USDA Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Influenza A viruses are a diverse group of pathogens that have been responsible for millions of human and avian deaths throughout history. Here, we illustrate the transmission potential of H7N9 influenza A virus between Coturnix quail (Coturnix sp.), domestic ducks (Anas platyrhynchos domesticus), chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus), and house sparrows (Passer domesticus) co-housed in an artificial barnyard setting. In each of four replicates, individuals from a single species were infected with the virus. Quail shed virus orally and were a source of infection for both chickens and ducks. Infected chickens transmitted the virus to quail but not to ducks or …

Antibody Dependent Enhancement Of Infectious Bronchitis Virus In Poultry, Zachary Hamilton, Barry Simpson Dr., Donald L. Reynolds, Dvm, Dr. Apr 2022

Antibody Dependent Enhancement Of Infectious Bronchitis Virus In Poultry, Zachary Hamilton, Barry Simpson Dr., Donald L. Reynolds, Dvm, Dr.

UCARE Research Products

Avian infectious bronchitis (IB) is a coronavirus infection of chickens that causes respiratory disease and reproductive problems in chickens. Currently, there are vaccines that are effective against IB. However, new variants and strains of avian infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) routinely emerge. A vaccine that is not the same strain as the virus is not completely effective in protecting against other variants because the vaccine will not allow the host antibodies to completely neutralize the strain. This is a problem because it makes IB difficult to control and diagnose.

Antibody-dependent enhancement (ADE) is a phenomenon whereby non-neutralizing antibodies, or low levels …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Salmonellosis caused by nontyphoidal Salmonella is the second most common zoonotic infection worldwide. The major foodborne route of this infection is the consumption of contaminated poultry meat and egg. Therefore, monitoring and control of Salmonella agents in poultry populations is critical to reduce the risks for public health. In the poultry industry, the most common serotypes in Salmonella infections are Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serotype Enteritidis and Typhimurium. In recent years, other frequently isolated Salmonella serotypes have also increased in Turkey because of the Salmonella control programs regulated by many countries. Hence, other Salmonella serotypes (except for the most frequently …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Aluminosilicates are feed additives used for multiple purposes in the poultry industry. Bentonites, zeolites, and kaolins are types of aluminosilicate compounds that appear in the marketplace due to their capabilities as mycotoxin adsorbents and other qualifications. While there are some differences among their efficacies, anecdotal evidence confirms that these additives ameliorate aflatoxicosis and manure ammonia emission, and improve the durability of pelleted diets. Furthermore, these supplements are safe at 0.2%-1% inclusion levels in the commercial diet of broilers and layers and did not have any adverse effects on productive indices, and even promoted birds' performance. Nevertheless, their upper levels, especially …

Physiological Reactions Of Poultry To Heat Stress And Methods To Reduce Its Effects On Poultry Production, Narongsak Chaiyabutr Jun 2004

Physiological Reactions Of Poultry To Heat Stress And Methods To Reduce Its Effects On Poultry Production, Narongsak Chaiyabutr

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Thermal environment is regarded as the prime factor governing the production because, both the feed consumption and heat production are related closely to the thermal environment. Therefore, heat stress is caused by a combination of environmental and animal factors that result in reduced performance as the animal attempts to cool itself. In this review, the physiological reactions of bodily functions during heat exposure in poultry are described. Thermal panting, the marked response of poultry to heat stress, is compensatory behavior to permit a high rate of evaporative cooling from the respiratory tract. Cardiorespiratory responses to thermal stress show different patterns …

Considerable quantities of non-dietary protein are secreted into the digesta of pigs and poultry. This protein is defined as the protein found in the chyme or faeces when a nitrogen-free diet is fed to animals. Endogenous proteins comprise protein, peptides, amino acids and nitrogen-containing substances from saliva, bile, pancreatic, gastric and intestinal secretions; plasma and sloughed epithelial cells. These endogenous proteins are digested and absorbed in a manner similar to those of dietary origin. Conventional approaches to the estimation of obligatory loss have included the measurement of amino acid excretion in fasted animals, in animals fed on protein-free diets, or …
