Linda Lê : Schizo-Positive?, Isabelle Favre Dec 2003

Linda Lê : Schizo-Positive?, Isabelle Favre

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

In her novel entitled "Calomnies", Linda Lê depicts a "mad uncle" and a young female writer fascinated with her uncle’s marginality. In this book, Lê presents a complex view of schizophrenia. Sometimes, the actions and thoughts of the uncle are reminiscent of Deleuze and Guattari’s concepts such as le corps sans organe and la machine célibataire. Some other times however, Lê pays attention to the past of the uncle and shows how, in Vietnam, he witnessed the hypocrisy of his family during the war. These passages are then closer to Laing’s theories, since the environment and conditions in which he …

Exercise And Dehydration In The Horse, Prawit Butudom Dec 2003

Exercise And Dehydration In The Horse, Prawit Butudom

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The intensity and duration of exercise has a major impact on fluid levels, electrolytes and acid-base balance in the horse. The changes range from rapid fluid and electrolyte shifts which accompany high-intensity exercise (VO2 max ≥ 100%) (i.e., racehorse) to substantial fluid and electrolyte depletion during Speed and Endurance Tests as seen at Three-day events. Depletion is also seen during prolonged endurance exercise, in which the horse performs a low-intensity form of exercise (30-60% VO2max). These fluctuations of fluid and electrolyte homeostasis have been implicated in the development of fatigue and can lead to medical problems when exercise is continued …

The kidney had an elliptical to ovoid shape with a size of 32x21x12 centimeters (length, width, and thickness). It was of multilobar or multipyramidal type, composed of 8 lobes, closely placed and separated by interlobar septae, some of which were perforated by minor interruptions. Each lobe had one calyx, connected to its secondary infundibulum which converged into two primary infundibula, one each on end of the renal sinus. The 2 primary …

Effect Of Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation On Postural Hypotension In Patients With Cervical Cord Injury, Max J. L. Chen, Pao-Tsai Cheng, Mei-Yun Liaw, Alice M.K. Wong, Wei-Shung Wong, Tshe-Shun Shie Dec 2003

Effect Of Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation On Postural Hypotension In Patients With Cervical Cord Injury, Max J. L. Chen, Pao-Tsai Cheng, Mei-Yun Liaw, Alice M.K. Wong, Wei-Shung Wong, Tshe-Shun Shie

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Postural hypotension is often observed in patients with cervical spinal cord injury. It may cause syncope, and interfere with sitting and standing trainings. Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) was reported to be able to alleviate and even prevent postural hypotension. The exact mechanism is not certain yet, but it may be related to vagal reflexes or muscle pumping actions. To investigate the effect of NMES on tetraplegic patients, we have recruited 10 patients with acute cervical spinal cord injuries (American Spinal Injury Association Impairment Scale A and B) suffering from postural hypotension. These patients were randomly divided into 2 groups: four …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (AIDP), also known as Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS),the most common illness that causes acute and generalized paralyzing condition in the post-polio era, is diagnosed dependent on the base of clinical manifestations with supportive evidence of electrophysiologic study and cerebrospinal fluid examination. GBS often begins with the distal part of four limbs followed by a progressive course as ascending weakness and may even involve respiratory , facial or oropharyngeal muscles. Spinal fluid examination often reveals elevated protein concentration without associated increase in cells. Plasma exchange has become the gold standard of GBS treatment; in patients contraindicated for plasma …

First Identification Of Neospora Caninum In Thailand, Than Kyaw, Prachin Virakul, Manop Muangyai, Wijit Banlunara

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

An immunohistochemical examination of aborted bovine tissues, collected from two dairy farms that had a high abortion rate (7%), detected the organism Neospora caninum (NC). Five out of 12 aborting cows (41.7%) were seropositive to NC using a competitive ELISA test. Neospora-tachyzoites were detected in the placenta of a seropositive aborting cow. Neither NC parasites nor cysts were detected in other fetal tissues. The identification of the Neospora-parasite and a high percentage of Neospora seropositive aborting cows, suggested NC as the possible cause of abortion. This is the first identification of the NC parasite in Thailand.
