Dr Nikki Milne

This study explored current physiotherapy practice trends for management of children who are overweight or obese. The professional needs of physiotherapists working with this population were also assessed, including the perceived need for physiotherapy clinical guidelines for prevention and management of children with obesity. A cross-sectional survey design was used, with questionnaires purposefully distributed through 13 key physiotherapy services throughout Australia. Snowball sampling resulted in completed questionnaires from 64 physiotherapists who provided services to children. Half (n = 33, 52%) of respondents provided services specifically to overweight or obese children. Of those providing services, one-quarter had prior training specific to …

Alison L Jones

Objectives—The European and American position statement on the use of activated charcoal recommends its administration within an hour of ingestion of a charcoal binding poison. But in reality, this time limit is difficult to follow for the majority of poisoned patients. This study aimed to examine the treatment of acutely poisoned patients with activated charcoal in an accident and emergency (A&E) department. Methods—63 patients who had taken potentially serious overdoses and required hospital admission from a London teaching hospital A&E department were identified over a six month period. The patients’ case notes were analysed for age, sex, substances taken, and …

Proposals For The Mitigation Of The Environmental Impact Of Clinical Laboratories, Joseph Lopez, Tony Badrick

Tony Badrick

Laboratories should be aware of the carbon footprint resulting from their activities and take steps to mitigate it as part of their societal responsibilities. Once committed to a mitigation programme, they should announce an environmental policy, secure the support of senior management, initiate documentation, institute a staff training programme, schedule environmental audits and appoint an environmental manager. Laboratories may aspire to be accredited to one of the standards for environmental management, such as the ISO 14000. As environmental and quality issues are linked, the improvement in the environmental management of an organisation will ultimately lead to improved quality system performance. …
