These models can be used to optimize and personalize medical treatments for individual patients, enhance training, and aid in educational efforts. This dissertation proposes novel texture feature-based computational models for quantitative analysis of abnormal tissues in two neurological disorders: brain tumor and stroke. Brain tumors are the cells with uncontrolled growth in the brain tissues and one of the major causes of death due to cancer. On the other hand, brain strokes occur due to the sudden interruption of the blood supply which damages the normal brain tissues and frequently causes death or persistent disability. Pulsed electric fields have been used to induce a biological response in cells, and at sufficient energy, can cause cell death. By reducing the pulse duration from presently used nanosecond to subnanosecond ranges, the electric field can be delivered to biological tissue non-invasively by the use of an antenna instead of electrodes, such as needles. Studies have previously been completed in which the aim was to determine the energy density (electric field strength, number of pulses) required to induce cell death with 800 ps pulses. This dissertation presents an investigation of non-uniform time sampling methods for spectral/temporal feature extraction in speech. Frame-based features were computed based on an encoding of the global spectral shape using a Discrete Cosine Transform. In most current “standard” methods, trajectory (dynamic) features are determined from frame-based parameters using a fixed time sampling, i.e., fixed block length and fixed block spacing. In this research, new methods are proposed and investigated in which block length and/or block spacing are variable.
