Interprofessional practice (IPP), collaboration of professionals from different backgrounds working together to provide services, is of growing importance in speech-language pathology and across other disciplines in the vast health field (WHO, 2010). The American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA) stresses the importance of communicating roles and responsibilities of health professionals to provide the best quality care for patients (Dixon & Oandasan, 2015). In order to understand the roles and responsibilities across disciplines, health care professionals and students need to be provided with the necessary education. TG/TS individuals often face discrimination when seeking health care services such as provider judgment. Further, TG/TS individuals may be unaware of culturally competent service providers or the range of services that exist to aid them in their transition. Through extensive review of the literature, these issues will be highlighted in the coming pages to help future clients and clinicians gain the information necessary to obtain and provide effective interventions, respectively.

Within the scope of practice of speech-language pathology, the goal of intervention for patients with TBI is to achieve the highest level of independent function possible to facilitate participation in daily living. Treatment is always individualized for individuals with TBI based on the specific characteristics present. It is best to provide treatment in the language(s) used by the individual as well as incorporate and consider the cultural values and norms of the individual. There are several treatment options available for patients with TBI, which include identifying the best service delivery model appropriate for their lifestyle (ASHA, 2016).

Abstract

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a pain toolkit to improve pain management.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization and Joint Commission state effective pain management is a basic human right.

METHODS: Patients’ ratings of pain management on a 25-bed orthopedic/neurology unit three months before and after implementation of a toolkit were compared. The toolkit included bedside report, care board, purposeful hourly rounding, pain algorithm, pain status indicator, and complex pain interventions. Purpose: The purpose of this project is to evaluate a practice change of implementing peri-operative amiodarone infusion for cardiac surgical patients at a large northern Illinois hospital to reduce the incidence of post-operative atrial fibrillation. Evidence supports use of prophylactic amiodarone as a strategy to reduce its incidence. The sequelae of untreated post-op atrial fibrillation include increased risk of embolic stroke, extended hospitalization, and increased healthcare costs.

Context: Asymmetrical loading between lower limbs can theoretically be explained as an inequality of strength, neuromuscular control, or subconscious reliance on one leg more than the other. Asymmetries are often identified utilizing costly equipment such as force plates and 3D motion analysis cameras. It is important to establish less costly ways of identifying movement and loading asymmetries for clinicians to utilize. HIV/AIDS remains a threat to Kenya and other developing nations. This thesis aimed at assessing the HIV/AIDS situation in Kenya by examining the knowledge of Kenyans towards infection and spread HIV/AIDS, attitudes towards people living with HIV/AIDS, involvement of community opinion leaders in the HIV/AIDS campaigns, sharing of HIV/AIDS information, and government efforts to control HIV/AIDS. A sample of Kenyans (N= 103) was surveyed and asked to respond to several scales assessing each of the above items. The manipulation of exercise volume, intensity, and order is associated with producing different musculoskeletal changes. These resistance training program variables affect mechanical tension and metabolic stress associated with resistance training, therefore affecting strength and hypertrophic outcomes. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of two different volume-equated total body exercise protocols over 9 weeks using compound exercises on muscular strength, muscle thickness, and fat-free mass.
