The Impact Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On Antimicrobial Stewardship Practices And Their Effect On Veterinary Medicine, Erin N. Bradstreet

Honors College

Antimicrobials are essential in the treatment of diseases in both humans and animals, but antimicrobial resistance threatens their efficacy. As more microorganisms become resistant to an ever-growing list of antimicrobials, diseases that used to be simple to treat are becoming increasingly difficult to manage. The major factors contributing to antimicrobial resistance are overuse and misuse of antimicrobials. In order to combat the problem of resistance, antimicrobial stewardship programs that aim to improve antimicrobial prescribing and use practices are becoming increasingly widespread. These programs are quite common in human medicine, but the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted many aspects of life, including antimicrobial …

The aim of the present study was to compare the effectiveness of cefuroxime, herd-specific autovaccine, and cefuroxime/herd-specific autovaccine treatments in eliminating S. aureus from the milk of 45 cows with subclinical mastitis. Prior to this study, cows with S. aureus mastitis were divided into 3 groups of 15 cows each. Group 1 received cefuroxime, group 2 received the autovaccine, and group 3 received cefuroxime and the autovaccine. The antibiotic was infused into the teat canal, whereas the autovaccine was administrated in the upper udder lymph node region. It was revealed that after day 35 of the treatment S. aureus was …

Evaluation Of The Effects Produced By The Addition Of Growth-Promoting Products To Broiler Feed*, Mehmet Armut, Ayhan Fi̇lazi̇

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of feed additives on broiler productivity. Probiotics, oligosaccharides, organic acids, and avilamycin were used either alone or in combination to improve productivity in terms of body weight, feed intake, feed conversion ratio (FCR), and mortality rate. Broiler chicks (n = 900) were randomly divided into 9 groups. Group 1 was separated from the other groups and used as the control group; the chickens in this group were fed corn soybean until the end of the study. The other groups were fed corn soybean and the following food additives: probiotics (Group …

In Vitro Antibiotic Susceptibility Of Aeromonas Hydrophila Isolated From Disease Ornamental Fish, Malinee Jongjareanjai, Nongnut Assawawongkasem, Nantarika Chansue

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Thirty bacterial isolates were derived from ornamental fish patients (n=30) of the Veterinary Medical Aquatic Animal Research Center (VMARC), Faculty of Veterinary Science, Chulalongkorn University. The isolated bacterial strains were identified by using commercial biochemical identification kit (API Kits, bioMerieux® SA France). The antibiotics susceptibility testing was performed by disc diffusion method, using 24 types of antibiotic discs (OXOID, Oxoid Ltd, UK). The result showed that the majority of the isolated bacteria was Aeromonas hydrophila (27/30). In the A. hydrophila susceptibility study, 66.30% of bacteria were antibiotic resistant, 9.35% were intermediately sensitive and 24.35% were sensitive strains against the tested …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Inhibitory effects of some antibiotics on glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase from the erythrocytes of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss Walbaum, 1792) were investigated. For this purpose, initially erythrocyte glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase was purified 1271.19-fold in a yield of 70.40% by using ammonium sulfate precipitation and 2',5'-ADP Sepharose 4B affinity gel. A constant temperature (+4 ºC) was maintained during the purification process. Enzyme activity was determined with the Beutler method by using a spectrophotometer at 340 nm. This method was utilized for all kinetic studies. Thiamphenicol, amikacin, gentamicin, and netilmicin were used as antibiotics. All the antibiotics exhibited inhibitory effects on the enzyme. …
