In the past 50 years, obesity prevalence has risen to epidemic-like levels in the United States with an average of 25% of American children being classified as overweight or obese. Prevalence of obesity is significantly increased in socioeconomically disadvantaged income categories. This paper aims to discuss public health preventions/interventions that address childhood obesity such WIC, a supplemental nutrition program for women, infants, and children. Human trafficking has been present in Bhutan for many years but has continued to increase along Bhutan’s borders. The reason for this increase can be contributed to the rise of vulnerable citizens. In particular, women and children are extremely susceptible to forced labor and sex trafficking. This short essay explores the intersection between the gender binary system that exists in our society and the social institution of motherhood. It offers a short reflection on how an unwarranted, yet internalized sense of binary gender ideals has played out in my life, followed by a brief summary of existing research examining the effects of the binary ideologies and cultural contradictions revolving motherhood. It is the first of a series of portfolio posts which aim to expose the nuances in the lived experience of idealized motherhood.
