The Uses Of Pins For Retention In Restorative Dentistry : An Independent Learning Program, Ali M. Asad
The Uses Of Pins For Retention In Restorative Dentistry : An Independent Learning Program, Ali M. Asad
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Although pins have been used since the 1800's for retention of dental restorations, their widespread use had been limited because supporting techniques such as impression, die materials, better handpieces and drills have only been perfected in the last two decades.
The pin technique allows for greater retention of restorative materials which otherwise might require considerable reduction of sound tooth substance; this is particularly paramount when insufficient coronal tooth structure is present. Also, the placing of pins in divergent directions gives excellent retention. Pin-retained castings reduce the need for deep cavity preparation in some cases.
Pins are useful in stabilizing hypermobile …

An Analysis Of Blood Cortisol Levels In Oral Surgery Patients Under Various Levels Of Intravenous Medication, Fred L. Bunch
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This study was designed to objectively evaluate each pharmacological component of the Loma Linda intravenous sedation technique. The results were evaluated as a function of stress as measured by plasma cortisol levels.
The study was conducted on fifty patients in groups of ten. Blood samples were taken at set procedure intervals during dental extraction of third molar teeth. A component of the Loma Linda technique was deleted from each of the groups to ascertain its role in sedation and relief of stress.
Results show a trend toward reduction of plasma cortisol levels as the procedure progresses, indicating a measure of …
Field Test Of An Experimental Language Development Program, Sadie Patton Fant
Field Test Of An Experimental Language Development Program, Sadie Patton Fant
MSN Research Projects
According to Lee (1971), during the past years, most research in the areas of language development has been concerned with the study of normal children. Nation (1972) reported that educators, speech pathol ogists, linguists, psychologists, and others have analyzed the structure of language, the development of language and the functions of language in human behavior. In the past, according to Nation, each discipline has tended to move in a particular direction without becoming aware of the research being done in other disciplines. Presently an increasing number of psycholinguists have been making use of the information from other disciplines, thus providing …
Obesity And Vegetarianism In Seventh-Day Adventist Women, Charlotte Ann Van Camp Darnell
Obesity And Vegetarianism In Seventh-Day Adventist Women, Charlotte Ann Van Camp Darnell
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This thesis describes a comparative study of 82 vegetarian and 21 non-vegetarian Seventh-day Adventist females ages 25 to 65 to discover if there is a possible correlation between diet and weight. The subjects were chosen by random sampling in the specified target population and were personally interviewed by the use of a questionnaire.
The general linear hypothesis analysis shewed that present age and relative weight at age 25 were significant in terms of present relative weight; however, physical activity and socioeconomic stratum were not significant. Diet, defined as vegetarian or non-vegetarian, was only marginally significant.
Conclusions of this study are …

The Requirement For Viable Platelets In The Coagulation Of Heparinized Blood, Karen L. Hay
The Requirement For Viable Platelets In The Coagulation Of Heparinized Blood, Karen L. Hay
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Activated coagulation times (ACT's) of heparinized blood or plasma samples containing normal platelets were compared with ACT’s of heparinized samples containing non-viable or abnormally functional platelets. The non-viable platelets were prepared by freeze/thawing, and the abnormally functional platelets resulted from the addition of adenosine or adenosine 5'-diphosphate (ADP).
The ACT’s of the heparinized samples containing treated platelets were considerably longer than the ACT’s performed on samples with untreated platelets. Treated platelets had no effect on unheparinized samples, however. This would indicate that, although platelet factor 3 (PF3) is sufficient to promote clotting of unheparinized blood, viable platelets, in addition, are …

The Effect Of A Pufa Diet On Human Red Blood Cell Levels Of 2, 3-Dpg, Sandra A. Dassenko
The Effect Of A Pufa Diet On Human Red Blood Cell Levels Of 2, 3-Dpg, Sandra A. Dassenko
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Fasting blood was collected at weekly intervals and the level of 2,3-DPG of the red blood cell was determined in 15 male subjects age 28 to 57 with serum cholesterol levels greater than 250 mg%. A lactovegetarian diet containing no cholesterol, a high level of dietary fiber and a P/S ratio of 4.0 was provided for 28 days.
During the course of the experimental period the 2,3-DPG increased by an average of 0.83> «moles/ml red blood cell which was highly significant (p^.001). This significant increase of 2,3-DPG which relates to an increased oxygen delivery capability of the red blood cells …
Oral Sensation And Related Vocal Parameters As A Function Of Age, Jayne P. Merrill
Oral Sensation And Related Vocal Parameters As A Function Of Age, Jayne P. Merrill
Speech and Hearing Sciences ETDs
Previous research has established relationships between chronological age and performance on an oral stereognostic task and between chronological age and perceived age estimates. Based on these findings, it is plausible that a relationship may exist between perceived age estimates and performance on an oral stereognostic task. The present study was designed to investigate the relationship, if any, between perceived age estimates and oral stereognostic performance. In addition, as all previous research in these two areas had utilized male subjects only, male vs. female performance on oral stereognosis was also examined. To substantiate previous findings, the relationship between perceived age estimates …
Articulation Error Rates For Oral Reading Tasks In Children With Developmental Apraxia Of Speech, Kenneth Jerry Arkell
Articulation Error Rates For Oral Reading Tasks In Children With Developmental Apraxia Of Speech, Kenneth Jerry Arkell
Dissertations and Theses
Recently, there have appeared in the literature treatment approaches for the disorder of developmental apraxia of speech in children. These treatment approaches make use of the visual modality, and specifically use reading stimulus materials to improve articulation skills. Several authors have endorsed this use of reading materials in the treatment of developmental apraxia of speech in children including Morley (1965); Rosenthal (1971); Rosenbek and Wertz (1972); and Rosenbek et al. (1974). These treatment approaches have been offered via the literature without the benefit of empirical verification that children with DAS will make fewer articulation errors while reading aloud than they …
A Comparison Of Language Delayed And Non-Language Delayed Children On A Dichotic Cv Syllable Listening Task, Mary Sharon Nilson
A Comparison Of Language Delayed And Non-Language Delayed Children On A Dichotic Cv Syllable Listening Task, Mary Sharon Nilson
Speech and Hearing Sciences ETDs
Numerous investigations have reported that normal listeners show a right ear preference for dichotically presented speech stimuli. This preference depends on the fact that the left hemisphere is dominant for speech. Performances of non-language delayed children tend to reveal the expected right-ear advantage, even though inter-subject variability is observed. Language delayed subjects exhibit rather unpredictable performances ranging from a lack of ear preference to a left-ear advantage. The primary purpose of this investigation was to compare the performance of a group of language delayed children with a group of non-language delayed children, on a dichotic CV syllable listening task. The …

Chronological Age, Mental Age And Socioeconomic Status Variance In Expressive Preposition Acquisition Of Young Children, Arthur J. Heckel
Dissertations and Theses
The present study was designed to determine the ages at which a sample of children between eighteen and forty-two months verbally and correctly express the fourteen prepositions known to be acquired by age four, using the Revised Expressive Preposition Test (REPT). The REPT was administered to sixty children chosen from day care centers and private homes within the metropolitan area of Portland, Oregon. There was no preference as to the sex, intelligence of the child or socio- economic status of the child's family. A statistical analysis was performed to determine the correlation between HEPT scores and the child's chronological age, …
Moving Toward Integration: A Study Of Theory And Practice In Feminist Therapy, Susan Amelia Thomas
Moving Toward Integration: A Study Of Theory And Practice In Feminist Therapy, Susan Amelia Thomas
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis describes a study designed to explore the emerging field of feminist therapy. The goal was not to test the validity of feminist therapy, to probe the assumptions on which it is based, or to compare it to other forms of therapy but to characterize the theory and practice of feminist therapy as it now exists. Feminist therapy was seen as growing out of the cultural and historical context of the feminist movement, which includes a critique of society with emphasis on the particular psychological consequences for women, and a critique of psychotherapy, particularly Freudian psychotherapy, as oppressive to …
The Relative Social Acceptability Of Three Types Of Alaryngeal Speech, Kathleen Dawn Stewart
The Relative Social Acceptability Of Three Types Of Alaryngeal Speech, Kathleen Dawn Stewart
Dissertations and Theses
As a result of the surgical removal of the larynx, the laryngectomee is no longer able to speak and must choose to learn a new method of oral communication if he wishes to communicate orally. Laryngectomees, speech clinicians and physicians need to be provided with information which will assist in the selection of the most appropriate type of alaryngeal speech for each individual. Social acceptability is one criterion which may be an important consideration. This study, therefore, compared three modes of alaryngeal speech: Asai, esophageal, and artificial larynx, on the parameter of social acceptability.
The Effect Of Masking On The Acoustic Reflex Threshold, Nancy E. Aldrich
The Effect Of Masking On The Acoustic Reflex Threshold, Nancy E. Aldrich
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This study investigated the effect of masking noise on the threshold for stapedial reflex. It has been shown that masking which shifts the hearing threshold causes a loudness function typical of recruitment. It was hypothesized that the stapedial reflex threshold remains the same in a masked situation as in the unmasked situation . It was suggested that this demonstrates recruitment in that the presence of noise reduces the range between hearing thresholds and stapedial reflex thresholds.
Ten subjects, with no known hearing loss or pathology involving the ear or reflex arc were used in this study. A 1000 Hz tone …
Sexual Parameters In Doctor-Patient Relationship, Judith Adams Perry
Sexual Parameters In Doctor-Patient Relationship, Judith Adams Perry
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
A survey to determine the attitudes and practices of physicians regarding touching (erotically and nonerotically) their patients was conducted with 164 female physicians. The results were compared with a previous study (from the University of California, Los Angeles) of male physicians. As compared with the UCLA sample of male physicians, more female physicians believe in and engage in nonerotic touching; but fewer female physicians believe in and engage in erotic touching. None of the female physicians reported sexual intercourse with their patients as compared with 33 or 11% of the UCLA sample of male physicians.
A Clinical Comparison Of The Effectiveness Of Two Intracanal Medicaments, Xp-7/Prednisolone And 1% Pcp/Prednisolone, In Reduction And Duration Of Post-Treatment Pain, Kenneth G. Whitnack
A Clinical Comparison Of The Effectiveness Of Two Intracanal Medicaments, Xp-7/Prednisolone And 1% Pcp/Prednisolone, In Reduction And Duration Of Post-Treatment Pain, Kenneth G. Whitnack
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This study was undertaken to determine which intracanal medication, 1% aqueous parachlorophenol with prednisolone or XP-7 with prednisolone was the most effective in reducing the severity and duration of post-treatment pain following initial, conventional endodontic therapy. The investigation was conducted by five endodontists in their private offices and utilized a double-blind technique.
The postoperative reactions of 343 patients were examined statistically. It was shown that there was no statistically significant difference in the reduction or duration of post-treatment pain with either drug. Other factors such as sex, age, location of tooth and presence of a radiographic lesion were statistically significant …

A Descriptive Study Of Women's Attitudes Towards Obtaining Or Not Obtaining Papanicolaou Smears, Linda J. Shults
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
It was the purpose of this study to identify the attitudes of a selected group of women which influenced their participation in Papanicolaou testing. These attitudes were inferred from the reasons women gave for obtaining the test. The subjects were randomly selected from the telephone book of a medium-sized town in Southern California. The 135 women who participated in the telephone interview were considered to be the respondents in the study.
A review of the literature revealed that through the annual use of the Papanicolaou smear, approximately 11,000 deaths every year from uterine and cervical cancer could be prevented, Attitudes …
