidelines and home blood pressure monitoring (HBPM) to overcome clinical inertia and improve patient outcomes related to hypertension. Methods: The project was a quasi-experimental, pre- and post- …
Expression Of Growth Differentiation Factor 15 (Gdf-15) In Placental Tissue Of Full- Term Pregnant Women With Hypertensive Disorders In A Western Australian Population, Elsa H. L. Chew
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Women who experience hypertensive pregnancy disorders (HPDs) during pregnancy, mainly pre-eclampsia (PE), are four times more likely to develop hypertension after pregnancy and therefore have an increased risk of developing cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in the future. Pregnancy involves a high level of cardiovascular stress and the development of some complications. This has the potential to increase a woman’s susceptibility to vascular or metabolic disease risk in the future. In this research, pre-eclampsia (PE) and pregnancyinduced hypertension (PIH) were representatives of HPDs and were analysed together for the expression of Growth Differentiation Factor-15 (GDF-15) relative to their healthy agematched controls.
GDF-15 …

Background: Underserved, rural, immigrant, low-income Latinx communities need to strengthen healthcare access to improve their quality of life (Capitman et al., 2009; McCartney et al., 2019; Save the Children [STC] Organization, 2021). Non-communicable chronic disease of physical and behavioral origin is the leading cause of morbidity for adults and children in Latinx communities (Campbell et al., 2020). Estimates of greater than 30% of the Latinx populations within the United States have these health needs, with projections to reach 28% of the U.S. population by 2060 (Eghaneyan & Murphy, 2019; Ortega et al., 2018).
Local Problem: If poor access to preventive …

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Manuscripts
Hypertension (HTN) can lead to heart disease which is the leading cause of death in the United States for men, women, and most racial and ethnic groups. Evidence-based practice supports early recognition of available self-care management (SCM) modalities to impact hypertension improvement and medication adherence. Best practices for heart disease prevention and management include lifestyle modification, reducing out-of-pocket costs, self-management support and education, and self-measured blood pressure monitoring. Successful evidence-based approaches within literature have addressed the modalities and successful outcomes.

Association Of Birth Weight And Preterm Birth With Subsequent Risk For Hypertension In Women From The Women’S Health Initiative, Christian P. Daniele
Association Of Birth Weight And Preterm Birth With Subsequent Risk For Hypertension In Women From The Women’S Health Initiative, Christian P. Daniele
Masters Theses
Hypertension is a chronic disease with an estimated prevalence of nearly 50% in US adults. In addition to sociodemographic and lifestyle factors, evidence suggests that in utero and early life exposures may contribute to life-long risk of hypertension. This study aimed to investigate the potential associations between an individual’s birthweight and preterm birth status with their risk for hypertension in the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) cohort. WHI is a large, multi-racial cohort of postmenopausal women. At study entry, birthweight and preterm birth status were self-reported by category (< 6 lbs., 6-7 lbs. 15 oz., 8-9 lbs. 15 oz., or ≥ 10 lbs.; ≥ 4 weeks premature or full term). Baseline and incident hypertension status were self-reported; mean systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and 30-second pulse were also recorded at baseline by trained study staff. Linear, logistic, and Cox-proportional hazards regression models were used to generate crude and adjusted beta estimates, odds ratios, and hazards ratios, respectively. After adjusting for demographic and lifestyle factors, we found that participants born at a low birthweight had a higher mean systolic blood pressure than participants born at a normal birthweight and were at increased risk for both baseline and incident hypertension. Women born at a higher birthweight had a lower mean systolic blood pressure and were at lower risk for baseline and incident hypertension. When compared to participants born full term, participants born preterm were at increased risk for baseline and incident hypertension. These results support current research on early life exposures and health risks later in life. Long term follow-up or targeted counseling may be required for individuals born prematurely or at low birthweights to prevent and treat hypertension and associated cardiovascular outcomes.
Awareness, Acceptance, And Equanimity: Relationships Between Trait Mindfulness, Stress, And Blood Pressure, Gabrielle Renee Chin
Awareness, Acceptance, And Equanimity: Relationships Between Trait Mindfulness, Stress, And Blood Pressure, Gabrielle Renee Chin
Theses and Dissertations
Hypertension (HTN) is associated with stress and unhealthy emotion regulation. Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) are said to help address stress-related diseases like cardiovascular disease by impacting stress and emotion regulation, yet studies of MBIs on cardiovascular health show inconsistent findings. Limited research has examined the basic links between trait mindfulness and cardiovascular health, leaving the active components of MBIs in this context unclear. Therefore, the current study examined the relationship between trait mindfulness and blood pressure (BP) in individuals with pre-hypertension (pre-HTN). Latent variables representing two conceptualizations of trait mindfulness -Monitor and Accept Theory (MAT) and Equanimity- were calculated using facets …
Remote Blood Pressure Monitoring Program: Program Evaluation., Brittany Walker
Remote Blood Pressure Monitoring Program: Program Evaluation., Brittany Walker
Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers
The prevalence of hypertension is high at the local, state, and national levels. In 2021, 39% of Kentucky adults were diagnosed with high blood pressure (CDC, 2021). Primary care providers are utilizing remote blood pressure monitoring (RBPM) to assist with the management of hypertension. Literature reveals that remote BP monitoring alone, without the use of other interventions such as counseling and education, may not effectively control blood pressure (Uhlig K, et al, 2013). This project evaluated the RBPM program utilized at a federally qualified health center in Louisville, KY. Patient engagement within the RBPM program includes BP measurement, communication with …

Implementation of an Educational Teach-back Program for Patients with Hypertension
Abstract
Problem: To improve health literacy and provide adequate health care to patients and their family, clear and effective dialogue is essential. The teach-back method is a technique utilized to confirm a patient’s level of understanding of care instructions done by relaying patient directions, and then confirming the patient understands by asking the patient to reiterate those directions. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to assess the effectiveness of using the teach-back method by health care professionals with their patients who have a diagnosis of hypertension or high …
Physical Exercise As A Lifestyle Modification To Lower Blood Pressure In Hypertensive Females With A Body Mass Index Greater Than 25, Kacee Pee
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Background: Hypertension affects many Americans nationwide and, if untreated, can cause heart attack, stroke, and chronic kidney disease. Hypertension (HTN) accounts for about 1 in 5 deaths of U.S. women and is a greater burden for women than men (Wenger et al., 2018). Women who are overweight increase their risk of developing hypertension. Lifestyle modifications, such as diet and exercise, are the first-line treatment for hypertension. Physical exercise is a crucial component of lifestyle therapy for the primary prevention and treatment of hypertension. Several studies consistently demonstrate the beneficial effects of exercise on hypertension, with reductions in both systolic and …

Modeling Antihypertensive Therapeutic Inertia And Intensification To Support Clinical Action Toward Hypertension Control, Benjamin Martin
Modeling Antihypertensive Therapeutic Inertia And Intensification To Support Clinical Action Toward Hypertension Control, Benjamin Martin
All Dissertations
Background
Hypertension is the leading modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease and consequent mortality worldwide. In the U.S., more than half of hypertension cases remain uncontrolled, despite availability of effective pharmaceutical treatment options. Evidence suggests that therapeutic inertia, defined as clinician failure to initiate or increase therapy when treatment goals are unmet, is the most influential barrier to improving hypertension control. Substantial rates of therapeutic inertia have been reported in ambulatory primary care settings where hypertension is typically treated and managed. Understanding and overcoming the forces driving therapeutic inertia in hypertension management is a critical strategy to reach population health …

Social Determinants Of Health And Blood Pressure Control In Black And White Us Adults, Oluwasegun Philip Akinyelure
All ETDs from UAB
Black adults in the US have 2 to 3 times higher rates of cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality compared to White adults. Most of the excess CVD mortality in Black adults has been attributed to their higher prevalence of hypertension and uncontrolled blood pressure (BP). In October 2020, the US Surgeon General published a Call-to-Action to improve hypertension control and identified social determinants of health (SDOH) as a major contributor to Black:White disparities in hypertension control. Prior research has showed that SDOH are associated with excess hypertension risk among Black compared with White adults, but data on their association with BP …

Objective Structured Clinical Examination For Intraoperative Hypotension And Hypertension Management, Andrew Mcginity, James David Ingram
Doctoral Projects
Managing intraoperative hypotension and hypertension is a non-technical skill anesthesia providers need to maintain patient safety. Upon transitioning from didactic training to clinical training, SRNAs may find it difficult to manage a patient’s blood pressure intraoperatively. The ultimate consequence of the delayed or improper treatment of intraoperative blood pressure perturbations is end-organ damage at the patient’s expense. Unintentionally causing a patient harm will lead to an SRNA losing confidence in their abilities. This OSCE is intended to increase SRNA confidence and competence regarding intraoperative hypotension and hypertension management before entering the clinical arena.
