Researchers have predicted that by 2020 the United States will experience a severe shortage of registered nurses. The purpose of this correlation study, using the National Sample Survey of Registered Nurses 2008, was to investigate the relationship between nurse job satisfaction and its effect on nurse retention nationwide. Secondary data sets from the 2008 National Sample Survey of Registered Nurses and examining relationships between the variable of nurse retention and job satisfaction. Tobacco use is the leading cause of premature and preventable death in the United States, yet millions of Americans continue to use tobacco. Nursing professionals comprise the largest health care provider group and can help improve tobacco cessation among their patients. The purpose of this doctoral project was to increase nursing staff and advanced practice providers knowledge, skills, and confidence related to tobacco cessation interventions. Nurse managers are stakeholders in creating a culture of nurse retention. The purpose of this staff education project was to identify evidence-based best practices that promote nurse retention and to educate nurse managers about these strategies. Knowles's theory of adult learning was the theoretical framework for the project. The practice-focused question addressed whether an education program for nurse managers would increase their understanding of evidence-based strategies to create a culture of nurse retention. Sepsis is a life-threatening organ dysfunction disease process that costs the healthcare system millions of dollars each year. By using existing assets, the number of patients admitted to the hospital suffering from sepsis secondary to community-acquired pneumonia can be reduced.
