Epidemic Conditions With Temporary Link Deactivation On A Network Sir Disease Model, Hannah Scanlon, John Gemmer Oct 2021

Epidemic Conditions With Temporary Link Deactivation On A Network Sir Disease Model, Hannah Scanlon, John Gemmer

Spora: A Journal of Biomathematics

The spread of an infectious disease depends on intrinsic properties of the disease as well as the connectivity and actions of the population. This study investigates the dynamics of an SIR type model which accounts for human tendency to avoid infection while also maintaining preexisting, interpersonal relationships. Specifically, we use a network model in which individuals probabilistically deactivate connections to infected individuals and later reconnect to the same individuals upon recovery. To analyze this network model, a mean field approximation consisting of a system of fourteen ordinary differential equations for the number of nodes and edges is developed. This system …

Strategies To Implement Multicultural Education In Communication Sciences And Disorders, Janet L. Bradshaw, Crystal C. Randolph Oct 2021

Strategies To Implement Multicultural Education In Communication Sciences And Disorders, Janet L. Bradshaw, Crystal C. Randolph

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

Multicultural education is a foundational imperative for the field of communication sciences and disorders (CSD). The increasing cultural diversity of the United States’ population, which includes cultural groups based on race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic class, implores effective implementation of multicultural education in CSD. Multicultural education can be defined as a dynamic, multifaceted process that seeks to increase cross-cultural understanding in culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) groups (See Sleeter, 1996; Ozturgut, 2011). Minimal training in multiculturalism paired with a limited awareness for cultural humility compounds the ability of educators and students to implement effective teaching, learning, and clinical …

Building A Pipeline Of Bilingual Slps To Serve Dual Language Learners: An Inclusive Model Of Interprofessional Education, Sonja Pruitt-Lord, Alicia Escobedo, Jennica Paz, Carol Robinson-Zañartu Oct 2021

Building A Pipeline Of Bilingual Slps To Serve Dual Language Learners: An Inclusive Model Of Interprofessional Education, Sonja Pruitt-Lord, Alicia Escobedo, Jennica Paz, Carol Robinson-Zañartu

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

Speech-language pathology graduate programs do not reflect equity across racial and ethnic groups. Training programs must adopt an anti-racist stance and intentionally and strategically plan for equity and inclusion of students and professionals who are Black, Indigenous and Persons of Color (BIPOC). Retention of minoritized students must be supported by inclusion efforts. The authors review systems of support essential to the recruitment and retention of BIPOC students in graduate programs. Through funding support from a grant, the authors developed a model of training bilingual SLP students to work with dual language learners through an inclusive model of interprofessional education. Finally, …

Pragmatic Humanism In Csd Diversity Education: A Conceptual Framework To Engage Students Across The Political And Cultural Spectrum, Tobias A. Kroll, Ana Honnacker, Christopher Townsend

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

The purpose of this reflection on scholarly teaching is to outline the difficulties arising when critical race theory, in its misappropriated and popularized form that dominates current discourse, is deployed as the sole educational framework in CSD education. We wish to offer an alternative framework, pragmatic humanism. The latter is expounded as a paradigm that can reap the benefits of critical race theory without succumbing to the absolutist claims of its popularized variant. It will be argued that pragmatic humanism is a useful framework for diversity teachers in CSD who are faced with an overwhelmingly White, conservative student body that …

The Creation Of A Multicultural Foundational Course: From Research To Practice, Audrey M. Farrugia Oct 2021

The Creation Of A Multicultural Foundational Course: From Research To Practice, Audrey M. Farrugia

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

The American Speech Language Hearing Association requires that multicultural content be included in graduate communication and sciences disorders programs. However, there is a paucity of research on the ways that this is achieved. The purpose of this paper is to describe in detail a multicultural course created from best practices gathered from research literature, conference presentations, and syllabi sources in communication sciences and disorders and share student reflections of the created course. Student feedback from this study shows that foundational courses can improve cultural competency but careful consideration of discussion format and time dedicated to communities should take place.

Applying Concepts Of Cultural Humility In Csd Education, Sarah M. Ginsberg, Bernadette Mayfield-Clarke Oct 2021

Applying Concepts Of Cultural Humility In Csd Education, Sarah M. Ginsberg, Bernadette Mayfield-Clarke

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

Cultural humility represents a set of concepts that extend the core notion of cultural competence required for licensed professionals in audiology and speech-language pathology (ASHA, n.d.). A cultural humility mindset includes self-evaluation, addressing power imbalances, and fostering productive partnerships (Tervalon & Murray-Garcia, 1998). This paper examines each of these aspects of cultural humility and discusses possible ways to apply them in communicative sciences and disorders education.

A Method Paper For The External Auditory Canal Anthropometrics Study, Clara Marchini, Antony Joseph

AuD Capstone Projects - Communication Sciences and Disorders

The anthropometrics of the external auditory canal (EAC) is clinically pertinent to producing effective custom hearing protection devices (HPD). If custom HPDs are incorrectly fit, they will not attenuate an appropriate level of sound, increasing the likelihood that the user might be exposed to hazardous intensity levels. Researchers have attempted to measure the EAC using a multitude of approaches. Research technology, called ear scanning, appears to provide the ability to measure the EAC effectively. This study was designed to identify a procedure to accomplish the following: (1) characterize the anthropometric differences between male and female external ears. (2) identify differences …

Mathematical Modeling, Analysis, And Simulation Of The Covid-19 Pandemic With Behavioral Patterns And Group Mixing, Comfort Ohajunwa, Padmanabhan Seshaiyer

Spora: A Journal of Biomathematics

Due to the rise of COVID-19 cases, many mathematical models have been developed to study the disease dynamics of the virus. However, despite its role in the spread of COVID-19, many SEIR models neglect to account for human behavior. In this project, we develop a novel mathematical modeling framework for studying the impact of mixing patterns and social behavior on the spread of COVID-19. Specifically, we consider two groups, one exhibiting normal behavior who do not reduce their contacts and another exhibiting altered behavior who reduce their contacts by practicing non-pharmaceutical interventions such as social distancing and self-isolation. The dynamics …
