Sport Specialization And Injury Risk In Naia Athletes, Connor Cavanaugh Apr 2022

Sport Specialization And Injury Risk In Naia Athletes, Connor Cavanaugh

Scholar Week 2016 - present

Sport specialization is defined as intense year-round training in a single sport while excluding other sports. Though some studies have supported a relationship between increased levels of sport specialization and injury risk, others have contradicted this. Previous literature has also suggested that sport specialization levels increase dramatically throughout high school, though this hypothesized increase and possible relationship between sport specialization and injury risk has not been investigated in post-high school athletes at the NAIA level. This study aimed to investigate the possible relationship between sport specialization and injury risk, as well as how sport specialization levels change throughout college. A …

Evaluation Of Resting Metabolic Rate Between Sex And Sport Type Of D3 Athletes., Alissa Anderson Apr 2022

Evaluation Of Resting Metabolic Rate Between Sex And Sport Type Of D3 Athletes., Alissa Anderson

Student Scholar Showcase

Introduction: Sex, muscle characaterstics, and training have been shown to affect resting metabolic rate (RMR) of elite level athletes. However, there is little known about the resting metabolic rates of non-elite Division 3 athletes.

Purpose: Therefore the purpose of this research study is to observe differences in resting metabolic rate among different types of various Division 3 athletic male and female teams.

Methods: University of Lynchburg Division 3 athletes between the ages of 18-22 were recruited to have their RMR, body composition, and anthropometrics assessed . 4 athletes were recruited from each of the following teams based on sex and …

Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium

Dietary nitrate (NO3-) supplementation, provided as beetroot juice, improves cardiovascular, cognitive, and contractile function by augmenting nitric oxide (NO) biosynthesis; however, the specific taxa responsible, and whether NO3- ingestion can promote a favorable microbial composition to produce NO is yet to be established. To determine whether acute NO3- supplementation is associated with specific microbial taxa in females, 15 healthy adult females consumed an acute dose of NO3--depleted beetroot juice (PL) and NO3--rich beetroot juice (BR). Bacterial DNA from the buccal cells were isolated for subsequent 16s DNA sequencing for preserved regions in their 16s rRNA gene. Concentrations were assessed with …
