Seroprevalence Of Brucellosis In Human, Sheep, And Cattle Populations In Kırıkkale (Turkey), Teoman Zafer Apan, Murat Yildirim, Ersi̇n İstanbulluoğlu

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The seroprevalence of Brucellosis in human, sheep, and cattle populations was investigated in rural regions of Kırıkkale in Turkey. Serum samples were obtained from 1436 humans, and 3.2% (46) of the population was found to be positive by Rose Bengal Plate test (RBPT) and 3.0% (43) gave positive results with the standard tube agglutination test (STAT). Immunoglobulin class analysis of RBPT-positive sera using the ELISA test gave positive results for 33 people (75%) with Brucella ELISA IgG and for 11 people (25%) with Brucella ELISA IgM. The evaluation of 804 serum samples, which were obtained from 301 cattle and 503 …

Biotyping And Serotyping Of Mannheimia (Pasteurella) Haemolytica Isolated From Lung Samples Of Slaughtered Sheep In The Van Region, Zi̇ya İlhan, İhsan Keleş Jan 2007

Biotyping And Serotyping Of Mannheimia (Pasteurella) Haemolytica Isolated From Lung Samples Of Slaughtered Sheep In The Van Region, Zi̇ya İlhan, İhsan Keleş

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

A total of 584 lung samples of slaughtered sheep having clinical symptoms of pneumonia were investigated microbiologically. Out of the 584 samples, 66 (11.3%) Mannheimia (Pasteurella) haemolytica strains were isolated on the basis of cultural, morphological and biochemical characteristics. Sixty-six isolates of M. haemolytica were biotyped by carbohydrate fermentation tests and serotyped by coagglutination and indirect haemagglutination (IHA) tests. Out of the 66 M. haemolytica strains, 57 (86.3%) were detected as biotype A, and 9 (13.6%) were biotype T. The 66 M. haemolytica isolates were serotyped as follows by coagglutination test: 13 (19.6%) A2, 11 (16.6%) A1, 9 (13.6%) A6, …

Verotoxin Production In Strains Of Escherichia Coli Isolated From Cattle And Sheep, And Their Resistance To Antibiotics, Altan Aksoy, Murat Yildirim, Bi̇rgül Kaçmaz, Teoman Zafer Apan, J. Sedef Göçmen Jan 2007

Verotoxin Production In Strains Of Escherichia Coli Isolated From Cattle And Sheep, And Their Resistance To Antibiotics, Altan Aksoy, Murat Yildirim, Bi̇rgül Kaçmaz, Teoman Zafer Apan, J. Sedef Göçmen

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In this study, 130 Escherichia coli strains isolated from 306 cattle and sheep fecal samples were studied for their resistance to 10 antibiotics, verotoxin production, and hemolyzation. The antibiotic resistance rates of the E. coli strains were as follows: tetracycline, 51.6%; streptomycin, 24.2%; ampicillin, 13.1%; amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, 5.2%; gentamycin, 4.6%; ciprofloxacin, 4.6%; trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, 4.3%; cefotaxime, 0.7%. None of the strains were resistant to cefepime or ceftazidime. Of all the antibiotics tested, only resistance to streptomycin was higher in the strains isolated from cattle than in the sheep strains (P = 0.043). The evaluation of the cattle strains, based on gender …

Determination Of Clostridium Perfringens Toxin-Types In Sheep With Suspected Enterotoxemia In Kars Province, Turkey, Hali̇l İbrahi̇m Gökce, Oktay Genç, Mahmut Sözmen, Gürbüz Gökçe Jan 2007

Determination Of Clostridium Perfringens Toxin-Types In Sheep With Suspected Enterotoxemia In Kars Province, Turkey, Hali̇l İbrahi̇m Gökce, Oktay Genç, Mahmut Sözmen, Gürbüz Gökçe

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The study was designed to determine the types of Clostridium perfringens and their toxins in sheep with suspected enterotoxemia in Kars province. For this purpose, 260 dead sheep with suspected enterotoxemia and 35 clinically healthy sheep (controls) of different ages and breeds were used. Intestinal contents of each sheep were collected and used to determine alpha, beta, and epsilon toxins of C. perfringens using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and the latex agglutination test (LAT). Based on ELISA and LAT, 220 (84.61%) and 152 (58.46%) sheep, respectively, were positive for C. perfringens toxins. In contrast, 40 (15.38%) sheep were toxin-negative based …
