Conducting a screening program is one thing, communicating the results to individuals is another altogether. We believe effective communication to to be the nexus of health decision-making. How you convey screening choices and results to parents, teachers, and children may have both positive and negative consequences to parental and teacher perceptions of the child's behavior, expectations of his/her future development, and the child's view of themselves. In this chapter, we address the challenges and necessity of informed consent, the importance of understanding the implications of false positive and false negative results, and the potential consequences of communcating screening results. Objectives: To compare the validity of existing nutrition screening tools for use in older South Africans. Design: A cross-sectional study in 283 free-living and institutionalized black South Africans aged 60+ years.Methods: Trained fieldworkers administered a 24-hour recall, the DETERMINE and Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) screening tools and performed anthropometrical measurements and physical function tests. Biochemical indicators assessed included serum albumin; haemoglobin, ferritin, vitamin B12, RBC folate, cholesterol and vitamin C. Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is characterised by fear of negative evaluation.1 Sufferers become anxious when they perceive themselves as the centre of attention, finding it difficult to speak in public, attend social events and deal with authority figures. It is common, with an annual prevalence of 2.7% in Australia, but elsewhere in the western world it is higher (3–4%) and has a lifetime incidence of 7–13%. It has significant impact on education and employment, with lower levels of educational achievement and lower incomes.There are several screening tests for social anxiety disorder. Objective
To investigate differences in demographics, strength and sensory system function of 254 women aged 40-80 years categorized as stable, unsteady or unstable using simple balance tests.
Method
Demographics (age, height, weight, medications, co-morbidities, falls history, activity level), measures of quadriceps, hip abductor and adductor strength, somatosensory, visual and vestibular function were recorded. Subjects were categorized as stable (completed all trials), unsteady (failed one/two trials) or unstable (failed all trials) after three 10-s trials of bilateral stance (foam surface, eyes closed (EC)) and one-leg stance (firm surface, eyes open (EO)), and the results were compared.
