Hip abduction orthosis devices (HAOD) are used to reduce the hip joint of infants affected by developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). HAOD have been successful for mild cases of DDH and ineffective for severe cases. Efforts in understanding the biomechanics of lower limbs have been made to improve the success rate of current treatment methods, especially for Grade IV dislocations (G4). The aim of this dissertation is twofold: first, it proposes the use of a varying fulcrum point (FP) located below the leg to improve DDH treatment; and secondly, it defines the optimal FP (OP) location for a broad …

Single Cell Forensic Genomics - Dna Profiling Of Micromanipulated Single Spermatozoa, Haley Hardin Jan 2020

Single Cell Forensic Genomics - Dna Profiling Of Micromanipulated Single Spermatozoa, Haley Hardin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-

Current U.S. National guidelines allow for the collection of sexual assault evidence up to 5 days after the incidence occurs. In these cases, the ability to obtain an autosomal STR (aSTR) profile of the male donor in these cases diminishes as the time interval increases. This inability to recover an aSTR profile from the semen donor is not due to a complete lack of sperm cells, as studies have frequently shown that sperm persists in the vaginal canal or cervix up to 10 days post coitus. Thus, the inability to recover an aSTR profile of the sperm donor is likely …

Nurse-Physician Collaboration During Bedside Rounding: What Is The Impact On The Nurse?, Martha Decesere Jan 2020

Nurse-Physician Collaboration During Bedside Rounding: What Is The Impact On The Nurse?, Martha Decesere

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-

Poor communication is identified as the root cause for the majority of sentinel events in hospitals, including wrong site surgery, medication errors, and failure to rescue. Interdisciplinary rounding (IDR), a long-standing practice in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), provides a forum for communication and collaboration and has been linked to improved patient outcomes. Most of the research regarding IDR has been performed in the ICU setting within academic medical centers. IDR outside of the ICU has demonstrated similar clinical outcomes but a gap exists in the literature regarding the impact of IDR participation on the nurse, particularly for nurses working …

Early Host Defense Mechanisms Against La Crosse Virus Infection, Maria A. Cruz Zamora Jan 2020

Early Host Defense Mechanisms Against La Crosse Virus Infection, Maria A. Cruz Zamora

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-

Given the importance of innate defense mechanisms in the skin, we have examined the interactions of the arbovirus La Crosse virus (LACV) with serum factors that serve as a first line of antiviral defense, and the outcome of LACV infection of human keratinocytes, one of the main cell types present at viral entry. Incubation of LACV derived from insect cells (I-LACV) with normal human serum in vitro did not result in neutralization, but instead stabilized LACV virions and enhanced infectivity. Enhanced infectivity was also seen with heat inactivated serum devoid of complement activity and with serum from a range of …

The Impact Of Virtual Reality On Chronic Pain, Alexis Whitehead Jan 2020

The Impact Of Virtual Reality On Chronic Pain, Alexis Whitehead

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Chronic pain remains a prevalent problem across the United States. Chronic pain does not seem to have a function and relief of this symptom remains elusive for many sufferers. Virtual reality has been used as an adjunct therapy to decrease acute pain with promising results, but there is little research on whether virtual reality could be used as a successful intervention for those with chronic pain. Virtual reality has few side effects, so it warrants consideration for the treatment of chronic pain. There is growing evidence that there is potential for virtual reality to produce desired results with patients having …

The Relationship Between Parent And Child Health Behaviors In Youth With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Elise M. Arnold Jan 2020

The Relationship Between Parent And Child Health Behaviors In Youth With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Elise M. Arnold

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Previous studies found that children with ASD tend to participate in lower amounts of physical activity (PA), accumulate greater hours of screen time (ST), and have poorer sleep quality (SQ), compared to typically developing (TD) youth. Unfortunately, these poor health behaviors put youth with ASD at a high risk for developing obesity, as well as other obesity-related conditions (e.g. Type 2 diabetes). In order to reduce this risk, it is critical to understand the factors that affect activity levels and sleep in youth with ASD. Several studies have demonstrated that parents may have a large influence on social behaviors in …

Novel Roles Of Rip2 In Inflammation And Resolution, Michael Shehat Jan 2020

Novel Roles Of Rip2 In Inflammation And Resolution, Michael Shehat

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-

Receptor-interacting protein 2 (RIP2) is a kinase which mediates signaling downstream of the bacterial peptidoglycan sensors Nucleotide-binding Oligomerization Domain (NOD) 1 and 2. Genetic loss or pharmaceutical inhibition of RIP2 has been shown to be beneficial in multiple inflammatory disease models with the effects largely attributed to reducing pro-inflammatory signaling downstream of peptidoglycan recognition. However, given the widespread expression of this kinase and its reported interactions with numerous other proteins, it is possible that RIP2 has many other unappreciated roles. In this work, we report the involvement of RIP2 in two novel pathways. First, we demonstrate a NOD2 dependent role …
