Objective: This manuscript summarizes the best available scholarly evidence related to anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) as a reference for health care professionals, including athletic trainers, educators, and interested others.
Background: Health care professionals associated with sports or exercise should understand and be prepared to educate others about AAS. These synthetic, testosteronebased derivatives are widely abused by athletes and nonathletes to gain athletic performance advantages, develop their physiques, and improve their body image. Although AAS can be ergogenic, their abuse may lead to numerous negative health effects.
Recommendations: Abusers of AAS often rely on questionable information sources. Sports medicine professionals can therefore …

Males may experience several barriers to seeking health care, including unfamiliarity with procedures (e.g. colonoscopy), stigma and fear of a given health issue, perceived breach of masculinity (machismo), and fear of feeling vulnerable. Evidence suggests church-based interventions are an effective way to strengthen the connection between promotional message content and participant conceptualization of the risks and benefits of health screenings. However, there is a lack of evidence demonstrating such effectiveness in men’s health, and there is even more of a dearth of research focusing on Latinos. This discussion presents trends from a series of 4 community-based seminars during the 2010-2011 …

Visual and visuospatial dysfunction is prevalent in Parkinson’s disease (PD). To promote assessment of these often overlooked symptoms, we adapted the PD Vision Questionnaire for Internet administration. The questionnaire evaluates visual and visuospatial symptoms, impairments in activities of daily living (ADLs), and motor symptoms. PD participants of mild to moderate motor severity (n = 24) and healthy control participants (HC, n = 23) completed the questionnaire in paper and web-based formats. Reliability was assessed by comparing responses across formats. Construct validity was evaluated by reference to performance on measures of vision, visuospatial cognition, ADLs, and motor symptoms. The web-based …

Deficits On The Clock Drawing Test In Parkinson’S Disease, Ashley Rober
Undergraduate Review
Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects 1% of the world population over the age of 65—anywhere from four to six million people (National Parkinson Foundation, 2010). Although most people identify PD as a movement disorder, cognitive deficits are also present. Poor performance on tasks such as set shifting, internal control of attention, and sequencing is commonly reported by PD patients (Stout & Johnson, 2005), as are visual and verbal memory impairments (Moody, Bookheimer, Vanek, & Knowlton, 2004). Visuospatial skills are also problematic, including depth perception, spatial orientation, and spatial organization (Bowen, Burns, Brady, & Yahr, 1972).
Tobacco—The Lesser Evil, Samantha Graham
Tobacco—The Lesser Evil, Samantha Graham

My mother has always referred to smoking cigarettes as “the lesser of the evils.” Hearing that statement from someone who has been in and out of drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs her whole life, I suppose you could sympathize with it. In fact, most rehabilitation centers dedicate certain times of the day just to allow their patients to smoke. Although my mother considers smoking not to be an “evil” worth sweating over, it will most likely ultimately result in her demise.
