Differences In Lean And Obese Skeletal Muscle Myoblasts Of Adult And Post-Natal La/N (Faf) Rats: A Confocal Description Of The Skeletal Muscle Myoblast, J. Adam Noah Jan 1998

Differences In Lean And Obese Skeletal Muscle Myoblasts Of Adult And Post-Natal La/N (Faf) Rats: A Confocal Description Of The Skeletal Muscle Myoblast, J. Adam Noah

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Mutant strains of obese rats are currently being studied to reveal the mechanisms of increased lipid synthesis and decreased lipid oxidation in these rats. It was originally thought that much of the fat production that leads to obesity is the result of metabolic processes in the liver and adipose tissue. Studies by Kahle et al.3 showed that the liver and adipose tissue account for only 22% and 7% respectively, of total fatty acid synthesis. It was also shown that 21 % of total de novo fatty acid was localized in the postural skeletal muscle.

The Effect Of Tape And Neoprene Ankle Supports On Balance In Athletes With Injured Ankles, Tara Michelle Gerlach Jan 1998

The Effect Of Tape And Neoprene Ankle Supports On Balance In Athletes With Injured Ankles, Tara Michelle Gerlach

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Injuries to the ankle joint are among the most common in athletics (Feuerbach et al., 1994; Gross, 1987). As clinicians, it is important to investigate various factors which could potentially reduce the occurrence of ankle injuries. One such actors is an improvement in proprioception (Cox et al., 1993; Glencross & Thornton, 1994). A suggested method for improving proprioception in the ankle is application of an external support, such as tape or a brace (Feuerbach et al. , 1994; Karlsson & Andreasson, 1992 ) . This study compared the proprioceptive abilities of the ankle under three conditions: unsupported, taped, and using …

Progestin Stimulation Of The Protooncogene C-̲M̲Y̲C In T47d Human Breast Cancer Cells, Kristy Ann Blankenship Jan 1998

Progestin Stimulation Of The Protooncogene C-̲M̲Y̲C In T47d Human Breast Cancer Cells, Kristy Ann Blankenship

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Moore and co-workers have previously demonstrated that progestins stimulate the growth of T47D human breast cancer cells. We now investigate the possibility that progestins might transactivate the protooncogcne c-myc as part of the mechanism for growth stimulation. Treatment of T47D cells with the synthetic progestin R5020 results in a rapid, dose-dependent increase in c-myc mRNA. This stimulation is evident as early as 5 minutes, increases up to 4-fold at 1 hour, and then returns toward basal levels. The optimal concentration of R5020 for induction of c-myc gene expression is 10 nM, which is within the physiologically relevant range of hormone …

Characterization Of The Promoter And Upstream Activation Sequences Of Sporulation-Specific Genes Spr1 (Ssg1) And Spr2 In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Sharmini S. Soosaithasan Jan 1998

Characterization Of The Promoter And Upstream Activation Sequences Of Sporulation-Specific Genes Spr1 (Ssg1) And Spr2 In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Sharmini S. Soosaithasan

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Sporulation is a developmental process in which temporally distinct sets of genes regulate the processes of meiosis and ascospore formation. Sporulation-specific genes are classified into early, middle, and late genes based on their peak time of expression during sporulation. Regulation of two late genes, SPR1 and SPR2, was studied. The function of SPR2 is unknown. Its regulatory region contains two Mid Sporulation Elements (MSE) repeated in tandem that are sufficient to confer sporulation-specific regulation to a CYCl-lacZ reporter. These sequences have UAS (upstream activation sequence) properties, as each 14 base pair element is sufficient to confer sporulation-specific regulation …

Adolescent Depression: The Influence Of Self-Esteem, Self-Consciousness And Gender, Kevin W. Adams Jan 1998

Adolescent Depression: The Influence Of Self-Esteem, Self-Consciousness And Gender, Kevin W. Adams

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This study explored gender differences in reports of depressive symptoms among adolescents. Self-esteem was examined for its relationship to reports of depressive symptoms and self-consciousness was examined to determine its influence on self-esteem and depression. One hundred four 10th grade students were involved in the study. The Beck Depression Inventory-II, the Imaginary Audience Scale, and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Inventory were used in the analysis. A hierarchical multiple regression analysis was used to analyze the data. Alpha was set at .05. A positive relationship was found between gender and the variables of depression, abiding self-consciousness, transient self-consciousness, and self-esteem. Females scored …
