As occupational therapy education is becoming more mindful of disparities in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) within the classroom and clinical practice, adjustments in curricula need to be made to affect long term changes, especially considering the many connections to intersectionality and improved patient outcomes. This poster explores emerging best practices and important reflections when reviewing health curricula, with special attention paid to the “hidden curriculum” surrounding DEI within occupational therapy education programs. By critically and thoroughly reviewing intended, actual, hidden, and null curricula, a better understanding of program and didactic shortcomings can be compiled and assessed. Within our profession, we possess many tools for improving our patients’ and clients’ lives, which can be translated to mentorship of other OTPs by making it an intentional aspect of our career. Building upon our role competencies allows us to explore creative ways in which we can enrich our colleagues and students. By reviewing and identifying AOTA’s five “Standards for Continuing Competency” through the lens of being a mentor, confidence can be built based on what each OTP currently possesses. This presentation includes a review of “real life” case studies involving complicated workers compensation situations with discussion about client-centered approaches, utilization of job analysis and objective data to drive treatment, and emphasis on how OT’s can focus on function to achieve optimal outcomes, elicit effective communication with employers and advocate for the patient and their safety. *An evidence based review of how COVID-19 may impact workers attitudes and implications on how that could impact injury, has been added to conclude the presentation.
