Lipid Peroxidation In Neoplastic Tissue Of Dogs With Mammary Cancer Fed With Different Kinds Of Diet, Maria Karayannopoulou, Anna Fytianou, Nikolaos Assaloumidis, Dimitra Psalla, Ioannis Savvas, Eleni Kaldrymidou

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Increased lipid peroxidation due to reactive oxygen species (ROS)-induced oxidative stress has been demonstrated in the neoplastic mammary tissue of dogs with malignant mammary tumors. Dietary factors implicated in ROS production may influence mammary cancer incidence or prognosis. Balanced diets (as commercial dog food is considered) may be more protective against oxidative damage than homemade diets. The purpose of this preliminary study was to compare the extent of lipid peroxidation, as evidenced by thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) and \alpha-tocopherol concentration in the neoplastic mammary tissue, among dogs with mammary cancer fed with different kinds of diet (commercial or homemade). Eighteen …

Effect Of Corpus Luteum: Quality And Recovery Rate Of Buffalo (Bubalus Bubalis) Oocytes, Lakshman Sahoo, Suresh K. Singla

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Recovery rate and quality of oocytes were investigated from abattoir collected ovaries with and without corpora lutea (CL). The oocytes were categorized into four grades: grade-A, grade-B, grade-C, and grade-D based on the presence of the cumulus cells complex around the oocytes. The number of oocytes per ovary were 1.7 ±0.1 and 1.5 ±0.1, obtained from ovaries without CL and with CL, respectively. Recovery rate of different grades of oocytes from ovaries with CL and without CL were almost identical.

The In Vitro Determination Of Genotoxicity In Peripheral Lymphocytes Of Welders Exposed To Fumes From Metal Arc Welding, Ceylan Şener, Hali̇l Erhan Eroğlu

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Gas metal arc welding is a widely used method in many industrial areas. In this study, the peripheral blood lymphocytes of 23 welders and 25 nonexposed subjects were monitored for genotoxicity. Materials and methods: The blood samples obtained from the subjects were incubated with a culture medium at 37 °C for 72 h. Cytochalasin-B and BrdU were added for micronucleus and replication index. After incubation, the cultures were harvested, stained, and examined. Results: The micronucleus rate (2.165 ± 1.645) of the welders was quite higher than that of those not exposed (1.352 ± 0.978) (P < 0.01). There was a significant difference between micronucleus rates of smoking and nonsmoking subjects. It was found that as the time of exposure to welding fumes increased, so did the micronucleus rates (2.938 ± 1.723) (P < 0.05). A positive correlation was observed between micronucleus frequency and age. The replication index rate (1.026 ± 0.020) of the welders was higher than that of those not exposed (1.019 ± 0.016) (P = 0.01). Conclusion: It is advised that welders who work with gas metal arc welding be instructed and that necessary protective measures be taken because of the risk caused by metal arc welding fumes.

General Reproductive Properties In Pigs, İrfan Tur

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Pig breeding is usually undertaken for fat and meat production, but different sectors (cosmetics industry, pharmaceutical industry, medical sector, etc.) can also use pigs for alternate purposes. Pork is evaluated based on the status of an amended law regarding butchers' meat in Turkey. There have been 25 pig farms registered in Turkey since 7 July 2006 in the framework of compliance with the European Union. On average, a sow has 2.3 farrowings per year, producing 9.5 to 12.5 piglets per litter. It is important that high proportions of selected replacement gilts reach puberty at an early age in order to …

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of 2 different transport temperatures on the in vitro maturation of oocytes collected from frozen-thawed sheep ovaries. Sheep ovaries were transferred into saline at temperatures of 4 °C and 32 °C. After the 2 experimental groups (A: fresh cortex, B: frozen-thawed cortex) were formed, each group was divided into 2 subgroups (group A1: 4 °C, group A2: 32 °C [control]; group B1: 4 °C, group B2: 32 °C). The cortexes were dissected into slices 1-3 mm thick and pieces of 0.5 cm2. For groups B1 and B2, 1-2 cortex pieces …
