Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Daily microgrowth was determined in the otoliths of common dentex (Dentex dentex, Linneaus, 1758) larvae reared in 24 h illumination culture conditions. Microgrowth in otoliths was measured from the first mouth-opening stage of larvae on day 3 to the end of the larval stage on day 32. The sagitta and lapillus were present and were equal in size in newly hatched larvae, but the sagitta grew faster than the lapillus during further larval development. The first size increments in otoliths were observed at 4.25-4.99 mm total length of larvae (day 11). Structural development of the rostrum edge occurred on the …

Embryonic Development Of Common Dentex (Dentex Dentex L.) Eggs, Şahi̇n Saka, Kürşat Firat, Deni̇z Çoban Jan 2006

Embryonic Development Of Common Dentex (Dentex Dentex L.) Eggs, Şahi̇n Saka, Kürşat Firat, Deni̇z Çoban

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The embryonic development of common dentex eggs was investigated in detail in aquacultural conditions at constant temperature. The experiments were carried out at 18 ± 0.2 ºC. The average diameters of the eggs and oil globule were 1.032 ± 0.008 mm and 0.233 ± 0.002 mm, respectively. Embryonic development was observed every 15 min until the morula stage and then at hourly intervals. The morula stage, gastrula stage, neurula stage and formation of somite and kupffer’s vesicle were determined 04:15 h, 10:00 h, 17:00 h and 23:00 h after fertilization, respectively. The hatching rates were 82%-86% at 18 ± 0.2 …

Early Life History Of Cultured Common Dentex (Dentex Dentex L. 1758), Kürşat Firat, Şahi̇n Saka, Deni̇z Çoban Jan 2005

Early Life History Of Cultured Common Dentex (Dentex Dentex L. 1758), Kürşat Firat, Şahi̇n Saka, Deni̇z Çoban

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The early life history of common dentex (Dentex dentex L. 1758) was investigated under culture conditions. The percentage of fertilized buoyant eggs was generally high, between 80 and 85%. Egg diameters ranged from 0.938 to 1.089 mm. Larval development, growth, and some morphological changes were described from day 0 to day 32. Larvae were reared intensively in 6 m^3 tank under a constant photoperiod (24 h light), and fed initially on rotifers, followed by Artemia nauplii and Artemia metanauplii. A green water technique was applied using Nannochloropsis sp., Chorella sp., and Isochrysis sp. at a density of 150,000-200,000 cells ml^{-1}. …
