This study explored how healthcare providers engage in advance care planning and end-of-life care conversations. The research explored what shapes their understanding and the extent to which concepts from thanatology they intuitively bring in, explicitly bring in, and maybe fail to recognize. To achieve this, constructivist grounded theory (CGT) methodology guided the design, data collection, analysis, and interpretation of the findings, which allowed for iteration across interviews and analysis with existing theories and data in the literature. The CGT design encouraged further engagement with the literature in an ongoing iterative fashion as well as with the analysis of the data. …

Background: Surgical site infections (SSIs) are the most common cause of a surgical complication and account for 38% of all hospital acquired infections (HAI). The cost of caring for SSIs in the United States can range from $3.5-$10 billion annually.

Purpose: The purpose of this DNP Quality Improvement (QI) initiative was to improve preoperative staff’s knowledge and application of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved 3-minute application scrub time for the 2% CHG cloths and reduce SSIs for an acute care hospital located in Louisville, Kentucky.

Delirium in intensive care unit (ICU) patients can lead to increased length of stay in the hospital, increased risk of complications, increased polypharmacy, family distress and increased rate of mortality (Vasilevskis et al., 2018). Research has shown that addressing modifiable risk factors can improve survival rate by up to 15%, and routine screening for delirium in ICU patients leads to decreased patient anxiety, reduced in-hospital mortality, early recognition, and treatment of delirium (Krewulak et al., 2021 ; Vasilevskis et al., 2018). Kidney transplantation is preferred for patients with end-stage renal disease. The current gold standard for preserving kidneys is static cold storage (SCS) at 4°C in University of Wisconsin (UW) solution. However, SCS contributes to ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI), which involves cell death and inflammation. Our group showed that SCS of kidneys with hydrogen sulfide donors, like sodium thiosulfate (STS), that reduce tissue injury enhanced kidney survival. Though, there is still a risk of cold renal IRI at 4°C. Recent evidence suggests that preserving organs at 10°C enhanced graft function and survival. Tendon and ligament injuries are debilitating conditions across species. Poor regenerative capacities of these tissues limit restoration of original functions. The first study evaluated the effect of cellular administration on tendon/ligament injuries in horses using meta-analysis. The cellular administration was effective in restoring ultrasonographic echogenicity and increasing vascularity during early phase of healing. Additionally, it improved microstructural organization of healed tissue in terms of cellularity and fiber alignment. However, the study did not support its use for increasing rate of return to performance, expression/deposition of tendon-specific genes/proteins, or mechanical properties.
