Nicu Nurse Burnout: The Influence Of Moral Distress, Compassion Fatigue, And Spirituality On Burnout In Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Nurses, Lucia D'Andrea
Undergraduate Theses
Nurses face a multitude of interpersonal and individual expectations, challenges, and hardships every day of their profession. These experiences accumulate and can lead to burnout. This is especially true for nurses in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) who care for infants struggling with prematurity, congenital diseases, withdrawal, and more, all while working closely with grieving parents. This thesis specifically focuses on research discussing moral distress, compassion fatigue, and spirituality as variables associated with the experience of burnout. A critical review of current literature revealed patterns and inconsistencies in the relationships between these factors. Workplace Stressors and moral distress were found …
Implementing Mindfulness Meditation To Reduce Nurse Burnout, Jannelle V. Sanchez
Implementing Mindfulness Meditation To Reduce Nurse Burnout, Jannelle V. Sanchez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Abstract
There will be an estimated shortage of 100,000 nurses by the year 2022, with 500,000 seasoned nurses retiring. The nursing profession has recently experienced a devastating pandemic that left no time to combat the detrimental effects of burnout, specifically for intensive care nurses, who are the frontline workers of a physically and psychologically draining working environment conducive to burnout. Nurses experience burnout for a mixture of reasons, but mainly it is due to the lack of interventions to help them combat the disease. Mindfulness meditation represents an interventional tool that has been shown to reduce the negative stressors associated …

The Best Care Begins With Self-Care: An Educational Initiative For Nurses, Betty Sanisidro
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
An educational initiative was developed and implemented to aid in ascertaining if self-care modalities implemented by nurses lead to decreased symptoms of compassion fatigue and burnout, to support current research that self-care practices do prevent compassion fatigue and burnout, and to enhance the growing body of evidence to support nursing and self-care practices. This educational initiative and preventive program included the creation and implementation of a one-hour training session for early identification of burnout among occupational health nurses with a follow up self-enrollment in a four-week initiative focusing on self-compassion interventions and Mindful Self Compassion (MSC) for participating nurses. This …

Physical Therapy And Occupational Therapy Well-Being, Jenna Pilkington, Dara Musher-Eizenman, Cindi Baum, Elizabeth Emley
Honors Projects
There is a lack of research in the professions of physical therapy and occupational therapy. To be more specific, the areas of stress and burnout have been topics of research within the healthcare field for medical physicians and nurses, but currently there is little research looking at stress and burnout for physical therapists and occupational therapists. (Anderson 2015; Berry 2019). The current study aims to look at the emotional connections between patients and professions, along with the related emotional stress experienced by these professionals. A survey was administered to 59 physical therapists and occupational therapists for the purpose to give …
Exploring The Relationship Between Burnout And Supervisory Support Among Respiratory Therapists, Ahmad Eissa Alhaykan
Exploring The Relationship Between Burnout And Supervisory Support Among Respiratory Therapists, Ahmad Eissa Alhaykan
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Background: Respiratory therapists (RTs) provide patient-centered care in diverse clinical settings for various patients. RTs most frequently work with acutely injured and critically ill patients. Working with these populations often takes an emotional toll on the practitioner, resulting in high rates of burnout. A high prevalence of burnout has been detected among health professionals. Even though RTs face unique stresses in the workplace, there is a lack of research addressing burnout among these professionals. Because workplace stressors are not expected to decrease in the near future in healthcare organizations, the search for protecting factors against burnout, such as supervisory …
Addressing Critical Care Nurse Burnout, Julie Suarez
Addressing Critical Care Nurse Burnout, Julie Suarez

New Nurse Reality Shock & Early Burnout: Can Role Transition Education Received During New Nurse Residency Positively Affect Satisfaction?, Bonnie L. Stolzman
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Newly licensed nurses are at incredibly high risk for reality shock leading to early burnout which results in many of them resigning their positions or leaving nursing altogether. Common feelings leading to reality shock often involve exhaustion, cynicism, depersonalization, decreased self-efficacy, and decreased job satisfaction. The result of early burnout presents significant financial strain and quality concerns for our already struggling healthcare systems. In the 1960s and early 1970s, Marlene Kramer brought her research regarding newly licensed nurses and their experience of “reality shock” to publication. Kramer felt strongly that reality shock was a key factor that led newly licensed …

Use Of Compassion Fatigue Education And Guided Imagery To Reduce Compassion Fatigue In The Oncology Nurse, Laura Mahoney
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones
Abstract
Background: Oncology nurses are exposed to their patients’ extreme suffering and death. This exposure places them at risk of developing Compassion Fatigue. Compassion Fatigue is often described as trauma that results from caring for those that are suffering. Its sequelae are like post-traumatic stress syndrome, including emotional and physical conditions. Nurses experiencing Compassion Fatigue could jeopardize their health, as well as their patients’ health. Evidence-based interventions may reduce the risk or presence of Compassion Fatigue.
Objectives: The objective of this project was to test an intervention that could prevent or reduce Compassion Fatigue in the oncology nurse. Based on …

The term ‘silent epidemic’ has become fitting for Alzheimer’s disease, as it is now the sixth leading cause of death in the US. Caring for AD patients at home in the US costs billions of dollars each year. The current comprehensive literature review discusses the background/history of AD, pathology and modes of transmission of AD, behavioral and natural risk factors, prevention and treatment options, and how the aforementioned factors contribute to caregiver burnout and subsequently affect the AD patient. The extensive examination of the literature determined several gaps to be addressed. More specifically, burnout among AD caregivers has become an …
Empathy Training To Combat Provider Burnout In Geriatric Healthcare, Heather N. Block
Empathy Training To Combat Provider Burnout In Geriatric Healthcare, Heather N. Block
Honors Thesis
The correlation between provider empathy and the quality of patient care is strong (Hojat, 2016). Provider bias, whether conscious or unconscious, can be detrimental for patients, particularly for vulnerable geriatric populations. This population is especially vulnerable due to the ailments that often accompany age such as diabetic neuropathy, glaucoma, hearing loss, tinnitus, cataracts, retinitis pigmentosa, and illnesses that affect mobility. The Aging Awareness Activity was created to help future healthcare providers understand the difficulties facing the geriatric population. Using hands-on tools to simulate hearing, visual, dexterity, and movement impairments allows for participants to practice activities of daily living with impairment …

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has pushed nurses to exhaustion while leaving them with compassion fatigue (CF) and burnout (BO). Compassion fatigue is secondary to traumatic stress and exposure, while burnout is the state of exhaustion of one’s ability to manage with their work and personal everyday stressors. This study aimed to determine whether a daily use of a meditation app could change quality of life indicators amongst front-line nurses affected by COVID-19. With the help of the ProQol assessment tool, along with a pre and post intervention surveys, participants’ awareness and personal experiences were evaluated. The study consisted of nurses …
