Updates On The Diagnosis And Management Of Hepatocellular Carcinoma, Aimun Raees, Muhammad Kamran, Hasan Özkan, Wasim Jafri

Introduction: Globally, the incidence, as well as mortality, related to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is on the rise, owing to relatively few curative options. Underlying cirrhosis is the most common etiology leading to HCC, but risk factors of cirrhosis show great regional variability. Over the years, there has been a steady development in the diagnostic and therapeutic modalities of HCC, including the availability of a wide range of systemic chemotherapeutic agents. We aim to review the recent advancements in the diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for HCC.
Methodology: The literature search was done using databases PubMed, Cochrane, and Science Direct, and the …

Rapid Development Of Hepatocellular Carcinoma After Eradication Of Hepatitis C Virus With Directly Acting Antiviral Treatment, Fakhar Ali Qazi Arisar, Saeed Hamid Sep 2018

Rapid Development Of Hepatocellular Carcinoma After Eradication Of Hepatitis C Virus With Directly Acting Antiviral Treatment, Fakhar Ali Qazi Arisar, Saeed Hamid

Section of Gastroenterology

Hepatitis C is a major risk factor for the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), arising typically on a background of liver cirrhosis. Treatment of hepatitis C has been revolutionized by the addition of oral direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) with sustained virological response (SVR) rates above 90%. There is a recent concern under debate about the increased risk of early HCC recurrence in patients with chronic hepatitis C who were treated with direct-acting antivirals. Nonetheless, these reports mostly focused on patients who were cirrhotic and were already treated for HCC. We report 4 cases of treatment naive, chronic hepatitis C patients who …

In our country, world hepatitis day (28th May 2013) was observed as a liver cancer day to draw global attention on the global health menace caused by Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). This is the right time to write a review article to apprise the nation of this growing burden of HCC caused most commonly by viruses in our country. Pakistan is also recognized as one of the countries of the world where hepatitis C virus (HCV) is endemic. Recent large national surveys suggest an overall HCV prevalence of 4.8% and that of HBV as 2.5%. There are however communities where the …

It is the most common chronic liver disease in USA and considered to be increasing in Asia Pacific region including South Asia however there is no community based study from Pakistan. Customarily NAFLD had been regarded as a benign disease; however clinical as well as epidemiological studies had contradicted this belief because approximately 20% …

Hepatocellular Carcinoma In Hepatitis D: Does It Differ From Hepatitis B Monoinfection?, Z Abbas, Qureshi M, Saeed Hamid, Wasim Jafri Feb 2012

Hepatocellular Carcinoma In Hepatitis D: Does It Differ From Hepatitis B Monoinfection?, Z Abbas, Qureshi M, Saeed Hamid, Wasim Jafri

Section of Gastroenterology

Background/Aim: Hepatitis D virus (HDV) superinfection in patients with chronic hepatitis B leads to accelerated liver injury, early cirrhosis, and decompensation. It may be speculated that hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) may differ in these patients from hepatitis B virus (HBV) monoinfection. The aim of this study was to compare clinical aspects of hepatocellular carcinoma in patients of hepatitis D with HBV monoinfection.

Patients and Methods: A total of 92 consecutive HCC cases seropositive for antibody against HDV antigen (HDV group) were compared with 92 HBsAg-positive and anti-HDV-negative cases (HBV group).

Results: The features including sex, body mass index, presence of ascites, …
