Occurrence Of Pulmonary Arteritis With Lungworm Infections In Gray Seals From New England, 2013-2020, Jillian R. Broadhurst, Inga Sidor Dvm, Ms, Dacvp

Honors Theses and Capstones

Gray seals (Halichoerus grypus) are a common pinniped species in New England coastal waters. Parasitic infection is an important cause of mortality for this species, and lungworm species are frequently implicated in cases of respiratory infection, especially in pups and weanling seals. The most common of these is Otostrongylus circumlitus, a large nematode found in the bronchi and bronchioles of affected seals. The full life cycle is unknown but its presence in lungs and sometimes pulmonary arteries suggests that migration via arterial circulation occurs. Signs and microscopic findings are widely variable; our cases included dyspnea, bloody mucoid …

Impact Of An Educational Module On Female Collegiate Athlete Knowledge Regarding The Female Athlete Triad, Cayla Marie Barretto Jan 2021

Impact Of An Educational Module On Female Collegiate Athlete Knowledge Regarding The Female Athlete Triad, Cayla Marie Barretto

Honors Theses and Capstones

The Female Athlete Triad was defined in women’s sport as early as 1992, by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). The guidelines regarding the Triad emphasis the importance of education in the prevention of the disorder. However, there is little research supporting if this education is occurring and if it is effective. A quantitative, quasi-experimental study was conducted at the University of New Hampshire. Twenty-five female collegiate athletes participated in a pre-test, educational intervention, and post-test to determine baseline knowledge and if there was any improvement in knowledge after education. Percent changes in scores from pre-test and post-test were …

Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate And The Racial Multiplier: Clinical Implications And Current Attitudes, Brittney A. Spooner Jan 2021

Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate And The Racial Multiplier: Clinical Implications And Current Attitudes, Brittney A. Spooner

Honors Theses and Capstones

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with high morbidity and mortality and has high and increasing incidence worldwide. CKD is characterized by a reduction in glomerular filtration rate (GFR), but as GFR is difficult to measure directly, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) equations have been created to measure serum creatinine levels as a function of GFR. Some eGFR equations contain a racial multiplier that increases the eGFR of black patients, causing a spurious increase in reported kidney function. This study included a literature search that collected information on the rationale behind the multipliers usage and a survey that gathered information …

Member Perceptions Of An Online Community-Based Program For Adults With Brain Injury, Krysten Elizabeth Walker Jan 2021

Member Perceptions Of An Online Community-Based Program For Adults With Brain Injury, Krysten Elizabeth Walker

Honors Theses and Capstones

The purpose of this study was to document member perceptions of an online community-based program that rapidly transitioned from an in-person format during the COVID-19 pandemic. To accomplish this, a sample of 24 adults living with brain injury who are members of the community program completed a survey, and a subsample of 11 of these participants were interviewed. Both quantitative and qualitative data were analyzed using a mixed-methods approach. Results from both methods coalesced around similar themes that indicated the importance of the program in increasing members’ quality of life. Survey results indicated that the majority of members prefer in-person …

Honors Theses and Capstones

Background: Rapid fluid resuscitation is essential to the management of pediatric shock, but there are many barriers to published guideline adherence. Limited evidence describing emergency department (ED) nurse’s knowledge and attitudes of fluid resuscitation exists. This study described pediatric ED nurse’s knowledge and attitudes of fluid resuscitation.

Methods: This single-site descriptive study used survey methodology. A 23-question survey was distributed to nurses in the ED at Boston Children’s Hospital. The survey measured nurse’s knowledge, attitudes, and perceived barriers to fluid resuscitation.

Results: Findings suggested gaps found between actual and perceived knowledge consistent with prior evidence. There was a 50.9% response …

A Critical Review Of Apraxia Of Speech And Childhood Apraxia Of Speech, Madison Joan Smith Jan 2021

A Critical Review Of Apraxia Of Speech And Childhood Apraxia Of Speech, Madison Joan Smith

Honors Theses and Capstones

The theories and neural bases of Apraxia of Speech (AOS) have long been debated. In 1861, Paul Broca identified two patients with speech/language impairments who became the basis for the theory on aphemia, now known as apraxia. Broca noted of patients with AOS that “there are cases in which the general faculty for language remains unaltered; where the auditory apparatus is intact; where all muscles—including those of speech and articulation—are under voluntary control; and where nevertheless, a cerebral lesion abolishes articulated language” (Broca, 1861/2000). The term “apraxia” was first introduced by Hugo Liepmann in 1908 and was described as “the …

Nurses’ Perceptions Of Caring For Patients In The Prone Position, Brianna Jean Judkins Jan 2021

Nurses’ Perceptions Of Caring For Patients In The Prone Position, Brianna Jean Judkins

Honors Theses and Capstones

Introduction: Prone positioning has been used for decades to supplement the treatment of patients diagnosed with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). The effects it has on improving lung aeration, reducing compression, and increasing alveolar recruitment, have become evident through continued research. As a result of the H1N1 and COVID-19 pandemics, proning has become a popular and effective adjunct to treatment. Despite its increased use, there continues to be minimal research regarding nurses’ perceptions of the maneuver and patient care. Objectives: The purpose of this study is to understand the perceptions of nurses caring for patients in the prone position. Identifying …

Can Nurses Predict Transitions Of Care In Assisted Living?, Emma M. Blair Jan 2021

Can Nurses Predict Transitions Of Care In Assisted Living?, Emma M. Blair

Honors Theses and Capstones

The older adult population is rising exponentially due to medical advances and the aging of the Baby Boomer Population (Wister, 2005). Many of these older adults are choosing to live in assisted living facilities due to the increased independence and decreased cost of living compared to nursing homes (Grabowski, Stevenson, & Cornell, 2012). Since nurses are the primary directors of care for those in assisted living, the question was asked if they can predict a resident’s length of stay based on their knowledge and clinical judgement. A prospective study was performed at an assisted living facility in Oakland, California to …

Mimicking The Effect Of Prolactin On Stat3/Stat5 Activity In Breast Cancer, Jennifer N. Barbuto, Sarah R. Walker Jan 2021

Mimicking The Effect Of Prolactin On Stat3/Stat5 Activity In Breast Cancer, Jennifer N. Barbuto, Sarah R. Walker

Honors Theses and Capstones

Signal transducers and activators of transcription (STAT) 3 and 5 are commonly constitutively activated in breast cancer. STAT5 can outcompete STAT3 and reduce cell proliferation and metastasis. STAT5 activation is stimulated by prolactin, a natural hormone that can be harmful at high levels. The aim of this study is to identify some possible previously developed drugs that mimic the effect of prolactin and STAT5 without the added risk in MDA-MB231 breast cancer cells. Using the CLUE database query app and STAT5 up- and downregulation signatures, three drugs (X, K, and M) were chosen based on their similarity in signatures to …

Sars-Cov-2: An Investigation On Mutagenicity And Its Effects On Infectivity And Mortality, Tyler Elliott Silverwood Jan 2021

Sars-Cov-2: An Investigation On Mutagenicity And Its Effects On Infectivity And Mortality, Tyler Elliott Silverwood

Honors Theses and Capstones

SARS-CoV-2, the etiological agent of the COVID-19 pandemic, has rapidly become a worldwide public health concern. Classified as a betacoronavirus, it is the third human coronavirus (HCoV) to emerge in the 21st century that causes severe disease, alongside SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV. The genome consists of open reading frames encoding accessory proteins and four structural proteins, including the spike protein which is a key determinant of host cell tropism. Mutations within the genome, particularly the spike gene, have been linked in-vitro to increased binding affinity to the human receptor angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (hACE2), increased fitness in human hosts, and immune evasion. …
