Epidemiology And Prevalence Of Deep Venous Thrombosis In Patients With Spinal Cord Injury, Aatik Arsh, Haider Darain, Syed Muhammad Ilyas

Pakistan Journal of Neurological Sciences (PJNS)

Pressure ulcers in patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) are associated with incredible financial cost and human sufferings. The aim of this retrospective study was to determine prevalence of pressure ulcers amongst patients with different levels of SCI.

Cerebral Stroke And Spinal Infarction After Coronary Artery Bypass Graft: A Casereport, Chun-Sheng Hsu, Hsiao-Wei Lin, Hsi-Hsun Su, Shu-Chuan Wu Dec 2012

Cerebral Stroke And Spinal Infarction After Coronary Artery Bypass Graft: A Casereport, Chun-Sheng Hsu, Hsiao-Wei Lin, Hsi-Hsun Su, Shu-Chuan Wu

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Cerebral stroke and spinal cord infarction are rare complications after coronary artery bypass graft (CABG). The coexistence of them in one case is extremely rare. Cerebral microemboli generated during CABG is connected to acute ischemic stroke. Spinal cord infarction after CABG is related to hypoperfusion of the spinal cord. Except for the cardiovascular disease, the use of cardiopulmonary bypass during or after surgery is also a risk factor for both of the complications. They are not only increase the length of hospital stay but also contribute to patient's poor prognosis. We reported a 61-year-old male, with histories of hypertension, type II …

Paraplegia Caused By Intramedullary Tuberculoma: A Casereport, Ching-Yao Yang, Huey-Wen Liang, Yen-Ho Wang, Wei-Hwa Liaw Dec 2011

Paraplegia Caused By Intramedullary Tuberculoma: A Casereport, Ching-Yao Yang, Huey-Wen Liang, Yen-Ho Wang, Wei-Hwa Liaw

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Tuberculosis is one of the oldest diseases known to affect humans and is a major cause of death worldwide. This disease, which is caused by bacteria of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex, usually affects the lungs, although other organs are involved in up to one-third of cases. If properly treated, tuberculosis caused by drug-susceptible strains is curable in virtually all cases. Spinal tuberculosis (Pott's disease or tuberculous spondylitis) often involves two or more adjacent vertebral bodies, and solitary tuberculoma of the spinal cord as part of a generalized infection is a rarity. Here, we report the case of a 54-year-old man …

Acute Paraplegia After Spinal Manipulation: A Casereport, Kao-Chih Chen, Yao-Jen Chen Dec 2011

Acute Paraplegia After Spinal Manipulation: A Casereport, Kao-Chih Chen, Yao-Jen Chen

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

This is a casereport about a 53-year-old female patient with a history of chronic back pain, suffered from complete paraplegia shortly after spinal manipulation. CT and MRI images consistently showed ossification of the ligamenta flava in conjunction with bilateral facet joints hypertrophy at the T10-11, T11-12 and L1-2 levels. Spinal cord injury with T12 paraplegia ASIA-A was thus diagnosed. Posterior laminectomy at the T10, T11, L1 and L2 levels and interbody fusion from T10 to L2 spines for fixation were performed. After rehabilitation, the patient regained some activities of daily living despite complete paraplegia. To raise public awareness, our report …

Conversion Paraplegia: A Casereport, Chin-Feng Yu Cheng, Shih-Ching Chen, Jiunn-Horng Kang Dec 2009

Conversion Paraplegia: A Casereport, Chin-Feng Yu Cheng, Shih-Ching Chen, Jiunn-Horng Kang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

A 21-year-old man had progressive weakness and numbness of bilateral lower extremities and sphincter dysfunction after a traffic accident. The image and electrodiagnostic study showed no significant abnormal findings. Conversion paraplegia was suspected due to unusual clinical presentation, which cannot be explained by neuropathologic lesions. After intensive rehabilitation, patient's functional performance improved significantly and he could walk independently without device. But later, a fibrous dysplasia lesion was found at left sphenoid greater wing. He received an operation to remove it. The relationship between his benign brain tumor and conversion disorder is unknown, but the tumor that compressed temporal lobe might …

Ultrasound Examination Of Shoulders In Wheelchair Users With Paraplegia, Jiann-Perng Chen, Yi-Pin Chiang, Gwo-Chi Hu, Wan-Yi Shih, Kuan-Wen Chen Dec 2008

Ultrasound Examination Of Shoulders In Wheelchair Users With Paraplegia, Jiann-Perng Chen, Yi-Pin Chiang, Gwo-Chi Hu, Wan-Yi Shih, Kuan-Wen Chen

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Due to the prolonged use of upper extremities for weight-bearing, the shoulder joints of paraplegic wheelchair-users are prone to injury. Once shoulder pain occurs, performance of activities required for daily living would thus be disturbed. In past studies, the shoulders of the spinal cord injured patients were evaluated with arthrography or magnetic resonance images and the rotator cuff injuries were found. In the current study, we used ultrasonography to detect rotator cuff injuries of paraplegic wheelchair-users. The factors associated with ultrasonographic findings were also investigated.Thirty paraplegic wheelchair-users, 26 males and 4 females, were recruited for this study. Both shoulder joints …

Bimalleolar Fracture After Spinal Cord Injury: A Casereport, Shie-Fu Shieh, Huey-Wen Liang, Wen-Hsung Hou, Yen-Ho Wang, Shih-Fong Huang Dec 2005

Bimalleolar Fracture After Spinal Cord Injury: A Casereport, Shie-Fu Shieh, Huey-Wen Liang, Wen-Hsung Hou, Yen-Ho Wang, Shih-Fong Huang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

The incidence of fracture is higher in patients with chronic spinal cord injury (SCI), particularly female and elderly patients, than in healthy people. Functional impairment due to SCI may lead to accidental falls and fractures, most of which are due to trivial injury or without known trauma. In addition, the inevitable osteoporosis in the paralyzed limbs of individuals with chronic SCI increases their risk of fracture. The lower limbs are more often involved than the upper limbs. Because of the sensory impairment associated with SCI, fractures may be difficult to diagnose, and treatment may be delayed. The treatment of fractures …

A Retrospective Study Of The Treatment Of Paraplegic Dogs, Marissak Kalpravidh Jun 2005

A Retrospective Study Of The Treatment Of Paraplegic Dogs, Marissak Kalpravidh

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The case records of 11 dogs recovering from paraplegia, caused by vertebral fracture, vertebral luxation, spondylosis deformans or intervertebral disk protrusion, were studied. The dogs were examined and treated at the animal hospital of the Faculty of Veterinary Science, Chulalongkorn University from June 2000 to October 2004. Upon presentation, all dogs were paraplegic and had weak superficial or deep pain sensations. Only 9 dogs had voluntary motor function in their hindlimbs or tails. Two dogs received both surgical and medical treatment, while the others received only medical treatment, consisting of the administrations of corticosteroids, aescin, vitamin B1 and antibiotics for …
