Oncology nurses provide care to patients during some of the toughest times in their lives. This care places nurses at risk of developing compassion fatigue which can have negative long-term health impacts. There is currently no formal compassion fatigue education offered to oncology nurses. This lack of training leaves nurses vulnerable to the impacts of unmanaged stress, burnout, and compassion fatigue. This benchmark project was completed to bring awareness to the need for a mindfulness-based compassion fatigue course. This course will provide oncology nurses with the knowledge and skills necessary to manage these difficult emotions.

A mixed methods study was conducted whereby, the quantitative portion has a randomized control design, in an urban Delaware community to examine the effectiveness of an educational intervention, which included the testimony of an African American (AA) prostate cancer survivor on AA men’s (n=98) prostate cancer knowledge and self-efficacy for informed decision making. Guided by Bandura’s Social Cognitive theory, participants’ prostate cancer knowledge measured by PROCASE and for self-efficacy measured by the Prostate Cancer Screening Self-efficacy scale, were evaluated before and following viewing of the American Cancer Society’s prostate cancer video. Confusion exists on the roles and contribution of oncology nurses in the care of cancer clinical trial patients. Quantitative evidence of their roles and contributions is lacking in the literature and job descriptions vary. A study to fill this gap examined the dimensions of nursing practice and evaluated tasks performed by three groups of United States oncology nurses who practice in research settings: direct care providers, study coordinators, and those with a dual role of both coordinator and direct care provider.
