Research/Internship In Optometry, Alisha Trivedi
Research/Internship In Optometry, Alisha Trivedi
Trick to the Treat of Internships and Research
This is an enriching experience for undergraduate students, giving them a clinical and hands on experience in the field of Optometry. Students will have the opportunity to participate in research, see participants, shadow optometrists, engage in new studies, and possibly present their research at the end of their second semester. Students will work under a health professional at HPD and first observe their work along with the work of the interns before them to get familiar with the position. They will typically see participants for research about 2-3 times a week, and work on their term paper outside of that.

Trick to the Treat of Internships and Research
This program is a 10-week internship designed for undergraduates interested in the scientific field to engage in current research. Students have the option of requesting to work under three mentors, one of which they will be paired. Students will work in the lab with the principal investigator and other members of the lab. Along with working in the lab, students in the program will also attend bi-weekly talks/lectures from researchers, grad students, and professionals at TSRI as well as participating in two presentations and a final poster or oral presentation.

Sleep Quality, But Not Quantity, Is Associated With Reduced Abdominal Fat Accumulation During Pregnancy, Hannah G. Delia, Jabreia James
Sleep Quality, But Not Quantity, Is Associated With Reduced Abdominal Fat Accumulation During Pregnancy, Hannah G. Delia, Jabreia James
Symposium of Student Scholars
During pregnancy, women typically see a disruption in sleep and an abnormal amount of abdominal fat accumulation. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to determine if there is a relationship between sleep disturbance, quality or quantity and the accumulation of abdominal fat during pregnancy. METHODS: First-time pregnant women (N=25) were recruited from a local OB/GYN office. Participants (aged 27.2±4.5 years) visited the exercise physiology laboratory at KSU to obtain body composition measurements and sleep data between 17 and 21 weeks gestation. Overall sleep disturbance, quality, and quantity were assessed through a sleep disturbance survey. Six subjects failed the validity …

The Effects Of Chronic Partial Sleep Deprivation On Alcohol Consumption And Delta Fos B Accumulation, Kristian Ponder
Showcase of Graduate Student Scholarship and Creative Activities
The present study explores the relation between sleep restriction and alcohol use and the neural substrates that result from chronic behaviors, such as transcription factors. Transcription factor activity is suggested as a possible outcome of chronic behaviors, such as addiction. Sleep is discussed as possible mediating factor in the relationship between specific transcription factors and alcohol. Analysis will focus on brain areas related to both sleep and reward.

Babies who are born early are at risk for developing serious life-threatening conditions and developmental delays. Providing babies with breast milk, and helping them breast feed has been shown to reduce the chances of these conditions and delays. However, hospitals across the country have adopted wildly different practices when it comes to feeding these babies. By understanding the current practices in hospitals across the country, we can begin to understand how to affect change.

Exploring The Effects Of Dance As A Therapeutic Media To Assess Attunement In Co-Occupation Between Primary Caregiver And Infant, Kelly R. Frye, Natalie A. Perez
Showcase of Graduate Student Scholarship and Creative Activities
This presentation shares findings from a five-week intervention group designed to explore the effects of therapeutic dance-based activities on the parent-infant bond. Dance was chosen as a therapeutic activity because it promotes simultaneous involvement of both the parent and child in a shared co-occupation. Dance involves non-verbal communication and relies heavily on vision, touch, and trust, all of which are in an infants’ repertoire. In the occupational therapy literature, co-occupations are defined as activities in which two or more persons are simultaneously engaged in related experiences (Pickens, Pizur-Barnekow, 2009). Co-occupations involve shared meaning; they include dimensions of shared physicality, shared …

Showcase of Graduate Student Scholarship and Creative Activities
This presentation explores scholarly work at the intersection of mental health and the natural world in a variety of disciplines. My intent is to provide an overview of theoretical perspectives, research-based evidence, and clinical practices that support the idea that experiencing the natural world can improve human mental health outcomes.

Pollutants can change the behaviors of invertebrate stream animals. The level of one common pollutant, nitrate (NO3), has been rising in many local rivers and streams throughout the United States due to increases in anthropogenic sources. Nitrate, heavily regulated for its toxic effects to human health, namely the aiding in the development of cancer, also dangerously affects aquatic species by converting oxygen-carrying pigments to forms that are incapable of carrying oxygen. To understand the stress effects of ambient nitrate exposure on P. clarkii, we collected hemolymph samples from red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) over a 48-hour period after exposure to …

Pharmacy Research On Medication Disposal Practices Using Service-Learning, Patricia L. Darbishire, Anne Packard, Maryam Noureldin, Sumaya Bahrami
Engagement & Service-Learning Summit
Abstract
The purpose was to engage students in local communities to determine what types of medications commonly go unused, discover common medication disposal practices, gauge the public’s opinion on medication disposal, and collect unwanted medications.
Student pharmacists and a faculty mentor hosted 15 medication take-back events in conjunction with community partners, and administered a survey to participants exploring disposal practices, opinions and returned medication(s). Educational brochures on safe disposal methods were distributed to participants.
Four hundred and seventy-eight surveys were collected and 4,993 medications were identified and analyzed. The top three reasons for bringing medications to collection events included: medication …
Student And Community Perceptions On Reasons For Medication Non-Adherence, Patricia L. Darbishire, Daraoun Mashrah
Student And Community Perceptions On Reasons For Medication Non-Adherence, Patricia L. Darbishire, Daraoun Mashrah
Engagement & Service-Learning Summit
Abstract
The purpose of this research was to improve medication adherence by exploring and reflecting on differences in the perceptions of pharmacy students and the public regarding factors contributing to medication non-adherence.
Two hundred eighty six pharmacy students and 310 patients participated in this study. Patients were recruited by pharmacy students from Midwest community pharmacies, while the students completed an experiential rotation. Students identified their patients based on evidence of non-adherence from medication profiles and asked patients to participate in the assignment. Data was collected over a four-year period, resulting in two years of information on patient perceptions and two …
