New graduate registered nurses (NGRNs) represent a crucial segment of the nursing workforce, embodying the future of the profession. Thus, it is imperative that we utilize our resources, knowledge, and experiences to continuously strengthen and grow this generation of nurses. Mentorship is one key method that can be used to support NGRNs. This DNP project aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of mentorship for NGRNs within their first year of nursing practice and was implemented within an existing residency program at a Level I trauma facility. Background: Burnout is feeling emotionally overwhelmed and exhausted due to stress in the workplace. Caring for acute psychiatric patients can impact the mental health of nursing staff and contribute to high-stress levels. Nursing burnout contributes to staffing shortages and increased risk for adverse patient safety events in an acute inpatient mental health unit.

Background: Due to their position on the forefront lines of the healthcare system, nurses are more likely to experience stress at work. Job-related stress can cause increased anxiety, emotional turmoil, depression, and other mental issues. Nurses commonly deal with elevated distress due to workload demands such as passing medication, checking for errors, ensuring patient safety, and charting—mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) is a useful means of reducing psychological distress.

The COVID-19 pandemic has pushed nurses to exhaustion while leaving them with compassion fatigue (CF) and burnout (BO). Compassion fatigue is secondary to traumatic stress and exposure, while burnout is the state of exhaustion of one’s ability to manage with their work and personal everyday stressors. Stress, compassion fatigue (CF), and burnout are all potential problems faced by those who have adopted a career in caring for others. Poorly managed stresses are associated with strained work interactions, dysfunctional personal connections, poor health, and poor quality of work (Edwards & Burnard, 2003; Richardson et al., 2015; Zajac et al., 2017). Organizations do well to focus on preventing stress, CF, and burnout; and or at a minimum providing, employees with tools to build resilience (Edwards & Burnard, 2003; Gentry, 2018; Zajac et al., 2017).

The national average nurse turnover rate was 18.2% in 2017 (Ackerson & Stiles, 2018). Burnout, attrition, and decreased work engagement among Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) are growing concerns and can have a negative influence on health care provider wellbeing. Chronic workplace stress is linked to various physical health problems, such as fatigue, insomnia, heart disease, depression, anxiety, and obesity. Chronic provider burnout is costly and extends to organizations and hospitals due to higher attrition, increased absenteeism, and decreased work engagement.
