National League for Nursing (2006) identifies mentoring as a primary strategy for promoting faculty development throughout the careers of nursing educators. Mentoring has been defined as “a process of an integrated approach to advising, coaching, and nurturing, focused on creating a viable relationship to enhance individual career/personal/professional growth and development.” (Adams, 1998, as cited in Young & Wright, 2001, p. 203). The NLN (2006) also promotes mentoring for nurse educators to address the nursing shortage. Currently, a nurse educator shortage affects 71.3% of nursing schools (AACN, 2007).
