Comparing Covid-19 Effects In Bolivia, Ethiopia, And The United States, Mikayla Long Apr 2023

Comparing Covid-19 Effects In Bolivia, Ethiopia, And The United States, Mikayla Long

Scholars Day Conference

The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 was a horrendous, scary, confusing time for the entire world. I wanted to compare the protocols and policies the United States put in place and the results of cases and death due to the virus to two third world countries. I went on a medical mission trip to Nicaragua, and I could still see the effects of the pandemic two years after it had occurred. I chose Bolivia and Ethiopia to compare to the United States. I compared their policies, national emergency guidelines, number of COVID-19 cases, and cultural values. It was very interesting to …

The Effects Of Light Intensity And Cell Structure On The Cultivation Of Arthrospira Platensis, Taylor Barnhart Apr 2023

The Effects Of Light Intensity And Cell Structure On The Cultivation Of Arthrospira Platensis, Taylor Barnhart

Scholars Day Conference

As scientists explore further into space, more cost-effective resources are needed for long-term space travel. An interesting solution is Arthrospira platensis, a filamentous cyanobacteria high in proteins and nutrients, and known for its helical structure. In unfavorable conditions, coiled spirulina cells become straight. Spirulina converts carbon dioxide gas into pure oxygen and the different cell structures stimulate different responses in oxygen production and cultivation. In these experiments, 2.3 L containers of pure coiled spirulina and mixed (coiled and straight) spirulina were placed into 3 incubators with different light intensities: 51µmol/m2/s, 25µmol/m2/s, 12µmol/m2/s. Each experiment length was 72 hours and the …

The Effect Of Nurse-To-Patient Ratio On Medication Errors, Karlee Sutterfield, Jacob Holt, Jasimine Riley Apr 2023

The Effect Of Nurse-To-Patient Ratio On Medication Errors, Karlee Sutterfield, Jacob Holt, Jasimine Riley

Scholars Day Conference

This review of literature aims to find evidence for a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:2 and the effect it has on reducing medication errors in the intensive care unit (ICU). The review of literature was conducted to explore factors that contribute to medication errors and the benefits of a 1:2 nurse-to-patient ratio versus a 1:3 nurse-to-patient ratio in the ICU. The evidence can help inform staffing decisions makers about safe nurse-to-patient ratios in the ICU and the effect this ratio has on reducing medication errors. A secondary aim is to assess the potential benefit of a 1:2 nurse-to-patient ratio on additional …

Assessment Of Undergraduate Students' Knowledge And Consumption Of Electrolytes And Hydration, Emma Starkman, Emma Starkman Apr 2023

Assessment Of Undergraduate Students' Knowledge And Consumption Of Electrolytes And Hydration, Emma Starkman, Emma Starkman

Scholars Day Conference

The purpose of this research was to determine the knowledge that undergraduate students have regarding electrolytes and hydration and assess where further dissemination of knowledge is needed. Considering the essential nature of water and electrolytes and the limited research in this specific subject, the knowledge and consumption thereof by college students was deemed a needed area of assessment.

Nausea Control Using Cannabis Vs. Pharmacological Interventions While Undergoing Chemotherapy, Jenna Rogers, Fernanda Valencia, Hayli Woolley

Scholars Day Conference

Cancer patients who undergo chemotherapy typically experience nausea and vomiting. The patient is in turn prescribed multiple medications in order to remedy all the side effects. The purpose of this study is to determine if the use of oral cannabis is more effective in reducing nausea and vomiting compared to the use of pharmacological interventions for nausea and vomiting control for people diagnosed with any stage of cancer who are undergoing chemotherapy treatment.
