Molecular Investigation Of Genetic Variability Among Borrelia Infecting Ticks In Florida Using Base Exision Sequence Scanning, Larry W. Martin

All Volumes (2001-2008)

Lyme disease (LD), the most commonly reported arthropod-associated illness in the U.S., is a multi-system tick-borne illness caused by the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi. In the eastern U.S. the agent is transmitted by the blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapuiaris, and primarily maintained in nature by rodent reservoirs. Although the majority of human cases has been concentrated in the northeastern U.S., hundreds have also been reported in southern states. Some of these cases represent exposures that occurred elsewhere in the country. However, many were from endemic exposures, from which numerous indigenous cases have been confirmed in the Southeast. Putative B. burgdorferi …

Regulation Of Cardiomyocyte Cell Death In Culture, Deanna Lund Jan 2002

Regulation Of Cardiomyocyte Cell Death In Culture, Deanna Lund

All Volumes (2001-2008)

Heart failure is the inability of body's cardiac output to keep pace with its demand for supplies and waste removal. It is characterized by systolic and diastolic ventricular dysfunction, cardiac remodeling, myocyte loss and fibrosis (Nyquist-Battie et al, 1996). It is accompanied by an increase in sympathetic activity with measurable increases in circulating plasma norepinephrine levels (Hasegawa et al. 2001; Kaye et al., 1995). Previous studies have suggested that adrenergic agonists play a role in myocardial cell death. Mann et al. (1992) have shown that increased activation of the adrenergic signaling pathway causes necrotic as well as apoptotic death in …

Anticipatory Mourning In Caregivers With Children Who Die In The Hospital, Annie Rini

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The death of a child has tremendous impact on a caregiver. Even when prognosis is poor and death appears imminent, care of the dying child typically focuses on achieving cure. Consequently, caregivers are often ill prepared to cope with the grief they experience as their child is dying. Anticipatory mourning allows caregivers time to begin grief work prior to the death of a loved one. Literature suggests that those who experience anticipatory mourning have a less complicated bereavement period. The purpose of this qualitative study is to (a) describe the presence (or absence) and role of anticipatory mourning in caregivers …
