In examinations of five data points between 1995 and 2018, the gap in the rates of substance use between Andrews University students and a general U.S. college population remained about the same each time period. However, both groups tended to increase or decrease use over the same time periods. Data from the March 2023 collection period will be included in the presentation and will be examined to see if cultural levelling has occurred or if Andrews …

Bullying Perpetrators And Victims And Associated Factors Among High School Learners In Tshwane District, South Africa, Kebogile Mokwena, Dudu Shiba

Adventist Human-Subject Researchers Association

The global increase in mental disorders includes a significant proportion of children and adolescents, and bullying in school is reported to be a contributory factor to mental disorders among children. Although bullying in Sub-Saharan Africa, including South Africa, is anecdotally acknowledged, this public health, developmental, and education challenge has mainly been limited to the rite of passage for children, and not much has been done to identify risk factors for bullying perpetrators and victims in a school environment. The purpose of the study was to screen learners in Tshwane District, Pretoria, for bullying behavior.

Synthesis Of 5-Membered Ring Heterocycles For Alzheimer’S Disease, Daniel Fajardo Mar 2021

Synthesis Of 5-Membered Ring Heterocycles For Alzheimer’S Disease, Daniel Fajardo

Honors Scholars & Undergraduate Research Poster Symposium Programs

The progression of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is correlated to the degenerative activation of muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (mAChR) located in the brain. They are a family of five G-protein coupled receptors, (M1-M5), linked to functions within the central and peripheral nervous system.1 More specifically, activation of M1 with positive allosteric modulators (PAM), have shown to bind to the allosteric pocket and slow the degenerative process of AD with minimal intrinsic effects.2 Structural motifs of potent PAM activity and weak agonism proposed a synthesis of an isooxazoline compound, incorporating a 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition. The core motif of the proposed isooxazoline structure has been …

Sexual Orientation, Substance Misuse, And Sexual Misconduct At A Conservative Christian University, Maci Chen Mar 2021

Sexual Orientation, Substance Misuse, And Sexual Misconduct At A Conservative Christian University, Maci Chen

Honors Scholars & Undergraduate Research Poster Symposium Programs

College students in general tend to have high rates of substance use and abuse. Sexual minority college students show high rates of substance use and abuse. These findings are consistent across studies of sexual minority students and their relation to substances. Sexual minority populations are also more at-risk for becoming victims of sexual harassment and assault. Minority stress theory hypothesizes that LGBTQ+students at Christian universities may face heightened stigmatization or alienation, perhaps because of Christian norms/beliefs supporting heterosexual orientation.

Honors Scholars & Undergraduate Research Poster Symposium Programs

Scutellaria barbata (SB) has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for treating liver, lung and rectal tumors. We previously found that aqueous extracts of SB inhibited mutagenesis, DNA binding, and metabolism of aflatoxin B1 and benzo(a)pyrene. They were also shown to inhibit foci formation in the colon of AOM-induced mice. Other research demonstrated that ethanol extracts inhibit colorectal cancer growth, inhibit proliferation and induce apoptosis. In this study, the effects of aqueous extracts of SB on the induction and modulation of apoptosis in HCT-116 colon cancer cells and CCD-841 normal colon epithelial cells were assessed using TUNEL assay, Apoptosis/Necrosis Detection …
