The Exploration Of Utilization Of Traditional Chinese Medicine Among People With Spinal Cord Injury In Central Taiwan, Hong-Li Lee, Liu-Ing Bih
The Exploration Of Utilization Of Traditional Chinese Medicine Among People With Spinal Cord Injury In Central Taiwan, Hong-Li Lee, Liu-Ing Bih
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
People with spinal cord injury often asked help to manage the symptoms such as spasticity, inco-ntinence of sphincter or paresthesia with combination of Western medicine and traditional Chinese medicine. In order to explore the popularization of, perceived effectiveness of traditional Chinese medicine, and difficulty to be faced when utilizing traditional Chinese medicine among people with spinal cord injury in central Taiwan, we collected and analyzed 115 effective questionnaires of them who had ever used Chinese medicine after injury. The results showed: the ways utilizing traditional Chinese medicine most were prescribed Chinese herbs (27.4%), acupuncture (25.6%) and Chinese massage (20.0%), the …
The Urological Management Of Voiding Dysfunction In Chronic Spinal Cord Injury, Hann-Chorng Kuo
The Urological Management Of Voiding Dysfunction In Chronic Spinal Cord Injury, Hann-Chorng Kuo
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Chronic spinal cord injury (SCI) results in various dysfunctions of the urinary bladder and urethra. These neurological deteriorations after SCI cause varying urological symptoms and complications. Early detection of high risk SCI patients is important. Regular determination of intravesical pressure, residual urine and leak point pressure can provide information to avoid upper tract deterioration. Agg-ressive urological management can reduce the mortality rate from urinary tract infection (UTI) and a better quality of life can thus ensue. In the management of urological sequalae of SCI, preservation of renal function, freedom from UTI, freedom from indwelling catheter, and continence should be the …

F-Wave Studies In L5 Radiculopathic Patients Receiving Automated Percutaneous Lumbar Disectomy, Chien-Hung Lai, Ming-Shium Hsieh, Wei-Han Chiang, Sung-Hui Tseng, Chao-Jung Chen, Shih-Ching Chen
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Background and purpose: Herniated intervertebral disc with radiculopathy may prolong F-latency and reduce F-persistence. The aim of this study was to investigate changes of F-waves in patients with L5 radiculopathy before and after automated percutaneous lumbar disectomy (APLD).Methods: Eight patients (aged 26 to 39 years) with L5 radiculopathy were recruited. The L5 radiculopathy was diagnosed by radicular pain and motor/sensory deficit and was confirmed by MRI. F-latency and persistence of the deep peroneal nerve were measured before and after APLD. To enhance the F-wave response, a stimulus duration of 0.3 ms was used, and patients were asked to contract the …

Analysis Of Cane-Assisted Gait In Patients With Hemiplegic Stroke, Chia-Ling Chen, Hsieh-Ching Chen, Fuk-Tan Tang, Kuo-Dai Hou, Wei-Hsien Hong, Rong-Shun Chen, Bel-Wen Lu, May-Kuen Wong
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
The purpose of this study is first to analyze the temporal-stride parameters and forces applied on the cane, and both feet in stroke patients walking with cane-assistance. Three force plates, six cam-eras, and an instrumented cane were integrated to conduct an analysis of the cane-assisted gait of 15 hemiplegic patients. Temporal-stride parameters, and peak vertical, anterior (propulsive)-posterior (braking) and lateral shear forces, and propulsive-breaking impulses, were analyzed. All patients walked with a relatively slow walking speed, the average is 16.1 cm/sec, ranging from 4.2 to 35.8 cm/s. The average step length is 38.2 cm. The triple and double support occupied most …

Assessment Of Anthropometric Factors Of Hand And Wrist In Patients With Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Hui-Wen Chen, Chein-Wei Chang, Yi-Jane Wu, Keng-Yu Chao
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common entrapment neuropathy. It has been associated with many conditions, including age, gender, work and body mass index etc. The aim of the study is trying to ass-ess the anthropometric factors and range of motion of hand and wrist in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome. Twenty-one patients with carpal tunnel syndrome approved by clinical and electrophysiol-ogical studies, and eighteen normal controls attended this study. Anthropometric factors includling hand width, hand length, palmar length, palmar thickness, wrist width, wrist thickness and range of motion of wrist joints were assessed in the patient and control groups. The results …

The Effects Of Exercise Training On Cardiopulmonary Endurance And Depression Status Of Hemodialysis Patients, Shu-Hua Liu, Wil-Ly Chou, Yu-Lin Wang, Hang-Tan Ling, Wen-Chun Huang, Jing-Tz Shen
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
The purpose of the study was to explore the effects of exercise training on cardiopulmonary endurance and depression status of hemodialysis patients. The purposive sample was recruited from a medical center in southern Taiwan. A total of forty hemodialysis patients were assigned into the experimental and control groups. Twenty patients in the experimental group underwent a 30-50 minutes, three times a week, stationary bicycle training during off-dialysis period for eight weeks. Twenty patients in the control group did not receive any exercise. The exercise test was administered to measure the cardiopulmonary endurance and the Beck Depression Scale was used to …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Puppies antibody titer response to Canine Distemper virus (CDV) before and after vaccination with a CDV-combined vaccine was studied using a serum neutralization test (SN). A total of 201 samples were obtained from puppies at the Small Animal Hospital, Faculty of Veterinary Science, Chulalongkorn University. The result showed that 100%(82/82) of the puppies, before vaccination, had no detectable SN titre (CDV SN-titer <2). Puppies 14 days after the first and second vaccination had a log2 (geometric mean titer, GMT) of 5.2 and 7.8. A group of 20 puppies in which the antibody response was followed after vaccination for a period of time showed the comparable results (log2 [GMT] = 5.3 and 8.5, respectively). There was no difference in the CDV SN-titers among puppies of different ages at vaccination, nor those with a vaccination history for their mothers (p>0.05).

The diagnosis of canine distemper (CD) by a reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) technique using 2 sets of primer which were specific to two regions on the cDNA of nucleocapsid protein (NP) gene of the canine distemper virus (CDV), Onderstepoort strain. Together with pathology and immunohistochemistry, the RT-PCR test was used to confirm the diagnosis of canine distemper in 20 dogs. Histopathological examination revealed that 70% (14/20) had pneumonia, 50% (10/20) had non-suppurative encephalitis, 33% (7/20) had splenic follicular necrosis and 35% (7/ 20) had gastroenteritis. Immunohistochemical detection of CDV antigens in the brain, lungs, and the gastrointestinal mucosa …
