Strategies For Salivary Cortisol Collection And Analysis In Research With Children, Kirsten Hanrahan, Ann Mccarthy, Charmaine Kleiber, S. Lutgendorf, E. Tsalikian Apr 2013

Strategies For Salivary Cortisol Collection And Analysis In Research With Children, Kirsten Hanrahan, Ann Mccarthy, Charmaine Kleiber, S. Lutgendorf, E. Tsalikian

Kirsten M. Hanrahan

Salivary cortisol has emerged in pediatric research as an easy-to-collect, relatively inexpensive, biologic marker of stress. Cortisol is highly variable and is responsive to a wide range of factors that should be considered when incorporating this measure into research with children. Strategies for sample collection include: (1) standardizing the time for sample collection, including baseline samples; (2) using consistent collection materials and methods; (3) controlling for certain drinks, foods, medications, and diagnoses; and (4) establishing procedures and protocols. Other strategies for laboratory analyses include: (1) selecting the appropriate assay and laboratory; (2) identifying units of measure and norms; and (3) …

Longing: The Lived Experience Of Spirituality In Adolescents With Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, S. Pehler, Martha Craft-Rosenberg

Martha J. Craft-Rosenberg

Although much has been written regarding ill adolescents, research has not described their spiritual response. The purpose of this descriptive phenomenological study was to describe the lived experiences of spirituality in adolescents with Duchenne muscular dystrophy using van Manen's phenomenological method. Findings from nine teens showed that the essential theme of spirituality was "longing," the strong desire for something unattainable. Consistent with Reed's (1992) paradigm for understanding spirituality, participants mediated their longing through "Connecting with others, self, and beyond self." These findings support the need for nursing to assess spirituality in teens and determine developmentally appropriate interventions to ameliorate longing.

Responding To Depression In Parents, Joanne Nicholson, Jonathan Clayfield Mar 2012

Responding To Depression In Parents, Joanne Nicholson, Jonathan Clayfield

Joanne Nicholson

Pediatric professionals may naturally view themselves as gatekeepers or facilitators of access to mental health services for children, but may not see themselves as the first line of "defense" for parents with mental health issues. However, about two thirds of women who meet criteria for affective disorders, and slightly more than half of the men who do, are parents. Given that the average age of onset for affective disorders is several years after the birth of first children, parental depression may initially come to the attention of pediatric providers, the most likely professionals with whom parents have contact prior to …

006–Investigation Of Nurses' Reports On Symptom Severity And Symptom Management For Hospitalized Obese Children In The Perioperative Period, Luanne Linnard-Palmer

Luanne Linnard-Palmer

Childhood obesity is a significantly growing epidemic affecting a wide range of members of the pediatric population. In 2003, the American Academy of Pediatrics revealed that up to 30% of the nation's pediatric population are overweight or obese and that there is a potential that another 30% of the population are at high risk of becoming obese (Weightawareness.com). In the United States in 1991, there were only four states in which obesity rates were greater than 15%; by 2001, only one state had an obesity rate below 15%. In fact, obesity rates are greater than 20% in most …

Parents’ Refusal Of Medical Treatment For Cultural Or Religious Beliefs: An Ethnographic Study Of Health Care Professionals’ Experiences, Luanne Linnard-Palmer, Susan Kools Dec 2004

Parents’ Refusal Of Medical Treatment For Cultural Or Religious Beliefs: An Ethnographic Study Of Health Care Professionals’ Experiences, Luanne Linnard-Palmer, Susan Kools

Luanne Linnard-Palmer

Pediatric nurses working in acute care settings serving religious and culturally diverse families may encounter parents whose beliefs influence treatment decisions. Previous literature describes how these complex situations lead to emotional distress and strained relationships between health care provider and family members. An ethnographic study was conducted to investigate the impact of parental treatment refusal on the bedside interactions between pediatric nurses and parents. Twenty in-depth interviews with nurses were conducted, and extensive field notes were taken during data collection. Emotional feelings associated with possible loss of guardianship and subsequent mandated treatment, the impact of the situation on the nurses’ …

Parents’ Refusal Of Medical Treatment Based On Religious And/Or Cultural Beliefs: The Law, Ethical Principles, And Clinical Implications, Luanne Linnard-Palmer, Susan Kools

Luanne Linnard-Palmer

When parents apply religious or cultural beliefs concerning spiritual healing, faith healing, or preference for prayer over traditional health care for children, concerns develop. Medical care is considered one of the most basic of all human needs, and yet parents may elect to apply religious or cultural beliefs in place of traditional Western medical care for their children. Because memberships in religious groups that have beliefs concerning prayer and health care for children are increasing, the topic is of great importance for pediatric health professionals. This article describes parental refusal of medical care, and it discusses the legal, ethical, and …
