ABSTRACT

Name: Lauren Thelen Major: Health Care Administration The Art of Healing from the Inside-Out: A Memoir

Advisor’s Name: Anandita Mukherji, Ph.D. Reader’s Name: Melissa Bosworth, MS

The health care system is no stranger to many of us. From before we are born to our last days, we interact with health care settings and providers. This is a good thing--we receive care and feel better--or at least that is the case most of the time. What this statement does not acknowledge is that the health care system fails us, through inadequate communication, dialect barriers and inability to diagnose. The purpose …

Can Biology Define A Human Life?, Katelyn De Leon Jan 2024

Can Biology Define A Human Life?, Katelyn De Leon

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

I grew up contemplating the concept of life. From my Catholic grandmother to my pediatrician mother, I always received mixed perspectives on the hot topics of abortions, vaccines, and embryo use. I found that the controversy lies in an ambiguous, mixed understanding of what constitutes a human life. From biochemical approaches to extraterrestrial life forms and spirituality there is no clear, coherent all-encompassing definition of life. However, that does not mean we can merely agree to disagree. The concept of a human life has drastic implications on our everyday lives. An insufficient definition has, and will continue to, diminish quality …

Mentoring The Mentor: A Mentor Training Program, Sheri Gillis Jan 2024

Mentoring The Mentor: A Mentor Training Program, Sheri Gillis

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Mentorship has played an important role in nursing and nursing education for decades. However, there have yet to be any standard qualifications or training programs for those who mentor others. Poor mentorship increases faculty turnover, stress, and poor student outcomes. A quality improvement initiative was implemented in the Associate Degree Nursing Program using an evidence-based approach. Using a pre-post survey design with convenience sampling, five (N=5) nursing faculty met the qualifications to participate in the mentor training program. The Mentor Efficacy (MES) survey, which consisted of 30 questions, was administered to measure the participants' feelings of self-efficacy in the mentoring …

Implementation Of A Revised Intubation Checklist For A Critical Care Transport Team, Teresa Zuber Jan 2023

Implementation Of A Revised Intubation Checklist For A Critical Care Transport Team, Teresa Zuber

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Critical care transport teams are often tasked with performing endotracheal intubation (ETI) during transport while adhering “to the same standards as in-hospital emergency anesthesia” (Lockey et al., 2017). One transport team adopted a checklist in 2014 to meet this high standard, but because of changes in equipment and practice expectation, an updated version was needed. The purpose of this quality improvement (QI) project was to design an updated checklist and measure the following primary outcomes: first pass success and steps taken to mitigate hypoxia and hypotension (and/or elevated shock index) prior to intubation. Additionally, a survey was administered to the …

How Sleep Disturbances Affect Those With Borderline Personality Disorder And The Implications For Treatment, Molly L. Schmanke Jan 2023

How Sleep Disturbances Affect Those With Borderline Personality Disorder And The Implications For Treatment, Molly L. Schmanke

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

This thesis argues that there is limited research on Borderline Personality Disorder’s comorbidity with sleep disorders, and by pointing out the gaps in knowledge this will encourage researchers and doctors to consider this topic as important in the health care field. Sleep disorders can be anything from reduced total sleep time, fragmented sleep, and changes in sleep architecture, and all of these can cause and be caused by disruption of the circadian clock. There are various ways in which circadian clock disruption can cause diseases, cancer, and mental disorders through genes, sleep, and the environment. Borderline Personality Disorder comorbid with …

Cultivating Health, Not Wealth In The United States' Healthcare System: Comprehensive Revisions For The Orphan Drug Act Of 1983, Kayla Smith

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

This thesis explores the way in which the Orphan Drug Act of 1983, originally instituted in response to a lack of treatments for rare diseases in the United States of America, has failed to achieve its initial objectives in the 40 years since its implementation. In evaluating various successful examples of government subsidization programs designed to intervene in private industry, this thesis composes the criterion required for funding-based legislation which maximize market outcomes while minimizing tax-payer burden. An analysis of the synthetic organic chemistry industry – and a case study into the production of a particular orphan treatment for a …

Utilizing An Educational Intervention To Increase Advance Directive Completion Rates For African Americans In A Family Practice Clinic In Louisiana, Nicole N. Richards Jan 2023

Utilizing An Educational Intervention To Increase Advance Directive Completion Rates For African Americans In A Family Practice Clinic In Louisiana, Nicole N. Richards

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Abstract

Advance care planning (ACP) is a process that allows for an individual to document ahead of time the medical treatment they want if they are unable to communicate after an unexpected life-threatening situation. The legal forms used to document these wishes are called advance directives (ADs). Since African Americans (AAs) develop chronic disease at younger ages and often experience shorter lifespans than other racial groups, it is imperative that they have a clear understanding of the pros and cons of ACP. Regrettably, because AAs seldom complete ADs, more aggressive, and often, ineffective medical care is provided at the end …

Robotic Team High Reliability Organization’S Communication Evaluation Tool, Joanne F. Mercurio Jan 2023

Robotic Team High Reliability Organization’S Communication Evaluation Tool, Joanne F. Mercurio

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Multidisciplinary team communication in robotic surgery presents several safety considerations for the intraoperative surgical patient. It is an important consideration since the surgeon and the operating room team are geographically distanced with the surgeon at the console, and the other team members situated at the patient bedside. Scrubbed team members are performing such functions as positioning the robotic arms as well as exchanging instruments, while the remaining interprofessional team members are coordinating multiple patient care activities. It therefore becomes imperative that the recognition of the potential for miscommunication is of paramount importance, and strategies need to be generated that will …

Abstract

Background: Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID), which includes sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), is one of the leading causes of infant deaths in the United States and a significant health issue. Although there has not been a distinct single cause found for SIDS, it has been determined that there are several risk factors identified that increase the risk of an infant dying from SIDS. Infant Safe Sleep Education as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics is essential for healthcare professionals to educate new families on infant safe sleep.

Objective: The objective of this project was to create and …

The Impact Of Self-Care On Nursing Faculty Burnout And Worklife, Jennifer J. Harrington Jan 2023

The Impact Of Self-Care On Nursing Faculty Burnout And Worklife, Jennifer J. Harrington

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Nursing faculty are relied upon to prepare the nursing workforce of the future. The stress and pressure felt by nursing faculty impacts their ability to practice self-care, and this threatens their ability to perform optimally. Lack of self-care can lead to diminished quality of life, and ultimately burnout. Feelings of burnout and decreased quality of life, which are precursors to faculty turnover, further perpetuates the nursing shortage. A Quality Improvement (QI) Pilot Initiative, with an evidence-based design methodology was implemented within one university’s nursing department, located in a western state, to address this problem. Using a pre-post survey design and …

Dying To Be Masculine: The Barriers Men Face To Accessing Genetic Counseling, Malia Olson Jan 2022

Dying To Be Masculine: The Barriers Men Face To Accessing Genetic Counseling, Malia Olson

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

There is a crisis in healthcare that is often not discussed: men’s health. Men die younger, are more burdened by illness during life, fall ill at a younger age, and have more chronic illnesses than women. Contradictory concepts of health, struggles with help-seeking, and worse healthcare outcomes and life expectancies for men can be traced back to attempts to conform to hegemonic masculine ideals or social norms. Although researchers have studied the stigma of help-seeking in men, these ideas have yet to be extended to the field of genetic counseling. This review outlines the barriers that men face when accessing …

Following IRB approval for the study, a self-report tool consisting of 18 questions was emailed to a national sample of NPs who graduated 2014-2020 and practiced at least one year but not more than five years …

The Inevitability Of Collision: Creating Empathy Through Fiction, Danielle Beckman Jan 2021

The Inevitability Of Collision: Creating Empathy Through Fiction, Danielle Beckman

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

While the stigma for mental illnesses has greatly declined in the last decade, there is still a disconnect between individuals without neurological illnesses and those with neurological illnesses, especially those that cause individuals to lose contact with reality. The goal of this interdisciplinary paper is to create empathy for these individuals, specifically people with schizophrenia, Alzheimer disease, and post-traumatic amnesia. Through a collection of four stories told from the perspective of these unreliable narrators, I used fiction writing techniques from the field of cognitive literary studies such as gapping and defamiliarization to create more empathy in the reader. In reading …

The consequences of the physiological dysfunction resulting from disordered eating is not limited to the time in which the individual has disordered eating, but can impact the individual for the rest of their life. I will summarize research about female athletes’ patterns of disordered …

International Medical Service Trips: Colonialist Roots And Ethics Of Global Health Today, Lorenzo Patti Jan 2021

International Medical Service Trips: Colonialist Roots And Ethics Of Global Health Today, Lorenzo Patti

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Service trips have become a relatively common part of society today. People in both the professional and academic world often jump at the opportunity to be able to travel through the lens of learning or working. Service trips are framed as excursions to help marginalized communities, in reality, the trips end up being more about tourism and travel. Despite the attractive façade of medical service, its harmful impact is evident when examining it further. Medical trips often fall into two categories, voluntourism and capacity building. Voluntourism has a number of flaws, which cause long-term detrimental effects to the communities visited …
