The Relationships Between Licensed Vocational Nurses' Care, Documentation, And Perceptions Of Dementia-Compromised Behaviors In The Nursing Home, Jennifer J. Yeager Dec 2013

The Relationships Between Licensed Vocational Nurses' Care, Documentation, And Perceptions Of Dementia-Compromised Behaviors In The Nursing Home, Jennifer J. Yeager

Nursing Theses and Dissertations

Behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia increase as Alzheimer's disease and related dementias progress; these symptoms occur in as many as 80% of persons with dementia living in nursing homes. Behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia, also known as dementia-compromised behaviors, are a source of stress for nursing home staff, family members, and other residents and adversely affect the quality of life and safety of residents. Ethnonursing, a qualitative research method, was used to examine the relationship between licensed vocational nurses' responses to dementia-compromised behaviors, documentation, and perceptions of dementia care. Data analysis resulted in three overarching themes related to …

Cultural Competence Of Taiwanese Nurses, Chin-Nu Lin Aug 2013

Cultural Competence Of Taiwanese Nurses, Chin-Nu Lin

Nursing Theses and Dissertations

Research on the cultural competence in nursing care in Taiwan is scarce. Little information has been documented regarding the level of cultural competence among its health care professionals. The aim of this study was to investigate the level of cultural competence among Taiwanese nurses. This study employed a quantitative design using a self-report online survey. Research findings indicated that Taiwanese nurses had low to moderate level of cultural competence. They perceived themselves as being not culturally competent when caring for clients from culturally and ethnically diverse backgrounds. While Taiwanese nurses scored high on cultural sensitivity and awareness, they scored low …

Military Nurses Caring For The Enemy, Sharon Thompson, Beth Mastel-Smith, Gloria Duke, Barbara K. Haas, Shellye Vardaman, Susan Yarbrough Aug 2013

Military Nurses Caring For The Enemy, Sharon Thompson, Beth Mastel-Smith, Gloria Duke, Barbara K. Haas, Shellye Vardaman, Susan Yarbrough

Nursing Theses and Dissertations

Purpose: This phenomenological study described the lived experience and aftermath of U.S. military nurses assigned enemy detainees during Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation Enduring Freedom. Two themes emerged: Insurgent Assignments (subthemes included identification of and interactions with insurgents; training, precautions, and ethical issues, thoughts and feelings, coping, and meanings of insurgent care) and The Aftermath (subthemes were mental, emotional, personal, professional, and positive). Conclusions: Insurgent assignments caused ethical dilemmas and challenged theoretical constructs related to caring. Formal training is needed to prepare nurses for the practicalities of and responses to insurgent assignments.

This work is the dissertation manuscript of Sharon Thompson, completed …

Alveolar type II epithelial cell (ATII) apoptosis and proliferation of mesenchymal cells are the hallmarks of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a devastating disease of unknown cause characterized by alveolar epithelial injury and progressive fibrosis. We used a mouse model of bleomycin (BLM)-induced lung injury to understand the involvement of p53-mediated changes in urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) levels in the regulation of alveolar epithelial injury. We found marked induction of p53 in ATII cells from mice exposed to BLM. Transgenic mice expressing transcriptionally inactive dominant negative p53 in ATII cells showed augmented apoptosis, whereas those deficient in …

"A Day In The Life:" A Simulated Experience, Melinda Hermanns, Narisa Waldo, Mary Luanne Lilly Jun 2013

"A Day In The Life:" A Simulated Experience, Melinda Hermanns, Narisa Waldo, Mary Luanne Lilly

Nursing Faculty Publications and Presentations

An experiential learning activity titled, "A Day in the Life" was implemented with nineteen baccalaureate nursing students in order to achieve a holistic understanding of the challenges faced by persons living with Schizophrenia and a physical disability, such as a fracture in an upper extremity or a visual impairment. The role play simulation required that students interact with public transportation and community resources, while assuming the role of a person with Schizophrenia and a physical disability. Using a qualitative descriptive methodology, reflective journals, aesthetic expressions, and post conference discussions about "A Day in the Life" were reviewed and analyzed by …

Challenges Of Smoking Cessation Research In Mongolia, Carol M. Rowley May 2013

Challenges Of Smoking Cessation Research In Mongolia, Carol M. Rowley

Nursing Theses and Dissertations

The deleterious impact of tobacco use on health has been well-known for years. Nevertheless, cigarette smoking is a behavior which generally is not easily abandoned due to its addictive propensities. Thus, it is important for nurses to be competent in the delivery of evidence-based smoking cessation interventions which can help their clients achieve tobacco-free status. This need is particularly urgent in nations with high smoking prevalence rates, including many developing nations. The purpose of this study was two-fold. First, an investigation was undertaken to determine the smoking habits and influences among Eastern European nations, the former Soviet Union, and Mongolia. …

Evaluation Of An Innovative Program To Improve Outcomes Among Military Beneficiaries With Diabetes, Carol A.B. Andrews May 2013

Evaluation Of An Innovative Program To Improve Outcomes Among Military Beneficiaries With Diabetes, Carol A.B. Andrews

Nursing Theses and Dissertations

Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) is a health care model implemented in all United States Air Force (USAF) medical facilities which uses a team-based approach to promote accessibility, quality care, and appropriate service utilization, while decreasing costs. To measure the effectiveness of this model, the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) has developed a tool to document and recognize facilities that incorporate all model elements. However, the effects of the full model implementation on patient outcomes in military settings have not been studied. This research fills an important gap in the literature because it studies the effect of PCMH implementation …

Fit To Care: An Action Research Study Exploring The Use Of Communication Theory To Strengthen Caring Relationships Between Teachers And Students, Pamela K. Lake May 2013

Fit To Care: An Action Research Study Exploring The Use Of Communication Theory To Strengthen Caring Relationships Between Teachers And Students, Pamela K. Lake

Nursing Theses and Dissertations

Watson's Theory of Human Caring lends theoretical structure to nursing curricula grounded in Caring Science. A key principle within the theory is the caring trusting teacher-student relationship. This relationship can be threatened by the need to relay instructional feedback to students when performance has fallen below standards. The tension resulting from this exchange is uncomfortable to all concerned and can damage the relationship and lead to even worse student performance. Nursing literature has not reported studies addressing this problem. Communication studies have extensive reports of such research. Feedback Intervention Theory (FIT) is based on skilled facework to improve student outcomes …
