Anti-Tumor Mechanisms Of Hpv16 E6*, Whitney S. Evans Dec 2016

Anti-Tumor Mechanisms Of Hpv16 E6*, Whitney S. Evans

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

High-risk types of the human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) are the causative agents of nearly all cases of cervical cancer, as well as a significant number of head, neck, penile, vulvar and anal cancers. Like many other viruses with small genomes, HPV (~8 kb) utilizes numerous mechanisms to increase the capacity of its genome to encode the proteins necessary for successful completion of its infectious life cycle, including alternative splicing. Studies over the past few decades have focused intensively on the activities and roles of E6 proteins from HR-HPVs during the process of cellular transformation, clearly implicating E6 as a major transforming …

Neuroprotective Molecules And Strategies In A Rat Model Of Neonatal Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy, Brandon Joseph Dixon

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Neonatal hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is a devastating disease that primarily causes neuronal and white matter injury and is among the leading cause of death among infants. Currently there are no well-established treatments; thus, it is important to understand the pathophysiology of the disease and elucidate complications that are creating a gap between basic science and clinical translation. In the development of neuroprotective strategies and translation of experimental results in HIE, there are many limitations and challenges to master based on an appropriate study design, drug delivery properties, dosage, and use in neonates. Since there are no established therapies for …

Synthesis Of Huacat® Analogues As Novel Organocatalysts For The Formation Of Asymmetric C-C Bonds, Kenneth Laboy Sep 2016

Synthesis Of Huacat® Analogues As Novel Organocatalysts For The Formation Of Asymmetric C-C Bonds, Kenneth Laboy

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The synthesis of organic compounds with preferential stereochemistry is ubiquitous in the scientific community. A chemical reaction that asymmetrically induces one stereoisomer over another is achieved through the use of catalysts and various coupling reagents.1 Inorganic catalysts, such as TiCl4 and ZnCl2, have been documented for many decades as effective agents in the synthesis of asymmetric bonds, however, there are environmental limitations to their use. First, the asymmetric reactions involving these metal catalysts require solvents that are not environmentally-friendly, especially when used on an industrial scale and second, the metal catalysts are recycled when possible, however, there is always metal …

Relational Engagement And Empowerment: Establishing A Foundation To Address Gender And Power, Sarah K. Samman Sep 2016

Relational Engagement And Empowerment: Establishing A Foundation To Address Gender And Power, Sarah K. Samman

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Feminist informed therapists view relational distress as a complex reflection of the influences of larger disempowering discourses resulting in gendered power inequalities in heterosexual couple relationships. These disempowering discourses often manifest in males’ socialization to maintain autonomy compared to females’ socialization to orient toward the needs of others (Silverstein, Bass, Tuttle, Knudson-Martin, & Huenergardt, 2006). The general purpose of this study was to bridge the gap between feminist informed theory and practice using the Socio-Emotional Relationship Therapy (SERT; Knudson-Martin & Huenergardt, 2010) Model to relieve relational distress in heterosexual intimate partners often caused by these competing discourses toward a relational …

Comparison Of Two Methods Of Transpalatal Arch And Lingual Arch Activation, Taoran Zhang Sep 2016

Comparison Of Two Methods Of Transpalatal Arch And Lingual Arch Activation, Taoran Zhang

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The TPA and LA can be activated with two methods: the “shape-driven method” where the appliance is made to match the final tooth position and the “force-driven method” where the appliance is made to make sure the force system delivered by it at the beginning is consistent with the planned tooth movement. This study compared the two methods in vitro quantitatively with typodont teeth and multi-axis force torque transducers in all three dimensions. Results: In the TPA first order activation, with comparable Fy (force on Y axis) reading, the shape-driven activation group had a significantly higher Mx (moment on X …

Neuropsychological Effects Of Pomegranate Supplementation Following Ischemic Stroke, John A. Bellone Sep 2016

Neuropsychological Effects Of Pomegranate Supplementation Following Ischemic Stroke, John A. Bellone

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Polyphenols are compounds found in fruits and vegetables that have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Mounting evidence suggests that dietary polyphenol intake can reduce the detrimental effects of various disease processes, and pomegranates have frequently been examined because of their particularly high polyphenol content. Since stroke induces both oxidative stress and inflammation and is currently the leading cause of long-term disability in the U.S., we sought to determine whether dietary supplementation with polyphenols could enhance cognitive recovery in individuals who had suffered an ischemic stroke. We administered polyphenols via 2 POMx pills containing polyphenols derived from pomegranates equivalent to the content …

A Tele-Coaching Intervention To Support Families In The Npp+: An Experimental Mixed Method Design, Wendella Wray Sep 2016

A Tele-Coaching Intervention To Support Families In The Npp+: An Experimental Mixed Method Design, Wendella Wray

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Poverty is the single greatest threat to a child’s well-being. Poverty has been shown to exacerbate child maltreatment (CM) and minimize nurturing parenting. CM is a leading cause of death among children under the age of five in the United States. Both poverty and CM are major public health concerns worldwide with important implications for the family. For over three decades great focus has been placed on developing evidence-based (EB) parenting and family interventions to promote the well-being of high-risk families. Using a conceptual framework guided by elements of the social cognitive theory, attachment theory and family systems theory, this …

The Effect Of Orthodontic Treatment On Sagittal Root Position Of The Maxillary Central Incisor, Jeremy Haines Sep 2016

The Effect Of Orthodontic Treatment On Sagittal Root Position Of The Maxillary Central Incisor, Jeremy Haines

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Introduction: Sagittal root position (SRP) of maxillary incisors is an important factor in implant treatment planning. Kan et al defined four classes of SRP in an effort to aid implant placement treatment planning and these SRP classifications represent a novel approach to describing bone changes around the maxillary incisors. The effect of orthodontic tooth movement, specifically changes in inclination, on SRP is of interest in potentially facilitating immediate implant placement. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to use Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) to evaluate the adaptation of alveolar bone around the maxillary incisors as a result of orthodontic …

Proteomic Profiling Of Serum Derived Exosomes From Prostate Cancer Patients, David Turay Jun 2016

Proteomic Profiling Of Serum Derived Exosomes From Prostate Cancer Patients, David Turay

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Touted among the major achievements in the diagnosis and management of Prostate cancer (PCa) in the past few decades has been, the dramatic decline of men with advanced/metastatic PCa at diagnosis coupled with a significant improvement ( >90%) in the five and ten year survival rates of the disease. Non-palpable PCa (potentially clinically treatable disease) now accounts for 70-80% of all newly diagnosed cases of PCa. Preceding these changes by about a decade was the introduction of Prostatic Specific Antigen (PSA) into clinical practice; first as biomarker for monitoring response to therapy and subsequently as a complementary screening tool. It …

Intimate Partner Violence In A Conservative Christian Denomination: Prevalence And Risk Factors, Carolyn Sallion-Love Jun 2016

Intimate Partner Violence In A Conservative Christian Denomination: Prevalence And Risk Factors, Carolyn Sallion-Love

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This study examines the prevalence and risk factors of intimate partner violence (IPV) in a Christian denomination. To date, no studies have been found in the literature that looked at IPV in a Christian denomination in South America, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Little is known regarding how church members from these countries experience victimization from IPV. One 2002 Inter-American Division (IAD) data set provides some insight into IPV; and the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church has analyzed cross-sectional data of more than 7,000 SDA respondents from the study area of interest. Discriminant function analysis (DFA) was used to determine if …

The Role Of Collagen Interacting Proteins In The Pathogenesis Of Filifactor Alocis, Ozioma Salomey Chioma Jun 2016

The Role Of Collagen Interacting Proteins In The Pathogenesis Of Filifactor Alocis, Ozioma Salomey Chioma

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Filifactor alocis is a Gram-positive, asaccharolytic; obligate anaerobe that has emerged as a potential periodontal pathogen due to its presence in high numbers in patients who have periodontal disease and least detection in healthy individuals (Kumar et al., 2003, Kumar et al., 2006, Wade, 2011). There is compelling evidence in the literature that demonstrates that F. alocis has virulence properties that may play an important role in infection-induced periodontitis (Abusleme et al., 2013, Griffen et al., 2012, Hutter et al., 2003, Khader et al., 2006, Siqueira and Rocas, 2003, Siqueira et al., 2009). However, there is a gap in our …
